Early Deitz
Early Deitz, 103, of Sylva's East Fork community, died Sunday, Oct.
19, 2003, in Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the chapel
of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Robert Blanton, Eddie Stillwell
and Eddie Deitz officiated. Burial was in East Fork Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Cantrell, Andrew Cabe, Bruce Buchanan, Bill
Foxx, Paul Cowan and Russell Ensley. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Butkovich,
Lloyd Cowan, Hampton Deitz and Walker Deitz.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from the
N.C. Department of Transportation Sign Department. He served on the
Jackson County Board of Education and was a member of East Fork Baptist
Church, where he had served as superintendent of Sunday school and was
also a Sunday school teacher.
The son of the late William Thomas and Emry Wilson Deitz, he was the
husband of Gladys Herring Deitz, who died in 1999.
Surviving are two daughters, Eunice D. Nicholson of Sylva and Marian
D. Hall of Waynesville; one son, James M. of Waynesville; seven grandchildren;
and 10 great-grandchildren.

Bonnie Rogers
Bonnie Palmer Rogers, 91, of U.S. 64 West, Cashiers, died Saturday,
Oct. 18, 2003, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, in Cashiers Baptist
Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Art Fowler, Johnny Norris
and Delbert McCall officiated. Burial was in Pine Creek Baptist Church
Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jackie Moss, Buck Moss, J.C. Norris, Leon
Shelton, Sam Palmer, Robert Jones, Brandon Jones and Jesse Palmer.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the last surviving
child of the late Phillip Hayward and Sarah Kirby Palmer. Her husband,
Arthur Lee Rogers, died in 1989.
Surviving are one son, Alex Rogers of Cashiers; two grandsons; and one
great-granddaughter.
Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Parker
Kenneth Madison Parker, 60, of Eureka, Calif., died at his home of
metastatic melanoma of the liver on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003.
Memorial services were held at noon Monday, Sept. 15, at Sander's Funeral
Home. Burial was in Ocean View Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tim, Mike
and Andy Parker and Ross, Brenden and Brooks Hauzer.
A native of Tuckasegee, he moved to Washington, and later to Eureka,
during his childhood years. After graduating from Eureka High in 1961,
he served in Korea from 1964-67 where he worked as a surveyor and earned
a medal as an expert marksman. He worked for UPS for over 25 years.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence "Ed" Parker.
Surviving are his wife, Marcie; three sons, Tim, Mike and Andy; one
daughter, Angie; his mother, Bessie Cecil; two sisters, Sara Reese and
Janet Babbini; four brothers, Roger Parker, Carol Parker, Newell Parker
and Landon Parker; and six grandchildren.

Carl Clement
Carl William Clement, 87, of Hibriten Drive, Lenoir, died Wednesday,
Oct. 15, 2003, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Pendry's
Chapel. The Rev. Donald Ingle officiated.
Burial was in Blue Ridge Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Jeffrey Clement,
Michael Clement, Chad Clement, Jason Clement, Scott Clement, Samuel
Clement, Jamison Clement, John Bolick Jr., David Bolick and Douglas
Bolick.
A self-employed general contractor, he was born June 20, 1916, in Jackson
County. Son of the late Walter Mack and Flora Parker Clement, he was
a Mason and a Shriner.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Judy Clement Hartzog; and
three brothers, Clarence E. Clement, Robert Clement and Walter Mack
Clement Jr.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby Reagan Clement ; three sons, Richard Noel
Clement of Catawba, William Everett Clement of Hudson and Walter Lee
Clement of Whittier; one daughter, Sue Clement Bolick of Granite Falls;
two brothers, Fred Clement of Anderson, S.C., and Bruce Clement of Whittier;
one sister, Hazel Clement Owens of Whittier; 14 grandchildren; and 11
great-grandchildren.

