The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Sim McCord

Sim Hillard McCord, 86, of Augusta, Ga., died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Martinez Baptist Church in Martinez, Ga. Burial was in Westover Memorial Park in Augusta. Honorary pallbearers were Pat M. O'Connor, Winton Smith, Harry Morris, William Lewis and Charlie Wildes.

A civil service retiree, he lived in Augusta but maintained a second home in Sylva. He and his wife were active in Scotts Creek Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Madelyn Woodward McCord.
Surviving are one son, Dr. Symm Hawes McCord of Evans, Ga.; two sisters, Daisy McCord MacDonald and Blanche McCord Martin, both of Augusta; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren,

Pearle Brown

Pearle A. Brown, 74, of Franklin, died Wednesday, October 29, 2003, in Angel Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home. The Rev. Harold Ball officiated. Burial was in the Old Field Cemetery, Sylva. Pallbearers were Boyd Ensley, Bailey Ensley, Curtis Ensley, Kirby Ensley, Todd Hall and Alan Ashe.

A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Hershel Ashe and Ollie Cope Ashe. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Franklin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Lee Ensley, who died in 1987, and two sisters, Mary Frances Ashe and Elaine Ashe.

Surviving are her husband of 13 years, Howard R. Brown; one daughter, Tammy Zilbauer of Franklin; one son, Steve Ensley of Murphy; two sisters, Sandy Rielly of Clearwater, Fla., and Glenda Henson of Gastonia; two brothers, Ken Ashe of Waynesville and Wilburn Ashe of Gilbrata, Mich.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Clifford Parker

Raymond Clifford Parker, 50, of Sylva, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Tommy Ashe and Larry Perry officiated. Burial was in Lovedale Cemetery with military rites conducted by the U.S. Marines and Sylva American Legion Post 104. Pallbearers were Olin Orr, Corey Rogers, Johnny Mathis, Bart Simons, Steve Beasley, Jimmy Houston and Hoss Crisp. Honorary pallbearers were employees of Parker & Associates.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was owner of Parker & Associates Inc., a national Painting and Decorating Contractors of America board member and past PDCA president. He was a 1971 graduate of Sylva-Webster High School, where he was on the football and wrestling teams. He was a U.S. Marine veteran and a member of Rockdale Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by one infant brother and two infant sisters.

Surviving are his parents, Bill and Ruby Cochran Parker; one sister, Darlene Cagle of Sylva; one son, Mitchum Turpin of Butner; one daughter, Tasheena Parker of Cherokee; and grandmother, Frances Parker of Sylva.

Thomas Barker

Thomas D. Barker, 59, of Winterhaven Drive, Sylva, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Clifford Parker and David Souderes officiated. Burial was in Old Savannah Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired manager of the Dillsboro Super Test. He was a son of Virginia Hannon Barker of Sylva and the late John Otis Barker.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Doyle Barker.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one daughter, Kimberly Owen of Rosman; one sister, Clara Belle Martin of Pacolet, S.C.; and three brothers, Freeman Barker of Waynesville, Marcus Barker of Sylva and Donald Barker of Pacolet.

Howard Blackburn

Howard E. Blackburn, 89, of North Norton Road, Cashiers, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. The Revs. Keith Ashe and Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in Stewart Cemetery with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army. Pallbearers were Tim Ledford, Layton Moss, Randal Cobb, Edward Blackburn, Jeffery Stewart and Jeremy Stewart.

A native of Macon County, he was a son of the late John Parker and Columbia Arizona Parker Blackburn. He attended Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. He retired from N.C. Department of Transportation in the maintenance department.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, seeing action in Guadalcanal, New Georgia, New Guinea, Luzon and the Philippines. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and combat infantry badge.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and six sisters.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Lola Hooper Black–burn; two daughters, Debra and Janet Blackburn, both of Cashiers; and two sisters, Ida Mae Norris and Bertha Moss.

James Smart

James Robert Smart, 84, of Cherokee, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

A memorial service and burial will be held in St. Petersburg, Fla.

A native of Laurel, Mont., he was a resident of Cherokee since 1966. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and was retired from the St. Petersburg, Fla., police department. He was a son of the late Charles Henry and Bessie Barnett Smart.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Charles Smart, and three sisters, Rachel Stephenson, Alice Smart and Dorothy Lawrence.

Surviving are his wife, Paulette Smart of the home; one son, James Richard Smart of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one daughter, Dianne Panther of Cherokee; one brother, Charles Smart; three sisters, Esther Van Dyke, Hazel Boyd and Mary Moore, all of Florida; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Dr. Hilton Seals

Dr. D. Hilton Seals, 79, of Whittier, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at First Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Bill Serjak, Davis Whitesides and Riley Covin will officiate. The family will receive friends at the fellowship hall immediately following the service.

A native of Hoke County, he lived in Jackson County most of his life. He was graduated from Pfeiffer College in 1943, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1945, from Duke Divinity School in 1948 and from UNC Medical School in 1951.

He served his internship at Temple University Hospital and at U.S. Navy hospitals in Oaknoll, Calif., and Corona, Calif., and was in private practice from 1956 to 1977 in Sylva.

He was a member of the North Carolina and American Diabetes associations and the North Carolina and American thoracic societies. He received the William D. MacNider Award in 1951 at the UNC Medical School and the Founder's Award of North Carolina.

He was former president of N.C. Tuberculosis Association, chairman of the Jackson-Macon-Swain counties health departments and consultant to Highland-Cashiers Hospital board of trustees. He served on the Jackson County United Christians Ministry board and with the Harris Regional Hospital Chaplaincy program. Son of the late Luther Bifford and Frettie Myrtle Sessoms Seals, he practiced internal medicine and cardiology at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Asheville from 1977 until his retirement in 1988.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Floyd McLean Seals, Luther Bifford Seals Jr., Jimmy Douglas Seals and William Lester Seals.

Surviving are his wife, Theresa Martin Seals of the home; two sons, Thomas Douglas Seals of Asheville and John Roger Seals of Evans, Ga.; one sister, Lois Seals Collins of Aberdeen; one stepson, James B. Sutton of Whittier; one stepdaughter, Nora E. Myers of Whittier; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

William Shaver

William D. Shaver, 77, of 55 Echota Church Road, Cherokee, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, in a Cherokee nursing home.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Tennessee.

A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., he was the son of the late Fred and Marietta Shaver.

Surviving are one son, Harold Frasher of Cherokee; and four grandchildren.

Clyde Andrews

Clyde Lawrence Andrews, 79, of Cullowhee, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

A native of Nemaha, Neb., he served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He owned and operated Andrews Real Estate for 37 years, working in commercial and residential real estate. Son of the late Fred and Effie Stout Andrews, he was a member of Cullowhee Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Dillard Andrews of the home; two daughters, Denissa Schulman of Skyland and Deborah Nielsen of Woodstock, Ga.; one sister, Zada Pilster of Tucson, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

Dakota Gunter

Dakota Gene Gunter, infant son of Billy Ray and Tina Cabe Gunter of Whittier, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Hyatt's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Oliver Dills officiated.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandmother, Linda Taylor Gunter.

Surviving, in addition to the parents, are two sisters, Brittany and Kayla Gunter of the home; maternal grandparents, Larry Cabe of Sylva and Diane Ingram of Whittier; maternal great-grandparents, A.G. and Ellen Sutton of Sylva; paternal grandparents, Gary and Delores Gunter of Whittier; and paternal great-grandfather, Gentry Gunter of Whittier.
