Thomas Farmer

"Thomas" Edison' Farmer, 70, of Rocky Point, died Friday, Oct. 20, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel. The Rev. Rudy Shepard officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Park with full military honors.

A native of the Cowarts community, he was the son of the late Thad Wilson Farmer and Kate Alexander Farmer. He was a member of Peace Baptist Church in Wilmington. A 1960 graduate of Western Carolina University, he moved to Wilmington in 1966, spending several years with 7-Eleven Corp., Convenient Food Mart and retiring from Corning in 1992. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Frankie Beck Farmer; three sons, Tony Farmer of Carolina Beach; Gary Farmer of Burgaw, Alan Farmer of Wilmington; one daughter, Teri Farmer Garris; one sister, Carrie Frizzelle of Lexington; and four grandchildren.

Robert Means

Robert Elmer Means, 78, of Cashiers, died Saturday, Oct. 14, in Highlands-Cashiers Hospital..

A private memorial service was held..

A native of Rock Creek, Ohio, he was a resident of Cashiers for the past five years. During his life he worked as a butcher, owned and operated a slaughter house and, in later years, managed a delicatessen..

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Mildred Jane Means of the home; two daughters, Deborah Means Rutan of Seffner, Fla., and Linda Means Rutan of Cashiers; one sister, Wilimeana Brown of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; and two grandchildren..

Walter Warren

Walter Dean Warren, 76, of Thomas Street, Sylva, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, at his residence..

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20, in the First United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Joe Fulk officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native and resident of Jackson County, he retired after 38 years with Jackson Paper and Mead Corporation. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a graduate of Western Carolina University. He was a son of the late Walter and Lela Henson Warren.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Warren of the home; one son, Stephen Warren of Brevard; one brother, Charles Warren of Sylva; and two grandchildren. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



John Bentley

John Lee Bentley, 72, of Bee Tree Road, Glenville, died Thursday, Oct. 19, in Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at Hamburg Baptist Church. The Revs. Harry Vance and Lester Sutton officiated. Burial was in Hamburg Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean conflict. He was a member of Hamburg Baptist Church and the Glenville-Cashiers Rescue Squad. He was the son of the late Joel Davis and Gertrude Watson Bentley.

Surviving are his wife, Henrietta M. Bentley of the home; four daughters, Karen Bentley of Glenville; Jolene Coggins of Glenville; Tracy Fowler of Cashiers and Brenda Byrd of Brevard; one sister, Sadie Bolick of Highlands; and five grandchildren.

Temple Smith

Dr. C. Temple Smith, 74, of Monterey, La., died Monday, Oct. 23, in Monterey.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the First Baptist Church of Jonesville, La. Dr. Ralph Webber and the Rev. James Carson will officiate. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery in Pollock, La. Pallbearers will be Hiram Smith, Aubrey Mophett, Harvey Smith, James Eskew, Cliff Hayes, and Jim Wilson.

A retired professor music at Western Carolina University, he was a minister of music at several churches. He was a decorated World War II veteran and a member of First Baptist Church of Jonesville.

Surviving include several nieces and nephews.



Henry Owle

Henry Everett Owle, 39, of the Birdtown community of Cherokee, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at Bethabara Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Bob Christopher officiated. Burial was in the Owle Family Cemetery. Pallbearers were Curtis Fish, Jerry Dugan, John Dugan, Boyd Owle, Jim Owle and James McNabb.

A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, he was a self-employed stone carver. He was a son of Betty Bradley Owle of Cherokee and the late Lloyd Soloman Owle.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one daughter, Evie Owle; two sons, Joseph Owle and Cody Owle; five brothers, Robert E. Owle, Frank W. Bradley, Lloyd C. Owle, T. Dewey Owle and Freeman L. Owle, all of Cherokee; and five sisters, Jesse O. Dugan, Annette O. Fish, Catherine C. Owle, Ruby O. Crowe, and Margaret "Peggy" O. Wolfe, all of Cherokee. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Virgil Brooks

Virgil Brooks, 81, of the Barkers Creek community of Whittier, died Thursday, Oct. 19, at his residence after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at Rockdale Baptist Church. The Rev. Larry Perry officiated. Burial was in Barker's Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lester Sutton, Ronnie Sutton, Kevin Brooks, Grady Brooks, Mark Brooks, Kenny Cheek and Joe L. Messer. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Rockdale Baptist Church.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a farmer and had retired from construction work. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a charter member of Rockdale Baptist Church, where he had been a deacon for 52 years formerly serving as chairman, and was chairman of Barkers Creek Cemetery. He was a son of the late Joe and Alva Jones Brooks.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mildred Sutton Brooks; and two sons, Randy Brooks of East Asia and Greg Brooks of Franklin.

Robert Conley

Robert Taylor "R.T." Conley, 62, of Nicol Arms Apartments, Sylva, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, in Liberty Baptist Church. The Rev. Wanda Moore officiated.

A native of Jackson County, he lived most of his life in Chicago. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and a 1957 graduate of Stevens-Lee High School in Asheville. He was a son of the late George A. Conley and husband of the late Gwendolyn Willis.

Surviving are his mother, Mildred Conley of Sylva; one son, Shannon Willis of Tillery; one brother, Herbert Conley of Sylva; and two sisters, Margaret Johnson of Asheville and Glorinda Henry of Country Club Hills, Ill.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Dick Greene

Robert "Dick" Greene of the Dillardtown community of Sylva, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Cary. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home will announce arrangements.
