James Sapp
James Everett Sapp, Jr., 88, of Albany, Ga., and Tuckasegee, died Thursday,
Oct. 23, 2003, after a period of declining health.
A native of Albany, he graduated from Duke University with a law degree
in 1938 and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He
spent most of his working years as a corporate lawyer and vice president
of Standard Brands, Inc.. in New York City, retiring to Albany and Tuckasegee
in 1971.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Van Cise Sapp of Albany; two daughters,
Janet S. Kapp of Tuckasegee and Claudia J. Sapp of Albany; two sons,
James W. Sapp of Raleigh, and Charles W. Sapp of Athens, Ga.; and three
grandsons.

Finley Herron
Finley Herron, 82, of the Conleys Creek community, Whittier, died Monday,
Oct. 27, 2003, in a Swain County hospital.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Conleys
Creek Freewill Baptist Church, of which he was a member. Evangelist
Harold Herron and Robert Odiear officiated. Burial was in Jones Cemetery.
A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Albert and Cora
Odiear Herron. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World
War II.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Margaret Messer Frady.
Surviving are one daughter, Velma Reed of York, S.C.; three sons, Harold
Herron of Belmont, Steve Herron of Whittier and Thomas Herron of Blacksburg,
S.C.; 19 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren
and great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

John Brown
John A. Brown, 73, of Kitchens Branch Road, Sylva, died of cancer Saturday,
Oct. 25, 2003, at Skyland Care Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Melton-Riddle
Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Wayne Hill and Dr. John Bunn officiated.
Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted
by Sylva American Legion Post 104 and the U.S. Air Force. Pallbearers
were Sam Beck, Brent Barnes, Jack Cope, David Monteith, Pat Bailey,
Ray Lewis, Clyde Vance and Phil Cauley. Honorary pallbearers were Drexel
Heritage employees.
A native of Waynesboro, Ky., he moved to Jackson County in 1966. He
was employed by Drexel Heritage Furnishings. In 1966 he opened and managed
the Drexel plant at Whittier. He graduated from high school in Hildebran
and was a graduate of N.C. State University.
He attended Sylva First Baptist Church, was a former member of the Rotary
Club and a C.J. Harris Hospital Board of Trustees, chairman of the Home
Health Advisory Committee and Jackson County Chapter of the American
Red Cross. A U.S. Air Force veteran of Korea, he was a son of the late
Arthur Allen and Mattie Mae Hudson Brown.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Brown.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth True Worthen Brown; and one son, John
Amzey Brown II of Canton.

Veda Sutton
Veda Brooks Sutton, 91, of Whittier, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at
Mountain View Manor in Bryson City after a period declining health.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, at Rockdale
Baptist Church. The Revs. Ed Kilgore and Charles Brown officiated. Burial
was at Locust Field Cemetery in Dillsboro.
She was a native and lifelong resident of the Barkers Creek community
in Jackson County and a member of Rockdale Baptist Church. She was a
daughter of the late Thomas and Polly Gunter Brooks and was the wife
of the late Burt Sutton, who died Feb. 28, 1986.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by
six brothers and sisters.
Surviving are two daughters; Jennie Miller of Whittier and Patsy Burnette
of Brevard; one son, Harold Sutton of Bryson City; one sister, Gertie
Nations of Whittier; one brother, Richard Brooks of Whittier; six grandchildren
and 10 great-grandchildren.

Roscoe Higdon
Roscoe John Higdon, 84, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at the Fountains
in Yuba City, Calif.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, at the
Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church.
Private burial will be held in the Smoky Mountains.
A native of Macon County and a Master Sgt. with the Army Air Force during
World War II, he earned a Bronze Star Medal of Honor. Following the
war, he received a doctorate of horticulture in 1953 from Michigan State
College.
He raised his family in Medford, Ore., where he worked for Harry &
David. He was instrumental in the merger between Jackson Perkins Roses
and Harry & David. In the 1970s he moved his family to Yuba City,
Calif., where he worked for DiGorgio Fruit Corp. as a consultant. He
also taught evening courses for Chapman College at Beale Air Force Base
and tutored servicemen.
He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Keith Higdon.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Bernice Cowan Higdon of Yuba City;
one son, Rodrick Higdon of Sacramento, Calif.; one daughter, Krista
Higdon; and one brother, Woodrow Higdon of Sylva.

Vivian Donald
Vivian Frazer Donald, 88, of Gatlinburg, Tenn., died Monday, Oct.
20, 2003, at Sevier County Health Care Center.
Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Trinity
Episcopal Church in Gatlinburg. Father Charles Livermore officiated.
She lived at Mtn. Brook Village for three years. She was a graduate
of Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C., and taught for 33 years in
the Alabama school system, most of those years in English literature.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William J. Donald; and
stepson, Joe Paul Donald.
Surviving are two daughters, Sara Donald Jenkins of Gatlinburg and Lucy
Donald Causby of Sylva; one stepson, William J. Donald of Tuscaloosa,
Ala.; one stepdaughter, Jane Donald Smith of Fairhope, Ala.; one brother,
Frank Betz Frazer, of Mobile, Ala.; one sister, Nancy Frazer Luckett,
of S. Salem, N.Y.; and one grandson.

