Claude BuchananClaude Buchanan, 95, of Sylva's Greens Creek community, died Saturday, Oct. 14, in Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Old Savannah Baptist Church. The Revs. Clifford Parker, Ray McCall, Bill Sutton and Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Charles Cagle, G.W. Revis, Ray Buchanan, Bob Parker, James Revis, Richard Bell, Johnny and Buddy Buchanan. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a farmer and cattleman and a member of Old Savannah Baptist Church for 61 years. He was the son of the late James Erastus and Darcus Jane Brooks Buchanan. |

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Gribble Buchanan, who died in 1976; one grandson; two sisters; and six brothers.
Surviving are one daughter, Audrey King of Candler; one brother, Scroop Buchanan of Hoquiam, Wash.; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson. Martha GrossMartha Lou Gross, 77, of 504 Magnolia Ave., Frederick, Md., died at home Friday, Oct. 6, following a 10-month battle with leukemia.A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Coffman Chapel, Hood College, Frederick, Md. Mary Ellen Geisler will preside. A native of Jackson County's Canada community, she was a daughter of the late Lewy Howard Broom and Mattie Ammons Broom. She moved to Maryland about 1956 and graduated from Mt. Airy High School there in 1961. She had been in the real estate business since 1979, working for various real estate agencies and eventually obtaining her own brokers license and forming her own company, Home Enterprises. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mack Carroll Broom and Timothy Alan Broom; her first husband, Robert Thomas; and one stepson, Michael Eugene Gross. Surviving are her husband, Thomas J. Gross; three sons, Cameron Shane Thomas of Portland, Ore., James Dean Thomas of Columbia, Md., and Jeffrey Howard Thomas of Fairfax, Calif.; two daughters, Sandra Renee Fisher and Andreana Serene Fisher, both Frederick, Md.; two stepchildren, Martin Edward Gross and Susan Anneliese Benjamin of Wolfsville, Md.; two brothers, James Broom of Frederick and Buford Broom of Six Mile, S.C.; four sisters, Sue Stewart of Mt. Airy, Md., Frances Parris of Jefferson, Md., Bonnie Gibson of Monrovia Md., and Linda Johnson of Adamstown, Md.; three grandsons; and four step grandsons. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or individuals may consider donating blood to the American Red Cross. She received more than 100 blood transfusions during her battle with leukemia. Wanda Moore officiated. A native of Jackson County and a resident of New York City for 30 years, he returned to Sylva in 1983. He was a retired chef and son of the late Harvey and Dolly Mae Anderson Howell. Surviving are his wife, Cecelia S. Howell of Long Island, N.Y.; one son, Lewis Howell of Long Island, N.Y.; one daughter, Monica Howell of New York; one brother, Larry Howell of Georgia; and one sister, Lillie Joe Howell of Sylva. Bobbie SequoyahBobbie Cucumber Sequoyah, 56, of Cherokee's Birdtown community, died Thursday, Oct. 12, at her residence.Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, in Wrights Creek Baptist Church. A native of Sevierville, Tenn., and a resident of Cherokee, she was a daughter of the late John and Jennie Kegg Cucumber. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John D. and Charlie Cucumber; and one sister, Ardina Cucumber. Surviving are her husband of 42 years, Johnson Sequoyah; two daughters, Kina Elaine Maney and Lizzie Marie Teesatuskie, both of Cherokee; one sister, Elizabeth Hughes of Bryson City; and six grandchildren. Wilson Jr., 87, of 407 Edgewood Road, Shelby, died Thursday, Oct. 12, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.A graveside service was held Saturday, Oct. 14, at 10:30 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery. Dr. Luke Harkey officiated. A memorial service followed at Shelby Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. A native of Sylva, he was a son of the late John H. Sr. and Madge Bridges Wilson. He was a retired area supervisor with the N.C. Employment Security Commission. He was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and superintendent. He was a member of the Lions Club and served as a first sergeant in the Army during World War II. Surviving are his wife, Juanita Porter Wilson; two sons, John D. Wilson of Shelby and Stephen P. Wilson of Statesville; four sisters, Mary Tweed of Sylva, Madge Webber of Riverton, Wyo., Agnes Johnson of Waycross, Ga., and Jane Levange of Waynesville; two brothers, Wade Wilson of Dillsboro and Hal Wilson of Brentwood, Tenn.; and two granddaughters. Meroney ReedMeroney Reed, 75, of Cherokee's Wolftown community, died Thursday, Oct. 12, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the residence of Martha R. Bark on Guy Bark Road. Brothers James "Bo" Parris and Wayne Carson officiated. Burial was at Jimmy Reed Cemetery on Washington Creek. