Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Posey Long

Posey J. Long, 84, of Long Branch Road, Cherokee, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, in a Cherokee health care facility.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Bethabara Baptist Church. The Revs. James "Bo" Parris and Mitchell Smiley officiated. Burial was in Long Family Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Josiah Long. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Snowbird and a wood craftsman.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Bessie Catolster Long, who died May 24, 2003.

Surviving are four sons, Wilbur George Long, Garfield Henry Long, Roger D. Long and John Long, all of Cherokee; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Whitworth

Ruth May Whitworth, 69, of Burlington, Wash., died Thursday, Oct. 2, at her home.

Graveside services were held at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 7, in Van Zandt Cemetery in Deming, Wash. Pastor Dave Browning officiated.

She was born May 1, 1934, in Sylva to Oudis C. and Lillie C. Shepard Harris and moved with her family to Sedro-Woolley, Wash., when she was 11.

She married James E. Whitworth on Dec. 3, 1965. She was a member of the Meat Cutter's Union of Washington and owned and operated Jim's Auto Repair with her husband.

She was proceeded in death by a son, Robert Buchanan; two brothers, Henry and Will Harris; and a sister, Eve.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Carolyn Buchanan Counts of Black Diamond, Wash.;
two sons, Hank Buchanan of Sylva and Doug Buchanan of Birdsview, Wash.; a sister, Margaret Harris of Sylva; a brother, Daniel Harris of Sedro-Woolley; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Martha Cucumber

Martha Shell Cucumber, 64, of Lizzie Cucumber Road, Cherokee, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003.

Funeral services were held at noon Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Piney Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. Roland Whitaker officiated. Interment was in Cucumber Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, she had worked in textiles and was the daughter of the late Boyd and Mary Lawsiah Shell.

Surviving are her husband, Johnny Cucumber; three sons, Henry, Robert and Keith Shell, all of Cherokee; a daughter, Marella Martinez of Waynesville; a brother, Boyd Henry of Cherokee; two sisters, Hazel Shell and Betty Toineeta, both of Cherokee; and three grandchildren.

Donald Fleming

Donald Loyd Fleming, 57, of Cullowhee's Wayehutta community, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Mission-St. Joseph's Health System in Asheville.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at New Life Foundation Church, 908 Cedar Lane Road, Greenville, S.C.

A native of Greenville, S.C., he had lived in Jackson County the past 17 years. Son of Sara Mae Weston Fleming Davis of Easley, S.C., and the late Marvin H. Fleming, he was proceeded in death by his wife, Lula Belle Houston Fleming; a twin brother, Randall Floyd Fleming, and two other brothers, Leroy Fleming and Marvin Fleming Jr.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are a sister, Rachel Ladd of Zephyerhills, Fla.; two brothers, Lamine Fleming of Greenville, S.C., and the Rev. Douglas Fleming of Zephyerhills.

John Grant

John Grant, 59, of Peppermill Lane, Sylva, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at his residence after an extended illness.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, in Addie Cemetery. The Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiated.

A native of Knox City, Texas, he had lived in Jackson County the past four years. He was a self-employed commercial painter, woodworker and veteran of the U.S. Navy.

A member of Marshall Drive Baptist Church in Texas, he was the son of the late Thven D. and Bonnie Marie Smith Grant.

Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Rita Sue Parris Grant; a daughter, Susan Messina of Maryland; a sister, Gloria Linthieum of Wichita Falls, Texas; and two grandsons.

Memorials may be made to WestCare Hospice, 132 Sylva Plaza, Sylva, N.C. 28779.

Prince Hawkins

Prince Albert Hawkins Jr., 64, of Riverbend Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at Mission-St. Joseph's Health System in Asheville.

No services are planned at this time.

A native of Petersburg, Va., he had lived the past 12 years in Jackson County. A painter, he was a son of the late Prince Albert Sr. and Elizabeth Marshall Hawkins.

Surviving are his wife of 13 years, Lydia Diane Walker Hawkins; two daughters, Dorothy Marie Hawkins and Melissa Hawkins, both of Petersburg; two sons, Thomas Hawkins of Clyde and Prince Albert Hawkins III of Petersburg; four brothers, John Edward Hawkins, Richard Hawkins, Jackie Raymond Hawkins and Clarance Hawkins, all of Petersburg; and four grandchildren.

Emily McCoy

Emily Conseen McCoy, 78, of Cherokee's Adams Creek community, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at her residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Bethabara Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Mitchell Smiley and Tom Harris officiated. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, she was a cook at the Qualla Boundary Head Start for several years and was a Foster Grandparent.

She was a daughter of the late James and Caroline Tonietta Conseen. She was proceeded in death by her husband, William Thomas McCoy, who died in 1985; a son, William Allen McCoy; three sisters; and three brothers.

Surviving are nine daughters, Bertha Marie Braddock of Adum, Ga., Nora Maxine Burgess, Frances McCoy, Peggy Oocumma, Agnes Bradley, Mildred McCoy, Mary McCoy, Tommie Ruth McCoy and Faye McCoy Cedillo, all of Cherokee; five sons, Richard James McCoy, Albert McCoy, Thomas J. McCoy, Larry Paul McCoy and Vernon Ray McCoy, all of Cherokee; two brothers, Adam Conseen of Staunton, Va., and Macadoo Driver of Cherokee; two foster children, Juanita and Carol Ann Bottchenbaugh; and one grandson.

Herbert Reagan

Herbert Lee Reagan, 92, of Camp Creek Road, Whittier, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at Tsali Care Center after a period of declining health.
