Calpini Calpini

Catherine Calpini

Catherine Martin Calpini, 79, of 495 Savannah Drive, Sylva, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, in Harris Regional Hospital after an extended illness.

A memorial service and celebration of life were held Tuesday, Nov. 5, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Ron Allen officiated. A family ceremony was held at Mt. Mitchell Wednesday, Nov. 6.

A native of Miami, Fla., she retired to Statesville before moving to Sylva to be near family. Daughter of the late Albert and Elizabeth Eileen Sikes Martin, she was employed by the Miami Postal Credit Union and was a member of Fifth Creek Presbyterian Church in Statesville.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Artemio "Art" Calpini; one son, John Robert Calpini of Tallahassee, Fla.; two daughters, Linda Calpini and Eileen Calvert, both of Sylva; and four grandchildren.

Bert Oastler

Bert R. Oastler of Glenville died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.

Memorial Services will be held today at 2 p.m. ( Thursday) at Grace Christian Church in Cashiers. Pastor Thomas Graham will officiate.

A former resident of Atlanta and of Amelia Island, Fla., he received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Duke University in 1956 and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

After serving three years in the Air Force, he returned to his hometown of Atlanta and began work as an estimator, project manager and vice president of Tri-State Construction Co.

After five years of construction experience, he enrolled in Emory University Law School and graduated with a doctor of laws in 1966. He was honored with selection to the Bryan Society, was associate editor of the Journal of Public Law, and graduated fourth in his law school class.

Upon graduation, he joined the firm of Smith, Currie & Hancock and specialized in construction litigation and arbitration. He tried cases in 32 states, as well as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. During his 32 years as a construction trial lawyer, he represented prime contractors in heavy construction and highway contracts, property owners, subcontractors, material suppliers, architects and engineers in his representation of clients. He achieved many multi-million dollar jury verdicts and arbitration awards. He also lectured extensively on construction law at Georgia Tech, Emory Law School and wrote articles for several trade organizations.

He was a member of Cherokee Country Club, Amelia Island Plantation Club, and Trillium Links and Lake Club. He was a former member of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta and Plantation Chapel at Amelia Island.

He was active in the Boys Scouts of America as a member of a troop in the North Fulton District, where achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, was a member of the Board of Review, the Eagle Scout Board of Review, and the Court of Honor. He was also a member of the Buckhead Civitan Club and the Buckhead 50 Club.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Carmen Oastler Allison.

Surviving are his wife, Alexandra "Zannie" Dowling Oastler; two daughters, Elizabeth Jackson of St. Simons, Ga., and Elaine Blackmon of Atlanta; one son Thomas W. Oastler of Atlanta; one stepdaughter, Lolly Cowart of Savannah, Ga.; stepmother, Elizabeth Oastler of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; and several nieces, including Janet Allison of Highlands and Suzanne Allison of Sylva and nephew Daniel M. Allison of Sylva.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Christian Church, P.O. Box 1574, Cashiers, N.C. 28717; or to one's charity of choice.

Charlie Henry

Charlie W. Henry, 79, of Dark Ridge Road, Sylva, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Earl Holden and J.D. Grant officiated. Burial was in Middleton Cemetery with military rites conducted by Sylva American Legion Post 104. Pallbearers were Clay Cogdill, James Luker, Harold, Steve, John and Benny Henry.

A native of Raven Ford, he had lived in Jackson County most of his life. He retired from Dayco Southern with 36 years of service as a boiler operator. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a son of the late Wesley and Ola Ashe Henry.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Judy Lane Henry; and two brothers, Jeter and Vonell Henry.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lois Fisher Henry; one daughter, Linda Osgood of Maggie Valley; four sons, Tom Henry of Waynesville, Harold Henry and John Henry, both of Sylva, and Steve Henry of Balsam; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Helen Smith

Helen C. Smith, 71, of North Country Club Drive, Cullowhee, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Solace Nursing Center in Asheville after a period of declining health.

A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Jeffrey and Tonya Vickery officiated.

A native of Jackson County, where she lived most of her life, she retired from Western Carolina University as secretary in the education department. She also worked several years at Camp Lab School as secretary and was the co-owner of Jimmy's Mini Market for the last 22 years.

