Ruth MorganRuth Dodd Morgan, 93, of Webster, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at her residence.A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, at St. John's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Perrin Radley officiated. Burial followed at St. John's Cemetery in Cartoogechaye. She was the only child of the late Eva Hoyt Dodd and Frederick Ferris Dodd. She was born in 1908 in New York City and spent her childhood in Asheville. She received a bachelor's degree in sociology from the N.C. College for Women (now UNC-Greensboro) and a master's degree in social work from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. |

She worked as a caseworker supervisor for the Department of Welfare in Orange County, taught in the School of Social Work at UNC-Chapel Hill and was the longtime owner of the Riverwood Craft Shop and Riverwood Pewter Shop in Dillsboro.
She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, the Twentieth Century Club of Sylva and, in 1992, was honored with a lifetime membership in the Southern Highland Craft Guild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Ralph Siler Morgan. Surviving are one son, Ralph Siler Morgan Jr. of Webster; three daughters, Mary Morgan Elvington of Spartanburg, S.C., and Ruth Morgan McConnell and Susan Morgan Leveille, both of Webster; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Amos GillespieAmos Gillespie, 60, of Mountain City, Ga., died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at his residence after an extended illness. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at Beck Funeral Home in Clayton, Ga.He was born on Oct. 2, 1942, son of the late Jessie Dover Gillespie and Mary Pearl Dotson Gillespie. He spent his childhood in Sylva before his family moved to Rabun County, Ga. Surviving are one son, Steve Gillespie of Dunwoody, Ga.; two daughters, Lori Gillespie of Mountain City and Sarah Beth Gillespie of Houston; and three grandchildren. Emma SistiEmma Jean Messer Sisti, 71, of Dillsboro, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at Mission-St. Joseph's Health System in Asheville.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church in Dillsboro. The Revs. Paul Carden and Ernie Jamison officiated. Burial was in Parris Cemetery. As a member of Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church, her positions of service there included youth leader, Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School director, children's choir leader and Women's Missionary Union officer. She was a native of Dillsboro. She was preceded in death by her father, Lynn Adam Messer; her husband of 49 years, Vincent Sisti; her foster father, Charles "Sod" Messer; one brother, Lynn Adam Messer Jr.; and one sister, Mildred Messer Petroski. Surviving are her mother, Iva Lee Crisp Messer; foster mother, Margie Chambers Messer of Dillsboro; three sons, Vincent L. Sisti of Sunrise, Fla., Charlie Sisti of Charleston, S.C., and Joe Sisti of Otto; one daughter, Carmella Taylor of Candler; three brothers, Jim Messer of Franklin, Larry Messer of Georgia and T.C. Messer of Hendersonville; six sisters, Clara Berry of Fletcher, Bennie Stepp of Hendersonville, Betty Gordon of Calhoun, Tenn., Martha McConnell of Iva, S.C., Johnnie Messer Raines of Salisbury and Marian Franks of Dillsboro; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Charlie WelchCharlie Bear Welch, 52, of Rose Lane, Cherokee, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at the home of Teddy Rose.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at Big Cove Baptist Church. The Revs. "Bo" Parris and Doug Mathews officiated. Burial was in Welch Family Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, he was a truck driver for Eastern Band Tribal Construction and member of Big Cove Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one son, Charles Anderson Welch Jr. Surviving are one daughter, Charla Welch Zuniga of Cherokee; and two grandchildren. Dave BroomJ.H. Dave Broom, 64, of Vader, Wash., died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, in Longview, Wash.Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at Vader Assembly of God Church. Larry Bentz officiated. Burial was at Little Falls Cemetery. Born Aug. 3, 1938, in Jackson County's Argura community, he was a son of Laurene Mathis Broom Shelton of Sylva and the late Odas Broom. He had lived in the Vader area for 33 years. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, his 20 years of service included a tour in Vietnam. He was a gunnery sergeant. He worked for 13 years at IFA Nursery in Toledo and was a member of the Assembly of God, Vader. He was preceded in death by one brother, Carlos Broom; one sister, Gladys Dillard; and one daughter, Janette Thomasen. