The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Betty McClure

Betty Parris McClure, 76, of Sylva's Addie community, died on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, in Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Abe Brooks, Gerald Morris and Shane Danner officiated. Burial was in Addie Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jared Brooks, Ryan Brooks, Robert Cruzan, Joe McClure, Charles Ashe and Michael Floyd.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she retired as snack bar manager of Eastgate Pharmacy.

Daughter of the late Edgar and Emma Painter Parris, she was a member of the Buff Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Charles B. McClure; two daughters, Rita Cruzan of Sylva and Cindy Brooks of Whittier; one son, Ricky McClure of Sylva; one sister, Catherine Miltenberger of Fallan, Nev.; and four grandchildren.

Lucy George

Lucy B. George, 82, of Cherokee, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at Cherokee Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Rock Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Ron Terebo officiated. Burial followed at Jack Taylor Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, she was a basketmaker. She attended Rock Hill Baptist Church and was the daughter of the late Chet Ben and Ollie Queen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ammons George; and two sons, Edward Johnson George and Henry George.

Surviving are one son, James George of Whittier; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Martha Roper

Martha Sue Wood Roper, 74, of Whittier, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, in a Jackson County health care facility.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home, Bryson City. The Revs. Ned Pressley and Alfred Pitts officiated. Burial was in Union Hill Cemetery.

A native of Whittier, she was the daughter of the late Felix and Bonnie Styles Wood.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Roper; one daughter, Betty Sue Propst; one son, Gary Propst; and one brother, Burlin Wood.

Surviving are a brother, Richard Wood of Whittier; one sister, Louise Nations of Hoquiam, Wash.; and one grandson.

Ralph Stanberry

Ralph Miller Stanberry Sr., 79, of Bryson City's Maple Springs community, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, in Harris Regional Hospital.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Almond Baptist Mission, of which he was a member. The Rev. Robert Tucker officiated.

A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late W. Turner and Mayme Miller Stanberry. He was a retired employee of the N.C. Department of Transportation with 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served in World War II, where he served with the 8th Air Force in England.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Edwin T. Stanberry.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Hilda Lindsay Stanberry; four sons, Ralph Miller Stanberry Jr. of Greenville, S.C., Philip Lindsay Stanberry of Raleigh, Thomas William Stanberry of Aiken, S.C., and Robert Lewis Stanberry of Sylva; two brothers, William Stanberry of Boone and Charles Stanberry of Asheville; one sister, Jean Ladd of Graniteville, S.C.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

James Hall

James Henry Hall, 81, of Glade Drive, Dillsboro, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Roy Burnette officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from Dayco Inc. and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was the son of the late Tolvin and Della Dillard Hall.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Leatherwood Hall, who died in1995; and one sister, Mary Catherine Pennington.

Surviving are one daughter, Sandra Wykle of Dillsboro; four sons, James Hall Jr. of Sylva, Harold Hall of Waynesville and Guy Hall and John Hall, both of Dillsboro; three sisters, Alice Mae Lyons of Winston-Salem, Lucille Jones of Mooresville and Lura Leigh Chaney of Oklahoma City; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Higdon

Dorothy B. Higdon, 88, of Cullowhee, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Fairview Memorial Gardens. The Revs. Dr. Jeffery Vickery and Tonya Vickery officiated.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she graduated from Western Carolina University and was retired from the Jackson County school system after having taught school for 38 years. She was a member of Cullowhee Baptist Church and was the daughter of the late Logan A. and Susie Brown Buchanan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, L.H. Higdon.

Surviving are two sons, Lyndon C. Higdon of Cullowhee and Samuel L. Higdon of Hickory; one brother, Paul Buchanan of Sylva; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Frances Norton

Frances Elizabeth Norton, 83, of Wike Cemetery Road, Cullowhee, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Wayne Hill will officiate. Burial will be in Cullowhee Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home prior to the services.

A native of Swain County, she was a daughter of the late William O. and Bess Scott Soderquist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Elliott Norton; and one daughter, Joyce Norton, who died Saturday, Sept. 27.

Surviving are one son, Tommy E. Norton of Cullowhee; one sister, Anne Robertson of Titusville, Fla.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Joyce Norton

Joyce Adele Norton, 61, of Wike Cemetery Road, Cullowhee, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at her residence after a lifetime battle with Downs Syndrome.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Wayne Hill will officiate. Burial will be in Cullowhee Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Elliott and Frances Elizabeth Soderquist Norton.

Surviving is one brother, Tommy E. Norton of Cullowhee.

Maureen Magee

Maureen Ashe Magee, 84, of Bourbonnais, Ill., formerly of Bryson City, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee, Ill.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Bryson City First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ben Bushyhead officiated. Burial was in Waynesville's Green Hill Cemetery.

She was born in Whittier on July 6, 1919, to Scott Allen Ashe and Lillie Belle Miller Ashe. She graduated from Swain County High School and Draughan's Business College in Knoxville.

