Fred Coggins

Fred Ray Coggins, 70, of Cullowhee Mountain Road, Cullowhee, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. David Burch and Billy Stiles officiated. Burial was in Double Springs Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a member of Speedwell Baptist Church. He was a retired carpenter and son of the late Oscar and Alice Owens Coggins.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Dolly Brendle, Sally Coggins and Marie Coggins; and four brothers, Leonard, Dewey, Raymond and Wesley Coggins.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Edna Young Coggins of the home; two sons, Dennis and Michael Coggins, also of the home; and two sisters, Daisy Williamson of High Point and Myrtle Ashe of Shelby.


Annie Powell

Annie Ruth Cook Powell, 66, of 801 Castlewood Drive, Gastonia, died Monday, Oct. 11, in Gaston Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at Bratton Funeral Home in York, S.C. Burial was in Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.

A native of Bryson City, she was a homemaker and daughter of the late James Marcus Cook and Eva Mae Jenkins. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her husband, Robla Powell of the home; four sons, James Thomas Cook of Kings Mountain, Johnny Marvin Cook and Richard Lee "Bo" Powell, both of Gastonia, and Robert Bryan Powell of Lincolnton; three daughters, Carla Marie Jolly and Suzanne Powell McFalls, both of Clover, S.C., and Donna Carol Willis of Waco; five brothers, Charlie Cook of Mountain Home, Idaho, James L. Cook of Pierce, Idaho, Carl Cook of Orfino, Idaho, Sherrill Cook of Gadsden, Ala., and Billy Ray Cook of Sylva; one sister, Eilene Cash of Gadsden; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.


J. C. Long

J.C. Long, 81, of 612 Wylie Street, Lancaster, S.C., died Monday, Oct. 11, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at First United Methodist Church in Lancaster, S.C. The Rev. Needham Williamson officiated. Burial was in Lancaster Memorial Park with military honors.

A native of Arden, he was a 1937 graduate of Sylva High School. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lancaster, where he was a member of the men's Bible class.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the Submarine Corp as a Torpedoman's Mate First Class during World War II and later serving and retiring from the U.S. Navy Reserves. He was a brakeman and had retired from the L and C Railway Co. He served as an auxiliary deputy sheriff for the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office and had retired after more than 20 years of service.

He had been a leader in the Boy Scouts of America for more than 50 years and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Stafford Graham American Legion Post 31 and volunteered as a reader at Brooklyn Springs Elementary School.

Surviving are his wife, Miriam Shannon Long; two sons, John Long of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and William Long of Lancaster; two brothers, Cecil Howard Long of Amhurst, Va., and Neil Davis Long of Vallejo, Calif.; one sister, Harriett Louise Bannon of Hickory; and three grandchildren.

Faye Waldroop

Faye B. Waldroop, 80, of Shook Cove Road, Tuckasegee, died Sunday, Oct. 17, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, in Carson Cemetery in Franklin. The Rev. Dan Stiles officiated.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Cansy Callie Browning Barnes. She was a member of Loves Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, John L. Waldroop; two sons, Larry Lyle Waldroop of Cumming, Ga., and Edward Lane Waldroop of Maryville, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

Memorials may be made to one's favorite charity.


Robert Whaley

Robert A. Whaley died at his home in Chapel Hill on Wednesday, Oct. 13.

A neuroradiologist, he worked at UNC Hospitals since 1978. He retired as a Colonel from the U.S. Army Medical Corps, having served from 1958 to 1978.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Ann Donnelly Whaley of the home; one son, Christopher Whaley of Atlanta; one daughter, Kelley Ann Whaley of Lake Junaluska; one sister; and one granddaughter.

William Miller

William "Bill" F. Miller, of Whittier, died Thursday, Oct. 14.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Frank Wagshaw officiated. Military graveside services were held in Union Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mark Rogers, Eddie Cole, William N. Gass, Rex Gass, Jeffrey P. Shealy, Dexter Mason, Matthew Rogers and Travis Sizemore.

A native of Butterfield, Minn., he attended the Living Waters Lutheran Church in Cherokee. He was retired from the U.S. Army after 24 years and the National Park Service after 15 years. He was a son of the late William Henry and Agnes Miller.

He was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters.

Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Connie C. Miller; and one daughter, Jessica Miller of the home


Paul Trasak

Paul M. Trasak, 43, of Sylva's Greens Creek community, died Thursday, Oct. 7, at Harris Regional Hospital.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. Father James Cahill officiated.

A native of New Jersey, he was employed with Harrah's Cherokee Casino as the guest safety officer. He was a son of the late Daniel Trasak.

Surviving are his mother, Rose Phillips Trasak of Sylva; one brother, Daniel Trasak of Sylva; and two sisters, Rosemarie Giordano of Skillman, N.J., and Kathryn Owle of Cherokee.


Rufus Hill

Rufus Scott Hill, 84, of Tsali Care Center, Cherokee, died Saturday, Oct. 16, at the center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Big Cove Baptist Church. The Revs. Red Bradley and Bo Parris officiated. Burial was in the Hill Family Cemetery.

A native of Murphy, he had lived in Swain County for most of his life. He was a retired railroad worker and a son of the late Levi and Laura Jane Wolfe Hill.

Surviving is one brother, Jake Hill of Cherokee.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Geneva Schreiber

Geneva Turpin Schreiber, 85, of Lewis Cove Road, Whittier, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Greg Hershberger and Ronnie Gene Turpin officiated. Burial was in Thomas Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, she was a retired school teacher and a member of Whittier United Methodist Church. She was a daughter of the late Homer and Birdie Hampton Turpin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Schreiber, who died in January; one brother, Howard Turpin; and one sister, Ruth Grissom.

Surviving are one daughter, Olivia S. McDaniel of Gastonia; one son, Eric C. Schreiber of the home; two brothers, Wade Turpin of Lakeland, Fla., and Gene Turpin of Decatur, Tenn.; and four granddaughters.

Brandon Stiwinter

Brandon Keith Stiwinter, 21, of Franklin Farm Road, Franklin, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, in an Asheville hospital.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Holly Springs Baptist Church. The Revs. Eddie Trull and Lewis Smith officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Jonathon Makinson, Jason Pangle, Todd Ryon, Kirby Harwell, Travis Higdon, David Painter, David Kahkonen and Scott Maddox. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Holly Springs Baptist Church softball team and youth group and members of First Methodist Church youth group. A lifelong resident of Macon County, he was a son of Lavaughn and Karen Miller Stiwinter. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1997 where he played football and baseball. He was a student at Western Carolina University and a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Roy Stiwinter.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his paternal grandmother, Bessie Crawford of Franklin; maternal grandparents, Don and Sally Miller of Largo, Fla.; and one brother, Tony Stiwinter of Pickens, S.C.