She was a member of Cullowhee Baptist Church and an auxiliary member of Mike Martin VFW Tuckasegee Post 09493. She was a daughter of the late Alvin and Olive Stewart Crawford.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Francis Deitz and Betty Joe Moses.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Jimmy A. Smith; one son, Gary Smith of Cullowhee; two sisters, Bonnie Hooper of Cullowhee and Billie Jones of Dillsboro; one brother, Ted Crawford of Sylva; and one granddaughter.

Juanita Smith

Juanita Wilson Smith, 93, of Tallahassee, Fla., died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, in Tandem Nursing Home after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, at Speedwell Baptist Church. The Rev. Loy Kennedy officiated. Pallbearers were Carl Shelton, Scotty Smith, Fred Harris, Ron Brown, Tim and Troy Ferrell. Burial was in Cullowhee's Robert Rogers Cemetery.

A native of Cullowhee's Speedwell community, she received her bachelor of science degree and master's degree from Western Carolina University and was a retired teacher with the Jackson County school system. She was a member of East LaPorte Chapter 206, Order of the Eastern Star, Marion Dragoons Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy of Weirsdale, Fla., and Alpha Delta Kappa in Leesburg, Fla.

She was the daughter of the late Sherlie and Mae Jamison Wilson and wife of the late John Wood Smith, who died in 1983. She was a member of Speedwell Baptist Church until moving to Weirsdale in 1977. She was a member of Crossway Baptist Church in Tallahassee.

Surviving are one son, Harold Dean Smith of Cullowhee; two daughters, Ola Belle York of Lady Lake, Fla., and Shirley Anne Daniel of Tallahassee, Fla.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Fannie Manning

Fannie Roberta Manning, 77, of Dillsboro, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, in a Sylva care center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Carnes officiated. Burial was in Robinson Family Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, she was a resident of Wilmington for 40 years and had been a resident of Dillsboro since 1980. She was the daughter of the late Russell and Hester Stiles Robinson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Cleveland Manning Sr.; and one daughter, Dinah June Manning.

Surviving are one son, Carl Manning Jr. of Roseboro; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Carl Potts

Carl G. Potts, 77, of Norton Road, Cashiers, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Highlands Cashiers Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday. Nov. 2, at Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. The Rev. Ricky Potts and Chris Norris officiated. Burial was in Evitt Cemetery. Pallbearers were Smokey Buchanan, Edward Lee Buchanan, Blaine Hawkins, Joe Harrold, Troy Rice and Frank Henson Jr.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired carpenter with Tobe Clark Construction Co., a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and member of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon. He was a son of the late Ernest and Hazel Fox Potts.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Zachary Potts; one daughter, Sharon Rice of Pisgah Forest; one son, Terry Carl Potts of Franklin; three sisters, Bobbie Coward of Norton, Gertrude Hooper of Cullowhee and Juanita Dilbeck of Titusville, Fla.; one brother, Eldon Potts of Franklin; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Sharon Fox

Sharon Dawn Fox, 27, of Cullowhee's Pressley Creek community, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, in a hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in April.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Speedwell Baptist Church. The Revs. Roger Stewman, David Burch and Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in Hooper Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a caregiver with Community Care and was a member of Speedwell Baptist Church.

Surviving are her parents, Talmadge Fox of Cullowhee and Sandra Tallent Fox of Trenton, Ga.; one daughter, Cassandra Fox of the home; one son, Colby Fox of Waynesville; three sisters, Karen Baggett of Burlington, and Michelle Fox and Amy Fox, both of Cullowhee; one grandmother, Onabee Fox of Cullowhee; and one grandfather, Claude Tallent of Sylva.

Pearl McCall

Pearlene Hoxit McCall, 70, of Tuckasegee, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Mission-St. Joseph's Heath System in Asheville after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at Pinhook Valley Baptist Church. The Revs. Wayne Hoxit, Newal Hoxit, Bill Lance and Tommy Owen officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Daughter of Ollie Galloway Hoxit of Pickens, S.C., and the late Rev. Vessie Hoxit, she was a song writer.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Roland McCall; two sons, O'Neal McCall of Tuckasegee and Arnold McCall of Rosman; five daughters, Lowee Edney of Hendersonville, Shirley Rhodarmer of Waynesville, Maybelle Edwards of Etowah, Judy Anders of Balsam Grove and Vickie Owensby of Tuckasegee; three brothers, Wayne Hoxit and Palmer Hoxit, both of Pickens, and Newall Hoxit of Six Mile, S.C.; four sisters, Virginia Bates and Clealon Barrett, Hazel McGaha, all of Pickens, and Faye Castle of Easley; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Douglas Eye

Douglas M. Eye of Cullowhee, 72, a retired colonel in the U.S. Army, former executive officer to the assistant secretary of the Army, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Mission-St. Joseph's Health System in Asheville.