She previously was employed as a secretary for the superintendent of schools in Swain County for 26 years.

She was retired from the U.S. Army Arsenal in Rock Island, Ill., where she had been a weapons manual editor.

After retiring, she had been a resident of Bourbonnais since 2000. She was a life-long volunteer and a member of many organizations. She belonged to the Order of Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution and several clubs in her hometown. She made more than 500 knitted hats, which she donated to various charities.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; one brother; and one grandson.

Surviving are one daughter, Maureen Antognoli of Bourbonnais, Ill.; one sister, Opal Davis of Evans, Ga.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Swain County High School Class of 1965 Scholarship Fund, c/o Russell Winchester, Bryson City, N.C. 28713.

Jack Whisnant

Jack S. Whisnant, 61, of Loop Road, Whittier, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill after an extended illness.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Cherokee. The Rev. Heber Peacock will officiate.

Born Feb. 4, 1942, in Rutherfordton, he graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a master's degree in geology in 1975. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church of Cherokee.

During his career he held positions of chief geologist for Lithium Corp. of Bessemer City and operations manager and vice president of development for Haile Gold Mine in Kershaw, S.C.

After moving to Jackson County, he was a consultant to upper and general management in the mining, mineral processing, chemical and petroleum industries. For the past four years he operated Whisnant's Custom Sawing at Gateway.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Valentine Whisnant; two daughters, Phoebe Whisnant of Chicago and Bonnie Whisnant of Whittier; one son, George Whisnant of Whittier; and one brother, George Lemuel Whisnant of Rutherfordton.

Willa Church

Willa Elise Jorgensen Church, 32, of 114 Fairview Road, Marion, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at Sharon Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.

A second memorial service will be held at Jubilee Community on Wall Street in Asheville Sunday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m.

James Jones

James E. Jones, 84, of Gainesboro, Tenn., died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Anderson Funeral Home. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Goodlettsville. Brother Damon Corley officiated.

A former resident of Jackson County, he was born Oct. 10, 1918, to the late James B. and Flara Greenarch Jones. He was a retired Navy Seabee, a farmer and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elois Hooper Jones, who died in 1981; four brothers, Lovell, John, Luther Lee and Albert Jones; four sisters, Margaret Vetetoe, Wilmirth Reed, Lelloween Bryant and Rosie Carver; and one daughter, Genice Jones.

Surviving are two sons, James R. Jones of Sylva and Brenda Jones of Indian Creek, Tenn.; two daughters, Joy Puckett of Cookeville and Freda Whitaker of Gainesboro, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Edna Dillard

Edna Parris Dillard, 82, of Aiken, S.C., died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Southlawn Cemetery. The Revs. Herbert Gladden and Toby Rowell will officiate.

Daughter of the late Zeb and Nettie Parris, she was born in Sylva's Addie community, moving to Montmorenci in 1952, and then to Aiken in 1973. She worked at the Montmorenci Post Office, Roses for 14 years and volunteered as a Pink Lady for 42 years at Aiken Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Montmorenci First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Lloyd B. Dillard; one son, Kenneth Dillard of Aiken; two daughters, Lorrene Gabriel and Sue Eubanks, both of Montmorenci, S.C., one brother, Kenneth Parris of Chico, Calif.; two sisters, Hazel Shular of Sylva and Joanne Gordon of Hendersonville; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mary Dunn

Mary L. Dunn, 91, of Sylva, originally from Indianapolis, Ind., died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at Ensley's Adult Care Center.

Services were arranged by Legacy at Memorial Park in Indianapolis.

Surviving are one son, Chuck Sullivan of Whittier; and four grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

Robert Bradley

Robert "Carl" Bradley, 88, of Brickyard Road, Asheville, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, in Mission-St. Joseph's Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in Old Savannah Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a retired construction worker and the son of the late Lewis Coleman and Martha Hall Bradley. He was a World War II Army veteran and was a member of the Old Savannah Baptist Church. A native of Jackson County, he had lived in Asheville for the last 18 years.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, William Gerson Bradley, J.D. Bradley and Allen Bradley; and one sister, Jessie Bradley Calhoun.

Surviving is a sister, Laura Mae Buchanan of Sylva.

Stella Shuler

Stella Parker Shuler, 76, of Cullowhee's Caney Fork community, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at the Brian Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Balsam Grove Baptist Church. The Revs. Clifford Parker and Steve Webb will officiate. Burial will be in Balsam Grove Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she worked the press at Highland Laundry. She was the daughter of the late Perry and Ola Alexander Parker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Shuler, who died in 2002; two brothers; four sisters; and two grandchildren.

Surviving are three daughters, Waynetica Reece of Cullowhee and Frances Frizzell and Linda Hoxit, both of Sylva; three sons, Kenny Shuler, Ronnie Shuler and Donnie Shuler, all of Sylva; one brother, Frank Parker of Washington; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.