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired farmer and member of Macedonia Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Jimmy and Minda Littlejohn Reed. He was preceded in death by one brother, Edison Littlejohn. Surviving are three sisters, Margaret R. Lambert, Martha R. Bark and Ollie R. George, all of Cherokee. Mary ChiltoskeyMary Ellen Ulmer Chiltoskey, 93, of Cherokee, died Thursday, Oct. 12, at Tsali Care Center, Cherokee.Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, at Acquoni Baptist Chapel. The Rev. Heber Peacock officiated. Burial was in Drama Cemetery. A native of Demopolis, Ala., she had been a resident of Cherokee since 1942. She was a member of The University Women and St. Francis Episcopal Church. She began teaching in 1923 and taught in Cherokee from 1942 until retirement. During that time, she started the Cherokee Community Library. When she retired, she started the Free Book Center. She authored "Cherokee Cooklore," "Cherokee Plants and Medicine," "Cherokee Fairs and Festivals," "Cherokee Words" and "Aunt Mary Told Me a Story." She received several awards in both quilting and writing, including the Sequoyah Award and the 1986 Mountain Heritage Award from Western Carolina University as a major force in collecting writing and sharing the Cherokee way of life. For her work with the Cherokee, Chiltoskey was named an honorary member of the Eastern Band. She was the daughter of the late Edward W. Ulmer Sr. and Nettie A. Lipscomb Ulmer. She was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers. Surviving is her husband of 56 years, Going Back Chiltoskey. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Carolyn WatkinsCarolyn Bigmeat Lillard Watkins, 48, of Lake City, Fla., died Sunday, Oct. 15, at her residence.Funeral services will be held at noon today (Thursday) in Western Carolina Veterans Cemetery Chapel in Black Mountain. The Rev. Betty Drake will officiate. Burial will be in the Veterans Cemetery following the services. A native of Swain County, she was a resident of Jackson County until moving to Florida three years ago. She was a daughter of the late Richard and Dora Long Bigmeat. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Lillard; one brother, Russell Bigmeat Sr.; and one sister, Sarah Elizabeth Lossiah. Surviving are her husband, Merle B. Watkins; one son, James Edward Lillard of Hinesville, Ga.; two daughters, Shermane Lossie of Cherokee and Dora Lillard of Maggie Valley; one brother, Robert Axe Long of Cherokee; two sisters, Rose Ann Davis of Cherokee and Winnie Lou Varella of San Bernardino, Calif.; one half-sister, Janie Brown of Cherokee; and eight grandchildren. Moody Funeral Home will announce arrangements.Ernest WoodringErnest Woodring, 68, of Freewater, Ore., formerly of Sylva, died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 15.The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at the home of his brother, Luther Woodring in Cullowhee. A memorial service and burial will be at a later date at the Shook Cemetery. A native of Jackson County, he had lived in Oregon for the past 20 years. He was a construction worker and a son of the late Jim and Catherine Brown Woodring. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth and Donald Woodring, both of Walla Walla, Wash.; two brothers, Luther Woodring of Cullowhee and Lawrence Woodring of Lexington; three sisters, Rachel Teaster of Cashiers, Nellie Williams of Pickens, S.C., and Emmalou Massingale of Greenville, S.C. Ethelyn HollowayEthelyn "Lyn" Holloway, a long-time resident of Cashiers, died at her home on Sunday, Oct. 15, after a long illness.A memorial service will be held at Village Green in Cashiers at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21. A native of Dallas, Texas, she was the daughter of Pascal Leroy and Lettie Eubanks Kennedy of Dallas, Texas. She was the wife of the late William Grace Holloway Jr. She and her husband lived in Delray Beach, Fla., and began vacationing in Cashiers in 1963. She was the first woman to sponsor a racing team on the NASCAR circuit, sponsoring Ned Jarrett's winning team. In 1971, she opened Lyn K. Holloway Antiques at the Crossroads in Cashiers. She was a participant in Cashiers Designers Showhouse, a member of the board of the Heffington Scholarship Fund, Carolina Mountain Bank, Village Green and was a frequent contributor to charitable causes in the area. Surviving are one brother, Frank Ferris Kennedy; two sons, Robert Stephen Rooth and Scott Kennedy Rooth; two stepdaughters, Elise Grace Holloway and Dita Holloway Emmett; and one stepson, William Grace Holloway III; and three granddaughters; In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, Lyn K.
