Michael Holden

Michael Anthony Holden, 35, of Ridgeway Street, Sylva, formerly of Cullowhee's Speedwell community, died Sunday, Oct. 29, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Earl Holden officiated. Burial was in Hooper Cemetery of the Speedwell community.

A native of Savannah, Ga., he had lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a 1982 graduate of Cullowhee High School, Southwestern Community College and Western Carolina University. He was a hair designer with Sheer Images of Sylva and was a member of Speedwell Baptist Church.

He was the son of Mary Nell Stephens Brooks of Whittier and the late Max Holden, who died in 1985.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one sister, Debbie Condon of Buford, Ga.; one stepsister, Brenda Mathis of Tuckasegee; and one brother, Steve Holden of Minot, N.D.

Memorials may be made to Hooper Cemetery Fund.


Rhea Lowery

Rhea Lowery, 76, of Ocala, Fla., died Wednesday, Oct. 11, in an Ocala, Fla., hospital.

She was a summer resident of Tatham's Mountain Retirement Park in Sylva's Savannah community. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Ocala, Fla., and attended the Adventist Church in Jackson County.

She was preceded in death by one son, Leland Tatum.

Surviving are her husband, Louis C. Lowery of Ocala, Fla.; one stepson, Louis L. Lowery of Belle Glade, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Wanda Coiffi of West Palm Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.



Frances Adams

Frances Smith Adams, 84, of 8816 Highway 81 South Starr, S.C., died Monday, Oct. 30, at Anderson Area Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Good Hope Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Richard Roberts will officiate. Burial will be in Iva City Cemetery in Iva, S.C.

A native of Cullowhee, she was the daughter of the late William Henry and Ola Shelton Smith. A homemaker, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was preceded in death by one son, Arthur Allen Adams.

Surviving are two sons, Aaron Ansel Adams and Ronald Adams, both of Starr, S.C.; two daughters, Gail Shaw of Greenville, S.C., and Sherron Metz of Starr, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

McDougald Funeral Home in Anderson, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.



Rufus Hagwood

Rufus "Pitt" Pittman Hagwood, 80, of Edward Fowler Road, Sylva, died Sunday, Oct. 29, at his residence.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at Cashiers United Methodist Church. The Revs. David Beam and Tommy Madden will officiate. The family will receive friends in the commons area of Cashiers United Methodist Church prior to the service between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

A native of Wake Crossroads community in Raleigh, he was a Cashiers resident since 1975. He was a graduate of Rolesville High School and attended Mars Hill College. He was a retired real estate salesman with McDevitt Real Estate in Cashiers. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army infantry division.

He was a Mason, a member of the Wake Crossroads Baptist Church and associate member of Cashiers United Methodist Church. He was the son of the late Cornelius Edward Hagwood and Lula B. Watson Hagwood.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, four sisters and one granddaughter.

Surviving are his wife, Anne Melton Jones-Hagwood; three daughters, Terri Shular of Brevard, Karen Hagwood Henson and Lisa Gavin, both of Sunset Beach; one sister, Bessie Mitchell of Naples, Fla; seven grandchildren; and two step grandchildren.

Alliefair Haskett

Alliefair C. Haskett, 98, of 36 Slo Gait Lane, Sylva, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at Lovedale Baptist Church. The Revs. J.D. Grant and Cecil Frady officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

A native of Macon County, she lived most of her life in Jackson County. At her death, she was the oldest member of Lovedale Baptist Church, having joined in 1943. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Newton Crawford and Nancy Jane Webb Crawford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Haskett; five brothers; and one sister.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, R.L. and Lona Haskett of Webster; daughters, Freda Queen and Hazel Monteith, both of Sylva, and daughters and sons-in-law, Othello and Frank Crawford of Sylva and Gail and Richard Smith of Hendersonville; and one sister, Cordelia Cabe of Scaly Mountain. She was affectionately known as "Nanny" to 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to her immediate family, Aunt Alliefair influenced her many nieces and nephews with her faith, vibrant spirit and positive outlook on life.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Greene

Robert "Dick" Greene, 89, of Sylva's Dillardtown community, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, at his daughter's residence in Cary.

Funeral service were held at noon Friday, Oct. 27, at Sylva First Baptist Church. The Revs. Ed Beddingfield and Loyd Ginn officiated. Burial was in Keener Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired machinist with Mead Corp., with more than 35 years of service. He was a member of Sylva First Baptist Church, where he had been a choir member since 1937, Sylva Volunteer Fire Department for 30-plus years, Sylva Lions Club and Sylva Masonic Lodge. He was the son of the late John and Kate Ensley Greene.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lela A. Greene; and one son, Robert "Bob" Greene Jr.

Surviving are one daughter, Mary Jo Maidon of Cary; one sister, Lona Lowe of Asheville; one brother, L.V. Greene of Asheville; three granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Clyde Mathis

Clyde Mathis, 72, of Dillsboro Road, Dillsboro, died Monday, Oct. 30, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Ernest Ammons, Sherrill Ammons and Carl Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Long Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bobby Smathers, Kenny Mathis, Tom McGoldrick, Gary Haney, Steve Mathis and David Harris.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a member of Laurel Branch Baptist Church. He retired after 35 years from Hennessee Lumber Co. He was the son of the late Markus and Rosalee Moore Mathis and husband of the late Ruth Robinson Mathis.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Conner and Alma Osborne; and two brothers, James and Belard Mathis.

Surviving are one son, J.C. Mathis of Sylva; two daughters, Debbie Tratham and Sue Frady of Sylva; one brother, Carl Lee Mathis of Sylva; two sisters, Margaret Conner of Sylva and Selma Mathis of Prince Frederick, Md.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