Addie Morton
Addie Bumgarner Morton, 79, of Lilesville, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003,
in Heritage Hills Nursing Home in Wadesboro.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, in Fall Branch
Baptist Church. The Revs. Bill Whitlow and Joe Kirkpatrick officiated.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
She was born Oct. 20, 1923, in Jackson County to the late Roy Carl and
Mabel Ashe Bumgarner. She was the wife of Floyd Morton, who died in
1978, and was also preceded in death by one grandson.
Surviving are two sons, Wayne Morton and Tommy Morton, both of Lilesville;
four daughters, Helen Martin and Sue McElroy, both of Lilesville, Barbara
Trantham of Clyde and Doris Mauldin of Norwood; one brother, Bud Bumgarner
of Cullowhee; two sisters, Thelma Dill and Doris Ammons, both of Cullowhee;
19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Homer Taylor
Homer Gene Taylor, 66, of Vero Mountain Road, Sylva, died Sunday, Oct.
19, 2003, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the chapel
of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Johnny Norris and Dennis Burrell
officiated. Burial was in Tellico Plains, Tenn., at 1 p.m. Wednesday,
Oct. 22, at Carpenter Cemetery.
A native of Tellico Plains, he had lived in Jackson County since 1976,
and was owner and operator of Independent Used Cars and Salvage. Son
of the late Grady R. and Callie Mae Davis Taylor, he was a U.S. Air
Force veteran.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Clarence E. Taylor.
Surviving are four daughters, Peggy Sue Buchanan, Lisa Michele Crawford,
Teena Marie Woodard and Kelly Jean Robinson, all of Sylva; one sister,
Emma Lee Walker of Tellico Plains; and nine grandchildren.

Vivian Donald
Vivian Frazer Donald, 88, of Gatlinburg, Tenn., died Monday, Oct.
20, 2003 at Sevier County Health Care Center.
Memorial service were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Trinity
Episcopal Church in Gatlinburg. Father Charles Livermore officiated.
Memorials may be made to Converse College, Alumni Fund, Spartanburg,
S.C.
She lived at Mtn. Brook Village for three years. She was a graduate
of Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C., and taught 33 years in the
Alabama school system, most of those years in English Literature. She
was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.
She was preceded in death by her husband; Dr. William J. Donald; and
stepson Joe Paul Donald.
Surviving are daughters, Sara Donald Jenkins of Gatlinburg and Lucy
Donald Causby of Sylva; one stepson, William J. Donald of Tuscaloosa,
Ala.; one stepdaughter, Jane Donald Smith of Fairhope, Ala.; one brother:
Frank Betz Frazer of Mobile, Ala.; one sister: Nancy Frazer Luckett
of S. Salem, N.Y.; and one grandson.

Jessie Fouts

Jessie Fouts, 82, of Candler, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, after a
long period of declining health.
Funeral services will be in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home
today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. The Revs. Jack W. Collins and Butch Stillwell
will officiate. Pallbearers will be Kevin Burrell, Shannon Fouts, Casey
Fouts, Kevin Jones, Calvin Kilby and Donny Parris. Burial will be at
Forest Lawn Mausoleum in Enka.
Born in Swain County on May 16, 1921, he was the oldest of three children
born to the late Moses Fouts and Florence Brooks Fouts.
He was preceded in death by his foster parents, William "Coot"
Wood and Ora Hooper Wood Jones; step-mother, Lola Luther Fouts; first
wife Minnie Mae Morgan Fouts; one brother, Donald Fouts; one half-brother
R. L. Fouts; and one sister, Gladys Fouts Heines.
Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Sue Kilby Fouts of the home; one
daughter, Joyce Fouts Jones of Asheville, two sons; Jessie Lonnel "Sonny"
Fouts and George R. Fouts, both of Anderson, S.C; five half-sisters:
Mozell Fouts Miller of Boone, Nina Fouts Peek and Ruby Fouts Thompson,
both of Ronggold, Va., Flora Fouts Turner of Spartanburg County, S.C.,
and Lenora Fouts Wood of Abilene, Texas; three grandsons; two step-grandsons;
and three step-great-grandchildren.
He was a World War II veteran, having served over five years in the
129th Army Air Force Base Unit, part of which was in Europe. He received
several decorations and citations, including the Eamet Campaign Medal
with three bronze service stars, American Defense Service Medal and
the Good Conduct Medal. He had been an active member of Balsam Grove
Baptist Church in Jackson County for many years and had attended other
churches in Buncombe County until his health failed him.
