Donald CoryDonald Cory, 73, of Whittier's Barkers Creek community, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Rockdale Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Harry Vance and Randy Hyatt officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. A native of Kirklin, Ind., he moved in 1998 from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., to Jackson County. He was a service technician with Sears Roebuck for 30 years and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was the son of the late Fred and Allene Purcifull Cory. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy O. Cory, who died in July, and one sister. Surviving are one daughter, Donella Louise Graham of Nashua, N.H.; one son, Steven J. Cory of Whittier; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Jamie MathisJamie Mathis, 67, of Sylva, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at Mission-St. Joseph Health System in Asheville.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Promise Land Baptist Church in Tuckasegee. The Revs. Larry Bryson and Jim Ed Powell officiated. Burial was in Promise Land Cemetery. Pallbearers were Darren Mathis, Sidney Burrell, Mark Mathis, James Middleton, Lynn Cochran, Scott White and Jerry Cash. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was preceded in death by his parents, Anzel and Mary Mathis; one brother, Willie Oliver Mathis; and three sisters, Lue Ella Mathis, Oma Lee Nicholson and Betty Lee Burrell. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Rebecca Mathis; two daughters, Pamela Lark of Travelers Rest, S.C., and Sandra White of Simpsonville, S.C.; two sons, Alex Mathis of the home and Eddie Mathis of Cullowhee; three sisters, Dicie Norris and Jessie Mae Cochran of Sylva and Lois Harris of Castlerock, Wash.; five brothers, Junior Mathis of Toledo,Wash., L.H. Mathis, J.B. Mathis and Herman Mathis, all of Tuckasegee, and Willis Mathis of Longview, Wash.; and four grandchildren. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Carrie LambertCarrie Lambert of Cherokee died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. Grandsons served as pallbearers. The Revs. Merritt Youngdeer and Sibbald Lambert officiated. Burial was held at 2:30 p.m. in Mars Hill Cemetery in Mars Hill. She was a resident of Cherokee and was a recent resident of Autumn Care of Waynesville. She was a member of Cherokee Baptist Church. She was the wife of the late Rev. Leonard C. Lambert and daughter of the late Rev. Sibbald Smith and Erie Etta Queen Smith. She was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters. Surviving are one sister, Phoebe Sharp of Knoxville, Tenn.; two daughters, Betty Hawkins of Spruce Pine and Helen Harding of Cherokee; three sons, Leonard Lambert of Pittsburgh, and the Rev. Sibbald Lambert and Don Lambert , both of Spruce Pine; 17 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. Maude ChildersMaude Childers, 91, of Whittier, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, in Swain County Hospital.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home in Bryson City. Burial was in Union Hill Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, she was a daughter of the late Ed and Lula Lee Childers. She was a member of Whittier Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by five brothers, John, Bill, Dan, Bob and Walter, and one sister, Julia. Surviving is one sister, Stella Childers of Whittier. James SimondsJames Cline "Jim" Simonds, 48, of Mosaic Lane, Sylva, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at Mission-St. Joseph's Health System.A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes. Miriam Helton and the Rev. Carl Presnell will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. Frank ClawsonFrank Clawson, 74, of 235 Laurel Branch Road, Sylva, formerly of Asheville, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, in an Asheville hospital.Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today (Thursday) in the Patton Avenue Chapel of Groce Funeral Home. The Rev. Frank Cantrell will officiate. Entombment will be at Ashelawn Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. He was born in Yancey County and was a son of the late Granville and Sarah Green Clawson. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was the owner and operator of Northland Tree Service. He also worked as a carrier for the Asheville Citizen-Times circulation department for 20 years. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sandra Clawson. Surviving are his wife, Viola Jean Clawson; one stepson, Paul Cecil Capps Jr. of Clinton, Ind.; five sisters, Alice Jones of Asheville, Edna Smith and Ella Mae Moses of Morganton, Rose Miller of Foley, Ala., and Gertrude Grizzle of Kingsport, Tenn.; one brother, John Clawson of San Diego; and four grandchildren. Dusty WattyDusty Tyler Watty, 13, of Sylva, died due to a lifelong illness Friday, Oct. 11, 2002.Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Big Cove Pentecostal Church. The Revs. Ben Tapp and James "Bo" Parris officiated. Burial was at Wolfe Cemetery. He attended Cherokee Elementary School during his early childhood years and moved to Sylva and attended Cullowhee Valley School for both seventh and eighth grades. His was preceded in death by his grandparents, Marian Wolfe and Thurman Walkingstick and Johnny Watty and Edith Swayney. Surviving are his mother, Jessie Walkingstick; father, Michael Ray Watty; three brothers, Dakota Watty, John Teesateskie and Brandon Waldrop; one sister, Jessica Espinoza; and great grandmother, Rachel Watty.