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 19 years, Carol L. Broom of Vader; two sons, Dennis of Colorado and Jay of Minnesota; one stepson, Earl Crawford of Vader; two stepdaughters, Kathy M. Crawford of Toledo and Cindy Ranz of Boulder City, Nev.; two brothers, Nathan of Georgia and Kay of Sylva; two sisters, Rosemary Bates of Ballpark, Ga., and Virginia Nations of Sylva; and four grandchildren. Robin GriffinRobin Scott Griffin Sr., 36, of 310 East Cleveland Ave., Bessemer City, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Beech Avenue Baptist Church in Gastonia. Rick Duncan officiated.A native of Gaston County, he was a 1984 graduate of Bessemer City High School and formerly coached boy's pitch baseball and girl's softball. He was employed by Wallace Computer Services and was a member of Beech Avenue Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Renee; two daughters, Amanda Grigg of Bessemer City and Elizabeth Griffin of the home; two sons, Kyle and Scott Griffin, also of the home; his parents, Ralph and Brenda Griffin of Gastonia; paternal grandparents, Ralph and Connie Griffin of Gastonia; maternal grandmother, Katie Lewis of Mt. Janie LeftwichJanie E. Allison Leftwich, 82, of Cullowhee, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. A native of Waverly, Tenn., she was a resident of Nashville, Tenn., before moving to Cullowhee in 1947. She was a graduate of Western Carolina University, where she received a bachelor of science degree magna cum laude in 1952 and a master's degree in 1957 and was a member of Alpha Phi Sigma. She studied at Peabody, Vanderbilt, East Carolina and received European Study Tours credits. She was a homemaker and teacher for 24 years before retiring as assistant professor from Western Carolina University's art department. She taught for six years in Jackson County public schools. She was a member of Cullowhee United Methodist Church, past member of N.C. State Employee Association, AARP and Cullowhee Garden Club. She was a daughter of the late Arch D. and Margaret "Pearl" Robbins Allison and wife of the late Rodney L. Leftwich.
She was preceded in death by one sister. Surviving are one daughter, Linda Allison Leftwich Moore of Spaneway, Wash.; three brothers, Rodney H. Leftwich of Horse Shoe, David Brent Leftwich of Clayton, and Dr. Phillip Robbins Leftwich of Waynesville; and three grandchildren. Moody Funeral Home is assisting the family with local arrangements. Eleanor CriderEleanor Marie Crider, 73, of Whittier, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at her residence.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Shoal Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. William Smith Jr. and Dick Braby will officiate. Burial will be in Thomas Cemetery. The family was to have received friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Crisp Funeral Home in Bryson City. She was born in Farmington, Pa., on Sept. 30, 1929, and lived in Dearborn, Mich., for 40 years before relocating with her husband to Whittier. During her career she was an operator for Michigan Bell Telephone Co., housewife and elementary school teacher in Detroit after graduating from Eastern Michigan University with bachelor's and master's degrees in elementary education. She was preceded in death by her father, Emmitt Herring; and one brother, Lindsey Herring.
Surviving are her husband, Henry Crider Sr.; two sons, Larry Crider of Detroit and Henry Crider of Newton; two daughters, Laura Barksdale of Fort Smith, Ark., and Rhonda Knight of Wilmington; mother, Nellie Marie Herring of Whittier; one sister, Alice Hughes Branter of Whittier; and six grandchildren. Paul Goforth, 86, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at a Sylva nursing center after a period of declining health.A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Eddie Stillwell and Steve Webb will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service. A son of the late Wilbert and Oma Joyce Goforth, he was born in Chehalis, Wash., and lived in North Carolina for 27 years. He was retired from the Federal Aviation Administration as an electronic engineer and was an electrical contractor for many years. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elboyn Gibson and Don Gibson; and one sister, Beverlee Gibson TeVrucht. Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Inez Oxner Goforth; two daughters, Neola Ingram of Seattle and Debbie Rhinehart of Whittier; one son, Paul D. Goforth of Seattle; one brother, Rex Gibson of Oregon; one sister, Jeune Gibson of Tacoma, Wash.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