Jessie Fouts

Jessie Fouts, 82, of Candler, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, after a
long period of declining health.
Funeral services were in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home Thursday,
Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. The Revs. Jack W. Collins and Butch Stillwell officiated.
Burial was in Forest Lawn Mausoleum in Enka. Pallbearers were Kevin
Burrell, Shannon Fouts, Casey Fouts, Kevin Jones, Calvin Kilby and Donny
Parris.
Born in Swain County on May 16, 1921, he was the oldest of three children
born to the late Moses Fouts and Florence Brooks Fouts.
He was preceded in death by his foster parents, William "Coot"
Wood and Ora Hooper Wood Jones; stepmother, Lola Luther Fouts; first
wife, Minnie Mae Morgan Fouts; one brother, Donald Fouts; one half-brother,
R. L. Fouts; and one sister, Gladys Fouts Heines.
Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Sue Kilby Fouts of the home; one
daughter, Joyce Fouts Jones of Asheville; two sons, Jessie Lonnel "Sonny"
Fouts and George R. Fouts, both of Anderson, S.C; five half-sisters,
Mozell Fouts Miller of Boone, Nina Fouts Peek and Ruby Fouts Thompson,
both of Ronggold, Va., Flora Fouts Turner of Spartanburg County, S.C.,
and Lenora Fouts Wood of Abilene, Texas; three grandsons; two stepgrandsons;
and three step-great-grandchildren.
He was a World War II veteran, having served more than five years in
the 129th Army Air Force Base Unit, part of which was in Europe. He
received several decorations and citations, including the Eamet Campaign
Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, American Defense Service Medal
and the Good Conduct Medal. He had been a member of Balsam Grove Baptist
Church in Jackson County for many years and had attended other churches
in Buncombe County until his health failed him.

Clara Hollifield
Clara Faye Stephens Hollifield, 89, of Caroleen, died Thursday, Oct.
23, 2003, at Rutherford Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at Harrelson Funeral
Home. The Rev. Trey Gilliam officiated. Burial was in Caroleen-Henrietta
Cemetery.
A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Douglas
Houston and Prelia Parker Stephens. She was a homemaker and member of
Caroleen Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Hollifield.
Surviving are two sons, Jerry Hollifield and Steve Hollifield, both
of Forest City; one daughter, Brenda Hollifield of Hendersonville; two
half-brothers, Huty Stephens of Cullowhee and D.H. Stephens of Arizona;
one half-sister, Mary Ann Wilson of Austin, Texas; four grandchildren;
and eight great-grandchildren.

Aldon Buchanan
Aldon Odell Buchanan, 82, of Sutton Branch Road, Sylva, died Monday,
Oct. 27, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining
health.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Old Savannah
Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. David Souderes and
Clifford Parker will officiate. Burial will be in Old Savannah Cemetery
with military rites conducted by Sylva American Legion Post 104 and
the U.S. Navy. Pallbearers will be Frankie Buchanan, Johnny Buchanan,
Arnold Cabe, Mark Buchanan, Doug Hall, Brad Buchanan, Freddie Sutton
and Stacy Buchanan.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from N.C.
Department of Transportation in the maintenance division. He was a farmer,
a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Jackson County
Fox Hunters Assoc. He was a son of the late Edd and Clearsie McMahan
Buchanan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie Greene Buchanan, who died
in 1998; one daughter, Aldena Connor; and one brother, Donald Buchanan.
Surviving are two sons, Kelly Joe Buchanan of Brevard and Lewis Edward
Buchanan of Sylva; six sisters, Hilda Sutton, Catherine Green, Louise
Cabe, Frankie Cowan, Pauline Henderson and Jo Ann Garnes, all of Sylva;
two brothers, Ray Buchanan of Dillsboro and Kenneth "Buddy"
Buchanan of Sylva; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday,
Oct. 29, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.

Elizabeth Bryson
Elizabeth Jean Poteet Bryson, 75, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died Monday,
Oct. 27, 2003, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at Young Funeral
Home. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. tonight (Thursday).
She was raised in Jackson County. A retired teacher of the Princeton
School District, she taught at Springdale and Glendale Elementary for
29 years. She was a longtime volunteer for the Playhouse Ensemble and
Arnoff Theatres.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Jane Buchanan; and two brothers,
Glenn Poteet and Charles Poteet.
Surviving are three sons, Gary Bryson, David Bryson and Steve Bryson;
one sister, Thelma Joy Woodard; and seven grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the public library or to
Hospice of Cincinnati.

Oteila Rigdon
Oteila P. Rigdon, 86, of Pisgah Forest, died on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, in the chapel of Moody-Connolly
Funeral Home in Brevard. The Rev. Ray Talley officiated. Burial was
in Pisgah Gardens Cemetery.
She was a native of Jackson County and daughter of the late Hester William
and Hattie Mathis Phillips. She was a member of Pisgah Forest Baptist
Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Rigdon and one daughter,
Barbara Rigdon.
Surviving are three daughters, LaVerne Stewart of Iron Station, Louise
Handley of Northglenn, Colo., and Shirley Fry of Marana, Ariz.; two
brothers, Dealous and Kermit Phillips, both of Tuckasegee; three sisters,
Birdell Garren of Pisgah Forest, Kathleen Collins of Brevard and Juanita
McCall of Mills River; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
