Rose

Heather Payne

Heather Brooke Payne, 17, of Barkers Creek Road, Whittier, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at Northeast Medical Center in Georgia from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. David Burch, Carl Adams and Ned Pressley officiated. Burial was in Barkers Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Carroll Cagle, David Cagle, Bob Messer, Matt Clark, Jamie Burch and Jack Sutton.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and attended Smokey Mountain Elementary School and Smoky Mountain High School.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, William Roy Payne.

Surviving are her parents, Terry "Shorty" Payne and Lauren Kay Lindsay Payne of Whittier; one brother, Benjamin Lee Payne of Whittier; maternal grandparents, William "Bill" John Lindsay Jr. and Shirley M. Lindsay of Whittier; and paternal grandmother, Mary Sue Payne of Whittier.

Cora Jones

Cora Lee Jones, 93, of 80 Maple Springs Road, Asheville, formerly of Sylva, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, after a period of declining health at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at Rockdale Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Abe Brooks and D.J. Abernathy officiated. Burial was in Barkers Creek Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Jason and Laura Wykle. She was the wife of the late Early Jones, who died in 1956.

Surviving are two daughters, Edna Davis of Asheville and Lois Davis of Sylva; three sons, Junior, J.B. and Curly Jones, all of Asheville; eight grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Flossie Potts

Flossie McCall Potts, 84, of Yellow Mountain community of Cashiers died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, in a local nursing home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. The Revs. Eddie Stillwell, Mike Fox and Tommy Holden officiated. Burial was in Potts Cemetery. Pallbearers were Johnny Ammons, Gregg Conner, Dwight Holden, Derrick Potts, Justin Roger and Brantley Potts.

A native of Macon County, she was a daughter of the late William Z. McCall and Essie Hedden McCall. She was a member of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church and a member of the #1 Women's Sunday school class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Leonard Potts, who died in 1982, and one son, Jimmy Potts, who died in 1955.

Surviving are four sons, Roy Potts of Highlands, Curly Potts of Yellow Mountain, Dennis Potts of Black Duck, Minn., and Robbie Potts of Yellow Mountain; three daughters, Helen Holden of Norton, Willene Conner of Franklin and Gail Rogers of Highlands; two sisters, Violet Stewart and Edna Myers, both of Brevard; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Macon Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Robert Henson

Robert Henson, 58, of Mineral Springs Drive, Sylva, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Ochre Hill Baptist Church. The Revs. Hardin Nicholson and Terry Wehunt will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites conducted by Sylva American Legion Post 104. Pallbearers will be Kevin Henson, Tony Hall, Issac Hall, Stacy Henson, Heath Henson and Billy Daves.

A native of Jackson County, he was a retired brakeman with CSX Railroad, a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Western Hills Baptist Church in Kennesaw, Ga. He was a son of the late William Rufus and Hester Nicholson Henson.

Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Daisy Mills Henson; one daughter, Teresa Ann Morris of Canton, Ga.; one son, Robert Kevin Henson of Jasper, Ga.; one sister, Patsy Hall of Sylva; three brothers, Carl Henson of Franklin and James and Alvin Henson, both of Sylva; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society P.O. Box 925, Sylva, N.C. 28779, or St. Jude Childrenıs Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place., Memphis, Tenn. 38105-1905.

The family was to have received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.



Michael Kinsland

Michael T. Kinsland, 52, of Ivy Hill Lane, Whittier, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, in Harris Regional Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. The Rev. Ron Allen and Ray Kinsland will officiate. Burial will be in Thomas Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Ted and Eunice Turpin Kinsland. He was owner and operator of Mike's Body Shop in Whittier.

Surviving are two sisters, Linda Ringel of Whittier and Judy Abrahamson of Knoxville, Tenn.



Buddy Smith

Buddy Smith, 69, of 29 Lodge Lane, Waynesville, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in the mausoleum chapel of Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Dr. Jack Bishop officiated. Entombment followed the services. Members of the Clyde Masonic Lodge served as pallbearers.

