Ronald ArchRonald G. Arch, 62, of Taurus Lane, Cherokee, died unexpectedly Friday, Oct. 6, in Memorial Mission Hospital.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Cherokee. Father Ray Williams officiated. Burial was in Campground Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ray Don Letts, James Worley, James Ostergaard, Charles Saunooke, Ron Cowart and Bill Elder. A native and resident of Cherokee, he was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and a Knights of Columbus member. He was a self-employed business man since 1970 in Cherokee. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Dolores Arch; two sons, Stephen C. Arch and John Arch; one daughter, Susan Arch Dillard; mother-in-law, Eleanor Gremo; and two granddaughters, all of Cherokee. Franklin LudwigFranklin Ludwig, 77, of Locust Tree Lane, Whittier, died Saturday, Oct. 7, in Harris Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home.A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a resident of Swain County. He was a member of the Wesleyan Church and was a retired supervisor from the milk industry with Freeman Processing Co. He was a son of the late Franklin and Julia Weber Ludwig. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Emma Ward Ludwig; two brothers, Howard and Clarence Ludwig; one sister, Blanche Kierstead; and one grandson. Surviving are one daughter, the Rev. Eileen M. Erdosi of Coats; two sons, Robert "Bob" Ludwig of Cherokee and William "Bill" Ludwig of High Spire, Pa.; one sister, Delores Castagna of Trenton, N.J.; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Robert FranksRobert Lee Franks, 103, of Sylva, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, in Harris Regional Hospital.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at Zion Hill Baptist Church. The Revs. Keith Ashe and Wesley Hooper officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Leo Franks, Gary Ashe, Ed Jones, Dale Ridley, Merle Ridley and Gary Sutton. A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Gus Franks and Cindy Webb Franks. He was a logger and member of Zion Hill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louetta Mashburn Franks, who died in 1989. Surviving are three sons, Edgar Franks, Lester Franks and Raymond Franks, all of Sylva; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren. Selma WolfeSelma Conley Wolfe, 70, of Cherokee's Painttown community, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, at her residence.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Acquoni Baptist Chapel. The Rev. James "Bo" Parris officiated. Burial was in Sam Sherrill Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a former employee of Vassar and a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late John and Sally Sherrill Conley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Wolfe; one brother, Richard; and one sister, Lista Conley. Surviving are two sons, Charlie Wolfe and John Wolfe, both of Cherokee; two daughters, Freda Cisneros and Beth Wolfe, both of Cherokee; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Hazel BarclayHazel Barclay, 80, of Happy Nest Road in Sylva's Betty's Creek community, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a long illness.At her request, no services will be held. A native of Mt. Sterling, Ky., she was the daughter of Elza and Florence Woodson Woosley. At age 8, she moved with her parents to Illinois, where she grew up and was schooled. She lived in northern Illinois until 1993, when she and her husband moved to North Carolina. Surviving are her husband, Lowell Barclay; one son, Quinton P. Barclay of Rockford, Ill.; one grandson; and two great-grandchildren. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Elmar AdamsElmar H. Adams, 90, of Pressley Creek Road, Cullowhee, died Saturday, Oct. 7, in Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Steve Webb and Dillard Moore officiated. Burial was in Mt. Grove Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Bannister and Kizzie Wilkes Adams. She was preceded in death by two brothers; two sisters; and one granddaughter. Surviving are one daughter, Marlow Lewis of Sylva; one son, R.B. Adams of Cullowhee; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. U. Earl HenryUlysses Earl Henry, 81, of Greenville, Ky., died Wednesday, Sept. 27, in his home after a short illness.Graveside military services were held at noon on Thursday, Sept. 28, in Greenville's Evergreen Cemetery. A native of Jackson County, he moved to Kentucky with TVA in 1962, retiring from that organization in 1984. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in Sicily, Italy and North Africa. He took part in five battle campaigns before being wounded in 1945, for which he received the Purple Heart. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Greenville, Pond River Lodge 244, and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and a 50-year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Grace Henry; one son, Craig Henry of Greenville, Ky.; one daughter, Sallie McGlothlin of Owensboro, Ky.; two sisters, Fern Watson and Lois Alexander, both of Sylva; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Ollie JamesOllie Oxner James, 70, of Brookstone Nursing Home, formerly of Hunt Road, Lexington, died Thursday, Sept. 28, at the nursing home.A graveside service was held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at Forest Hill Memorial Park. The Rev. Doug McGee officiated. A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of Henry Howell Oxner and Mattie Sellers Owner. She was retired from Lexington Furniture Industries and was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard G. James, who died July 31. Surviving are two sons, Paul Farmer and Billy Gene Farmer, both of Lexington; one daughter, Marie Farmer Gullian of Detroit; and one grandchild. |