A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Burial with full military honors will be held Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

A resident of Cullowhee, Eye served in Germany, Korea and Vietnam. He served on the staff of the commander-in-chief of the Pacific from 1965-68, as battalion commander of the 1/44th Artillery in Vietnam from 1968-69 and commanded the 19th Artillery Group at Fort MacArthur, Calif., from 1973-74.

After serving as executive officer to the assistant secretary of the Army at the Pentagon from 1975-1979, he retired in 1980. His decorations include four Legion of Merit awards and two Bronze Stars.

He was inducted into the Northern State University (South Dakota) Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987, the Artillery OCS Hall of Fame in 2002 and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

A native of Kidder, S.D., he was a son of Charles and Winifred Chapin Eye. He was a graduate of Kidder High School and Northern State University. He graduated from Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., in 1965 and from Army War College in Carlisle, Pa., in 1973.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Winona Cotter Eye; one brother, Forrest Eye of Britton, S.D.; one sister, Leone Hagen Reeder of North Dakota; four daughters, Katheleen Boland of Minneapolis, Claire Eye of Cullowhee, Rebecca Hadeed of Sterling, Va., and Sara Eye of Blacksburg, Va.; two sons, Douglas Eye of Sterling, Va., and Charles Eye of Herndon, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Bertha Bivens

Bertha Mary Moses Bivens, 85, of Riverhill Drive, Morganton, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at Hospice of Burke County Shytle House in Valdese.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at First Baptist Church of Glen Alpine. The Revs. Michael Brown and Oliver Price will officiate. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends today (Thursday) from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.

Born Aug. 18, 1917, in Macon County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Jane Buchanan Moses. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Glen Apline, where she taught Sunday school. She was a retired employee of the N.C. School for the Deaf.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Eva Moses Stewart, Daisy Moses Hopkins and Emma Moses Snipes; and two brothers, John Moses and Burgin Moses.

Surviving are her husband, Otis Auburn Bivens; one son, Kenneth Bivens of Nebo; one daughter, Barbara Cartwright of Morganton; one sister, Jessie Moses Ashe of Suffolk, Va.; one brother, Bert Moses of Sylva; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Jeanne Miville

Jeanne Pinette Miville, 92, of Waynesville, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at Brian Nursing Center in Waynesville.

A memorial service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, East Hartford, Conn., Saturday, Nov. 23. Burial will be at Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River., Mass. A native of Fort Kent, Maine, she was one of 11 children raised on a potato farm. She was of Catholic faith and lived most of her life in Fall River, Mass., working as a dressmaker and seamstress. Daughter of the late Levite and Margaret Corbin Pinette, she had lived in Jackson and Haywood counties for the past 6 1/2 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, who died in 1947.

Surviving are two sons, Norm Miville of Balsam and Charles Miville of Sarasota, Fla.; five brothers and sisters, Azilda, Rita, Sylvio and Rey, all of Connecticut, and Bernice of Florida; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.

Paul Bradley

Paul "Bud" Bradley, 61, of Metropolis, Ill., formerly of Jackson County's Wilmot community, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at Massac Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at IOOF Cemetery. The Rev. Jack Russell will officiate.

He was of the Baptist faith and served in the U.S. Navy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carey and Mamie Bradley; one sister, Dorothy Verbarg; and three brothers, Watzell, Kenneth and Bobby Bradley.

Surviving are four sisters, Virginia Neely of Brookport, Ill., Frances Buchanan of Sylva, Lucy Settlemyre of Maryville, Tenn., and Joan Nations of Wilmot; and two brothers, C.L. Bradley of Wilmot and Jimmy Bradley of Cullowhee.

James Sutton

James R. Sutton, 69, of 2577 Neely Store Road, Rock Hill, S.C., died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at Garden Sanctuary Church of God. The Revs. Mike Wooten and Ray McCall officiated. Burial was at Grandview Memorial Park, Cherry Road.

A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Elsie G. Sutton and Maude Buchanan Sutton. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was a retired carpenter with Cornwell Construction Co.