A native of Jackson County, he lived in Haywood County for more than 39 years. He was a son of the late Pritchard C. and Lucy Belle Massie Smith.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Waynesville and Clyde Masonic Lodge 453. He owned and operated several businesses in Waynesville and the surrounding area for more than 20 years.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Gail Robinson Smith; two sons, Van Frazier Smith of Hickory and Gregory Pritchard Smith of Birmingham, Ala.; one daughter, Dawn Stephanie Hays of Waynesville; one sister, Francis Webb of Sylva; and six grandchildren.

Deshia Haskett

Deshia Louise Passmore Haskett, 69, of Thomasville, formerly of Sylva, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the chapel of Moody Funeral Home.

She was a daughter of the late Alex and Birdie Passmore.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Haskett; one son, Jerry Haskett; and one brother, Walker Passmore.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Thompson of Thomasville and Lavada Haskett of Gastonia; six sisters, Dorothy Haskett of Franklin, Isabell Pressley of Sylva, Mary Ellen Adams of Morganton, Syblene McAbee of Anderson, S.C., Jackie Elliott of Michigan, and Arlene Sorrells of Thomasville; two brothers, Wilburn Passmore of Sylva and James Passmore of Franklin; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jack Womack

Jack Womack, 72, of Roxie Lane, Franklin, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at Sugarfork Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Alton Dendy, Jim Crayton, Don Moffitt and Darryl Womack officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Harold Crisp, Jerry Young, Don Capaforte, Shane Armour, Dennis Justice and Nathan Sims. Honorary pallbearers were Tim Hayes, Bobby Bolick, Charles Coker, Don Hardy, Paul Shuler, Boyd Tallent and Roy Jones.

A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Harry Lee and Roxie Arnold Womack. He served in the U.S. Navy directly after World War II, serving in the U.S. and China. He later became a journeyman electrician serving out of Local 760 in Knoxville, Tenn. While an electrician, he worked in 38 of the 50 states and retired after 36 years of work.

Surviving are his wife, Louise Jones Womack; two sons, Darren Lee Womack of Franklin and the Rev. Darryl Dion Womack of Lula, Ga.; and five grandchildren.

Rachel Hoxit

Rachel A. Hoxit, 90, of Penrose, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, in a Brevard nursing home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Holly Springs Baptist Church. The Revs. John Whitmire and Tommy Owen officiated. Burial was in Holly Springs Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Jut and Minnie Harris Alexander.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Hoxit; and two sons, Ralph and Glen Hoxit.

Surviving are three sons, Robert Hoxit of Penrose and Tom Harold and Roy Hoxit both of Pisgah Forest; four daughters, Pauline Hamilton and Susie Maybin, both of Penrose, Ruthie Owenby of Pisgah Forest and Katie Blythe of Brevard; two sisters, Margaret and Willie Mathis, both of Jackson County; one brother, Tolvin Alexander of Buncombe County; 32 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

Moody-Connolly Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Dorothy Shelton

Dorothy Ann Shelton, 81, of Cherokee, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, after a period of declining health at Britthaven Care Center in Franklin.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home. Father Heber F. Peacock officiated.

A native of Virginia and a resident of Swain County for the past 24 years, she was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Cherokee. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the International Private Detective Association. She was a daughter of the late John Thomas and Mary Elizabeth East Ross.

She was preceded in death by one son, Johnny Allen; two brothers, Robert Henry Ross and Marris Ross; and one sister, Alice Ross Wally.

Surviving are her husband, R.C. Shelton of the home; one son, Francis Thomas Allen of Cherokee; two daughters, Linda Allen Waits of Rockmart, Ga., and Kathy Marie Maney of Cherokee; one brother, Ivine Lee Ross of Cape Charles, Va.; two sisters, Hazel Mae Ross Crockett of Harbeeton, Va., and Mary Idda Ross of Mafla, Va.; and one granddaughter.



Charles Sims

Charles Issac Sims, infant son of Lisa Sims and Ron Starkey, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Harris Regional hospital.

Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Pine Creek Cemetery. Bill Massie officiated.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Brandon Sims.

Surviving, in addition to the parents, are the maternal grandparents, Charles Sims and Judy Sims of Tuckasegee; paternal grandparents, Sherry and Ronald Starkey of Thomasville; and paternal great-grandmother, Betty Starkey of Thomasville, Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
