Crawford

Emily Crawford

Emily Shields Crawford, 74, of Cullowhee, died Thursday, Nov. 1, at Harris Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at Cullowhee Baptist Church. The Rev. Joe Yelton officiated. Burial was at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native of Blount County, Tenn., she was a life-long resident of Jackson County. She was a graduate of Western Carolina Teachers College and taught elementary education for 30 years in Canada and Scotts Creek. She was a member of Cullowhee Baptist Church and Eastern Star. She was a daughter of the late Jack and Jesse Williams Shields.

Surviving are her husband, William Robert Crawford Sr. of Cullowhee; one daughter, Janis Crawford Extine of Cullowhee; one son, William Robert Crawford Jr. of Bedford, Texas; two sisters, Jackie Horton of Evans, Ga., and Nora Lee Hoyle of Apache Junction, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Winford Hughes

Winford Stone Hughes, 89, of Whittier, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Autumn Care in Waynesville, where he had been a resident for a number of years.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at Shoal Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Steve Jamison officiated. Burial was at Thomas Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers were members of the Swain County Civitan Club.

He was a retired insurance agent, a member of the Shoal Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a teacher and deacon, and active in community affairs. He was the son of the late Cam W. and Mary Lou Howell Hughes.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Neil Hughes.

Surviving are another son, Ralph Lane Hughes of Plano, Texas; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Shellie Hutchison

Shellie Ann Hutchison, 62, of Brevard, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Chirsty officiated. Burial was at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native of Transylvania County, she was a daughter of Edith Picklesimer Passmore of Winston-Salem and the late John Christopher Passmore.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, William T. Hutchison; two daughters, Kelly Beeson of Kernersville and Teresa Doda of Glenville; one sister, Margaret Glance of Winston-Salem; and one granddaughter.



Dois Prewitt

Dois Everett Prewitt, 84, of Cherokee, formerly of Cleveland, Miss., died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, in Sylva.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at Ray Funeral Home. The Rev. Carl Prewitt officiated. Burial was in New Cleveland Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lewis Braswell, Jeffrey Shivers, Bern Prewitt Sr., Bern Prewitt Jr., Sean Doherty and Chuck Hudson.

Born Nov. 28, 1916, to Cleve and Pearl Moore Prewitt, he was a native of Mississippi and lived in and around Cleveland, where he had a farming interest. He worked part time for the ASC office for 22 years. He was a 7th division scout and served on Attu Island during the war. He was a deacon in the Cleveland Church of Christ, until he moved to the Great Smoky Mountains in 1970 to build a campground near Cherokee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Monroe Prewitt; and two sisters, Bea Prewitt and Nell Malone.

Surviving are his wife, Ree Clanton Prewitt; two daughters, Deborah P. Braswell and Felecia Prewitt; four brothers, Elmer Prewitt of Boyle, Grady Prewitt and A.C. Prewitt, both of Merigold, Miss., and Roy Prewitt of Bardstown, Ky.; two sisters, Alice Prewitt and Frances Shivers of Merigold, Miss.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.



Lonnie Dills

Lonnie Marion Dills, 88, of Cullowhee, died Thursday, Nov. 1, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Black Mountain Baptist Church. The Revs. Roger Stewman, Wesley Hooper and Eddie StilIwell officiated. Burial was at Pine Ridge Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Dean officiated graveside services, along with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 104. Pallbearers were Jim Ed Powell, Larry Bryson, Larry Watson, Cecil Dills, Keith Dills, Mickey Dills, Locke Bishop, Frank Dills and Billy Dills.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Burma and China with the 475th Infantry Merrills Marauders. He was chairman of the board of deacons for Black Mountain Baptist Church, member of the choir, and retired from Western Carolina University maintenance department as a rock mason. He was the son of the late John and Iva Bryson Dills.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Minnie Bryson Dills.

Surviving are two sisters, Pearl Buchanan of Huntersville and Selma Reese of Sylva; three sons, Lebern Dills, Kenneth Dills and Leonard Dills, all of Cullowhee; five daughters, Mary Sue Stephens of Sylva, Betty Littrell, Johnnie Nell Bishop and Ruth Thompson, all of Cullowhee, and Martha Fox of Franklin; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Willis Sutton

Willis L. Sutton, 83, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, in Stockton, Calif., where he made his home since 1946.

He was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Jackson County to the late Coleman and Dorothy Parker Sutton. A veteran of World War II, he had lived in Hoquiam, Wash., before moving to California.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Andy and Denver; and one sister, Elba Crisp.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Coey Sutton; one son, Richard of Medisto, Calif.; four daughters, Linda Enas of Boulder, Colo., Shirley Demet of Oregon, and Carolyn and Ellen Sutton, both of Stockton, Calif.; one sister, Lillian Reynolds of Whittier; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.



Geraldine Hicks

Geraldine Messer Hicks, 59, of Cole Mountain Circle, Highlands, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at her residence after a long illness.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at Buck Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, she lived in Highlands for the past 39 years. She was daughter of the late Lewis and Marie Chastine Messer.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Eddie Messer; and one sister, Louise Messer.

Surviving are her husband of 39 years, Bill Hicks; one son, Rogers Hicks of the home; one daughter, Beverly Kemnitzer of Greer, S.C.; three brothers, Bill Messer, Benny Messer and Wade Messer, all of Tuckasegee; three sisters, Freda Leopard and Judy Sims, both of Tuckasegee, and Linda Smith of Brevard; and two grandsons.

Bryant Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Joan Steed

Joan Trull Steed, 57, of Cashiers, died Oct. 31, 2001.

A memorial service will be held at Cashiers Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10. The Revs. Art Fowler and Johnny Norris will officiate. She was buried at Jackson Memorial Park on Nov. 2.

A native of Jackson County, she was the wife of James C. Steed.

Pearlie Williams

Pearlie Williams, 76, of Bridle Path, Andrews, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, in District Memorial Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Second Baptist Church, Andrews. The Revs. Lewis Welch and Delmar Holder officiated. Burial was in Valleytown Cemetery with military rites conducted by Andrews VFW Post 7620.

A native of Graham County, he had lived in Andrews for the past 33 years. He retired from Bakeršs Furniture with 19 years. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a son of the late Joel and Easter Orr Williams.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Dave Willliams.

Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Hazel Mauck Williams; two daughters, Valerie Holder of Robbinsville and Connie Whitaker of Andrews; two sisters, Iva Lee Hollifield of Robbinsville and Addie Gladden of Maryville, Tenn.; one brother, Coy Williams of Robbinsville; and three grandchildren.