Surviving are his wife, Moqueta Coggins Sutton; one son, Keith R. Sutton of Rock Hill; one daughter, Jannessa Sutton LaBoon of Rock Hill; one brother, Candler Sutton of Mebane; three sisters, Opal Dillard of Mebane, Ann Blackwell of Burlington and Mary Buchanan of Sylva; and three grandchildren.

Joan Zimberg

Joan Davis Zimberg of Tacoma, Wash., died Oct. 21, 2002, after a lengthy illness.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, Nov. 6, in Seattle, Wash. Burial was in Mt. Thoma, Washington National Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late John Douglas Davis and Minnie Painter Davis.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine Fullbright; and one brother, John D. Davis.

Surviving are her husband, Sherwin of Tacoma, Wash.; one son, Todd Allen Zimberg of Vashon, Wash.; three sisters, Ruth McCoy of Sedro Woolley, Wash., Opal Holden of Greenwood, S.C., Nancy Ennis of Richmond, Va.; and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.



Carroll Cox

Carroll R. Cox, 75, of Camden, S.C., died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, at First Baptist Church of Camden. The Revs. Bruce Hanncock and Bill Howard officiated. Burial followed in Quaker Cemetery.

A native of Camden, he was a son of the late James Coker and Ordette Hyman Cox. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Camden and Jerry Tom's Sunday school class. He graduated from Camden High School, where he played football and was elected captain of the South Carolina Shrine Bowl Team.

He entered Clemson University in 1945, played football there in 1945 and 1946, entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1947 and returned to Clemson, where he played on both the 1948 undefeated Gator Bowl team and the 1949 team.

After coaching football at Camden High School and Denmark High School, he worked as a regional sales manager for Universal Atlas Cement and then Titleist Golf Ball Co. from 1969 until he retired in 1995. He was named Salesman of the Year in 1985.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Sheffield Cox; one brother, Hugh "Shot" Cox; one sister, Margaret Cox Rabon; and stepmother, Willie Tiller Cox.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Alice Floyd Cox; two sons, James A. Cox of Greenville. S.C., and Steven Carol Cox of Sylva; two stepdaughters, Christy Brazell Lineback of Conway, S.C., and Sophia Brazell Floyd of Columbia, S.C.; two brothers, Dickie Cox of Camden and Jimmy Cox of Plantation, Fla.; two stepbrothers, Dick Tiller and William Tiller; and nine grandchildren.

Susie Raby of Cherokee died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002.

Wallace Watts

Wallace E. Watts, 55, of Highway 246 North, Hodges, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at Harley Funeral Home. The Revs. Roger McCullough and George Hill officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Greg Simons, Rusty Harvley, Ronnie Richardson, Mike Watts, Steve Watts and Joey Bobo.

A native of Franklin, he was a son of the late Glen Watts and Alice B. Jones Watts. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sisters, Mary Richardson of Greenwood and Edith C. Watts Bobo of the home; and two brothers, Terrell Watts of Ware Shoals and Otis Watts of Sylva.

Margo Worley

Margo Johnson Worley, 65, of 2411 New Orleans Street, Greensboro, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Moses Cone Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at Temple Memorial Baptist Church, High Point. Dr. Haywood Gray officiated. Burial was at Lakeview Memorial Park.

A native of Detroit and former resident of Jackson County, she had been a resident of Greensboro for the past 35 years. She was retired from United Child Development Services after 33 years as a family advocate for children and families.

She was a member of Temple Memorial Baptist Church, where she participated in the the senior usher board and the prayer committee. She was a member of the Booklovers Club of Greensboro.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim D. Worley.

Surviving are three daughters, Renee Thompson of Spring, Texas, RoseMary Turner of High Point and Rita Worley of Greensboro; one son, James Douglas Worley of Greensboro; one stepson, Tommy Bryson of Sylva; one brother, Bertrum Johnson of Georgia; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Helen Thompson

Helen Gass Thompson, 82, of Cope Creek Road, Sylva, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, in Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at Scotts Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Rich Peoples will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

A native of Swain County, she had lived most of her life in Jackson County. She was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member of WMU and a nursery worker. She was a daughter of the late William Taylor and Hazel Wells Gass.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters and one granddaughter.

Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Frank Thompson; four sons, James Robert Thompson of Drexel, Joseph Paul Thompson of Statesville, Hugh Phillip Thompson of Tuckasegee and John David Thompson of Mooresville; one brother, the Rev. Harvey Gass of Whittier; two sisters, Mildred Sellers of Weaverville and Iva Lee Gouge of Eugene, Ore.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
