Elizabeth ClaytonElizabeth Rogers Clayton, 82, of Juneapple Drive, Sylva, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Johnny Norris and Dan Stiles officiated. Burial was in Parris Cemetery. Grandsons and grandsons-in-law served as pallbearers. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a supervisor with Sylco Textile Corp., a member of Moses Creek Baptist Church and daughter of the late Thomas N. and Julie Robinson Rogers. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Marshall Clayton, who died in 1992; one son, Thomas Everett Clayton; two sisters, Dixie and Cumi; and three brothers, James, Ralph and Thomas, all of Gaston County. Surviving are four daughters, Clara Belle Cogdill, Nell Nations and Betty Clayton, all of Sylva, and Pat Parris of Dillsboro; one son, Bud Clayton of Sylva; one brother, Lewis Rogers of Dallas, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Louise StewartLouise Robinson Stewart, 88, of Cashiers, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, in Canton.Funeral services were held at noon Saturday, Oct. 5, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Johnny Norris officiated. Burial was in Pine Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. A native and former resident of both Pine Creek and Balsam communities of Jackson County, she was a member of Pine Creek Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Carl and Lake Alexander Robinson and wife of the late Roy Lee Stewart. She was preceded in death by one son, Roy Lee Stewart Jr.; one daughter, Joann Barfield; one brother, James Robinson; and three sisters, Lillian Moody, Hazel Clark and Gladys Crumbley. Surviving are two daughters, Dot Mathis of Balsam and Billie Whitson of Asheville; one son, Clarence "Bud" Stewart of Rosman; two brothers, Carl Robinson of Cullowhee and Cub Robinson of Cashiers; one sister, Emma Jean Shook of Greenville, S.C.; eleven grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. Lloyd GreenLloyd Cecil Green, 84, of Brookwood Drive, Landrum, S.C., died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon. Elder John Lassiter officiated. Burial was in Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbus. Born in Forney Creek, he was a son of the late Willis Ben Green and Dulcia Mashburn Green. He was a Jehovah's Witness in the Columbus congregation. He was preceded in death by one sister, Beatrice Bradley. Surviving are his wife, Janet Gibson Green; two daughters, Judith Eleam of Enterprise, Ala., and Vicki Karen Sommerville of Hendersonville; six sisters, Gladys Carroll and Lorena Carrigan, both of Gastonia, Louise Oaks of Laurel, Mont., Lessie Bruner of Roseburg, Ore., Bonnie Buchanan of Hoquiam, Wash., and Shirlee Skinner of Elma, Wash.; two brothers, Earl Green of Whittier and Ben Green of Gastonia; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Willa ScroggsWilla Mae Dills Scroggs, 89, of Sylva, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, after a period of declining health.Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Dills Cove Family Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Wayne Hill officiated. A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Allen Jonah and Cora Elizabeth Henson Dills and wife of the late Porter Russell Scroggs. She received a bachelor's degree from Western Carolina University and a master's from the University of Tennessee. She retired from Sylva Webster High School. She was active and held office in church, political and civic affairs. She sang in the church choir for more than 30 years. She was active in local, state and American Home Economics Associations. She was a member of teacher organizations and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a member of the American Home Economics Association and traveled with the first organized women's tour to Russia under the cultural exchange. Survivors include her cousin, Rose Hair of Sylva. Lyle CrispLyle Philip Crisp, 63, of Franklin, formerly of Bryson City, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Britthaven of Franklin following a period of declining health. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at Swain Memorial Park in Bryson City.Born Jan. 5, 1939, in Judson, he was the son of the late Paul Lee and Ruby G. Jones Crisp. He was a U.S. Naval Air Force veteran. He attended the University of Colorado and graduated from Western Carolina University with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. He taught high school business classes in Graham County and worked for the Social Security Administration in Buncombe County. Surviving are six sisters, Rachel Stevenson of Taylorsville, Earlene Spilak and Norma Myers, both of Rochester Hills, Mich., Frances Marshall of Morganton, Sue Strieff of Atlanta and Jane Hair of Sylva. Frances BatemanFrances Virginia Bateman, 83, of Sylva, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Christy officiated. A native of Alabama, she lived most of her adult life in Florida before moving to Sylva in 1994. She had been active in the Baptist church all her life and was a member of First Baptist Church of Sylva for the past eight years. She served as a Sunday school teacher for many years in Florida. Daughter of the late James Scott and Mattie Chambliss Brown, she worked as a lunchroom manager in the public school system in Miami and was a cook and baker. Surviving are two sons, James Donald Bateman of Jacksonville, Fla., and Floyd Ernest Bateman of Webster; one sister, Viana Johnson of Atmore, Ala.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. The Revs. Robert Blanton and Clemmey Queen officiated. Burial was in Love Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Vardie and Ida Dyer Sneed. She was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonia Lee Austin; one daughter, Martha Pauline Austin; and two grandsons. Surviving are one daughter, Marie Cope of Sylva; five sons, Roger Austin of Newport News, Va., Eugene "Babe" Austin, Clifford "Joe" Austin and Ricky Austin, all of Sylva, and Robert Austin of Salisbury; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

"Bill" Taylor, 50, of Cherokee's Big Cove community, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, in Cherokee Indian Hospital.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home in Bryson City. The Revs. James Cooper and Ray Kinsland officiated. Burial was in Taylor Family Cemetery. A native of Swain County, he was a son of Betty Wolfe Taylor and the late Richard William Taylor. He was an artist and member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints. He was a former chairman of the Cherokee Tribal Council. In addition to his mother, surviving are one daughter, Angela Taylor of Cherokee; three sons, Daniel, Paul and Richard "Mike" Taylor, all of Cherokee; three brothers, Ronald, John and Kenneth Taylor, all of Cherokee; and two grandchildren.

Burial was in Whittier's Hensley Cemetery. A native of Jackson County, she attended Sandy Plain Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Willis and Delci Mashburn Green. She was preceded in death by her husband, Avery A. Bradley, Sr.; one sister, Nannie Mae Green; one brother, Lloyd Green; and one daughter, Betty Ann Bradley. Surviving are four sons, Avery Alonzo Bradley Jr. and William Bradley, both of Gastonia, Edward Bradley of Columbia, S.C., and James Bradley of Washington; six sisters, Gladys Carroll, Lorena Carrigan, Bonnie Buchanan, Shirley Skinner, Lois Oakes and Lessie Burner; two brothers, Earl Green and Ben Green; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. A native of Jackson County, she was a lifelong member of Liberty Baptist Church, serving as superintendent of the Sunday school, the Senior Missionary Society and Liberty Baptist Gospel Choir. Daughter of the late Odell and Grace Dorsey Bryson, she was a member of the Jackson County Home Extension Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Mingus; one brother, S.J. Bryson; and one sister, Odessa Mebane. Surviving are one daughter, Ellerna Cannon of Sylva; three sons, Dana Bryson of Simpsonville, Richard "Tommy" Bryson of Greensboro and Jason Mingus of Asheville; five brothers, John Robert Bryson of Sylva, Farrell Bryson of Greensboro, David Bryson of Cleveland, Herbert "Bean" Bryson of Dayton, Ohio, and Richard Bryson of Greenville, S.C.; six sisters, Emma Lou Bryson, Minnie J.
