Newylon MathewsNewylon Gordon Mathews, 76, of Tenino, Wash., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, in Olympia, Wash.Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at Stricklin Funeral Home. Pastor James Escober will officiate. Interment will be in Grand Mound Cemetery in Rochester, Wash. A native of Jackson County, he was born Oct. 26, 1925, to Duff and Elma Mathis Mathews. He was a farmer and woodworker. A former member of Sols Creek Baptist Church, he was a member of Tenino Assembly of God Church at the time of his death. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorisella Mathews; and his former wife, Edith Irene Howard. Surviving are is wife of 28 years, Nadine Mosteller Mathews; a daughter, Linda Johnson of Centralia, Wash.; three brothers, Clinton Mathews of Centralia, Garrett Mathews of Elberton, Ga., and Grover Mathews of Talbott, Tenn.; three sisters, Dimoteen Howard of Rochester, Wash., Mazie Bentley of Westwood, Calif., and Lydia Mathis of Sylva; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Dovie JonesDovie Marie Jones, 77, of Franklin, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at her residence.Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Tommy Ashe officiated. Burial was in Bumgarner Cemetery. Pallbearers were Michael Price, Bill Price, Larry Herron, Jim Lequire, Timmy Cochran and Richard Cochran. A native of Swain County, she had been a resident of Macon County for the past 25 years. She was a retired home health worker and a member of Longview Baptist Church. She was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Etta Jenkins Smith. Surviving are a son, Harry B. Jones of Bryson City; two daughters, Mary Mashburn and Eva Thompson of Franklin; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Carol EnsleyCarol Odell Ensley, 70, of Cullowhee, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at Balsam Grove Baptist Church. The Revs. Keith Ashe and Robert Stiles officiated. Burial was in Balsam Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Deitz, Barry Wood, Kenneth Burrell, Richard Frady, Jim Cruzan and John Owen. He was born Oct. 2, 1931, in Jackson County. He retired from N.C. Department of Transportation as a mechanic. He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Dale Ensley; sister, Betty Sue Vickers; and two brothers, James Harold "Bobby" Ensley and Clifton Ensley. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Kathleen Wells Ensley; two sons, Michael Ensley and Jason Ensley, both of Cullowhee; four grandchildren; his parents, Ervin and Amanda Marie Parker Ensley of Cullowhee; two sisters, Mary Pearl Adams of Cullowhee and Glenda Gail Owen of Little Canada; and one brother, Blaine Ensley of Cullowhee. He was a son of the late Annie B. Sherrill and was preceded in death by one daughter, Rosa Lee Bird; and two half brothers, David Bird and John Sherrill. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Myrtle Bird; three sons, William Bird, Fredrick Bird and John Bird, all of Cherokee; three daughters, Bernadine Long, Penny Bird and Bernadette Armachain, all of Cherokee; a foster son, William Douglas Bird of Cherokee; five half sisters; 22 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. William FranksWilliam Ronnie Franks, 43, of Sylva's Pumpkintown community, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Victory Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Benny Bagwell and Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. A native of Gaston County, he lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a construction worker with Smoky Mountain Drilling and Blasting. He was preceded in death by his father, Clifton Franks, and a brother, Clayton E. Franks. Surviving are his mother, Priscilla Ridley Franks of Sylva; three daughters, Maria Hufman of Winston-Salem, Selina Franks of Sylva and Brittany Waldroup of Bryson City; one sister, Elizabeth Ann Huskey of Sylva; and three brothers, Terry Joe Franks, Randy Lewis Franks and Russell Franks, all of Sylva. A native of Swain County and lifelong resident of Big Cove community, she attended Big Cove Baptist Church and was a 2002 graduate of Cherokee High School. Surviving are her parents, Jesse James and Frances Davis Welch of the home; and a brother, Jess Welch Jr. of Cherokee. Gladys BrysonGladys Bryson, 75, of Balsam, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at her residence. Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers were Junior Gentry, Jerry Hyatt and Arthur Stamey.She was born June 10, 1927, in Haywood County to Jack and Lucy Cagle Rathbone. She was employed with Autumn Care and was a Jackson County resident for 50 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Bryson Jr.; son, Mike Bryson; brother, Floyd Rathbone; and sister, Georgia Buchanan. Surviving are her son, Ronnie Bryson of Bonifay, Fla.; two daughters, Lynda Hill and Peggy Buchanan, both of Waynesville; two sisters, Hazel Causey of Cincinnati and Naomi Ashworth of Danville, Va.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Richard ChesterRichard Thomas Chester, 48, of Webster Road, Webster, and Seminole, Fla., died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Harry Vance officiated. Pallbearers were Jerry Cooper, Mike Cooper, Steve Coward, Gary Nicholson, Tony Nicholson and Jim Watkins. A native of Augusta, Ga., he was a lab technician for Florida Testing and a member of Seminole First Baptist Church. Surviving are his parents, Lawrence Chester of Webster and Elizabeth Chester of Seminole; a son, Jesse Chester of Seminole; and a brother, Robert Chester of Seminole, and the Caney Fork community. Bruce StilesBruce Stiles, 66, of Sylva's Dicks Creek community, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at his residence after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Dicks Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Ricky Conner, Charles Carnes and Frank Brooks officiated. Burial was in Dicks Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Walter Rogers, Carroll Ensley, L.G. Painter, Pryde Farmer, Jeff Gunter and Dale Nations. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from Western Carolina University with 25 years of service in the electrical department. He was a licensed electrician; a member of Dicks Creek Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher; an Army veteran; and a member of the Georgia Wildlife Hunting Club. He was instrumental in the maintenance and care of Dicks Creek Cemetery for many years. He was a son of Mary Gunter Stiles of Whittier and the late Grady Monroe Stiles. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 45 years, Kathleen Cabe Stiles; two daughters Gail Clawson and Kay Conner, both of Whittier; one son, Olin Stiles of Whittier; three sisters, Faye West and Mary Ella Smith, both of Buford, Ga., and Frances Foland of St. Augustine, Fla.; one brother, Vaughn Stiles of Commerce, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Alda Householder; and three sisters, Billie Marshall, Juanita Miller and Sue Webb. Surviving are her husband, Hal E. Wilson; three sons, Hal E. Wilson Jr. of Houston, James Wilson of Durham and Timothy Wilson of Knoxville, Tenn.; and four grandchildren. Jones of Whittier; a brother, Eugene Jones of Whittier; five sisters, Sue Jones and Wanda Hall, both of Whittier, Peggy Jones of Church Hill, Tenn., Judy Jones of Cornelia, Ga., and Ruth Korr of Darrington; and five grandchildren.
