Carrie B. Witherbee

Carrie Witherbee

Carrie B. Witherbee, 85, of Bryson City, died Saturday, Sept. 23, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Terry Taylor officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Kenny McClean, Sam Cable, William Wilson, Rick Buchanan, Terry and Gene Settlemyre.

Daughter of the late Roy and Lizzie Settlemyre, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Witherbee; three brothers; and two sisters.

Surviving are two sons, William Wilson of Bryson City and Michael Bradley of Waldorf, Md.; three daughters, Linda Cable and Sue Mann of Bryson City and Mary Lunsford of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one brother, James Settlemyre of Wilmot; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Frances Smith

Frances Smith

Frances Phelps Smith, 76, a native of Lexington, Miss., died Sunday, Sept. 24, at Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva, after an extended illness.

A memorial service was held at noon Wednesday, Sept. 27, at St. David's Episcopal Church on the Western Carolina University campus in Cullowhee. Burial will be Friday, Sept. 30, in Lexington, Miss.

She was a daughter of the late George Truett and Anne Gibson Phelps. She attended the University of Mississippi, graduating with a degree in early childhood education. She was a member and president of her chapter of Phi Mu sorority.

She was employed as a stewardess with Delta Airlines and was a member of the Delta Clipped Wings Club. After her children were grown, she returned to work in the travel industry for 11 years.

A longtime resident of Charleston, S.C., she moved to Lake Junaluska in 1992. She was a member of the Junaluskans, the Tuscola Garden Club, the Home Extension Club, and the Lunch Bunch.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sarah Ann Smith; and her husband, Dr. Eugene Yates Smith Jr.

Surviving are one son, Eugene Y. Smith III, of Sylva; three daughters, Susan S. Stilwell of Canton, Dr. Martha Gibson Smith of Charlotte, and Anne S. DeBauche of Santa Fe, N.M.; and eight grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the York Place, 234 Kings Mountain St., York, S.C. 29745.


Rush Sumner

Rush Sumner, 84, of Sleepy Lane, Sylva, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center, following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 23, at Calvary Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Dennis Burrell and John Reid officiated. Burial was in New Savannah Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were David and Chris Bowers, Tommy and Dustin Sumner, Radford Guffey and Alan Zinsmeyer. Honorary pallbearers were Leo Cowan and Fred Cabe.

A native of Cherokee County, he lived most of his life in Jackson County. He retired from the physical plant at Western Carolina University. He was a son of the late Marcus Avery "Crawford² and Nannie Tatham Sumner and husband of Margie Guffey Sumner, who died in 1989.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda "Cindy² Smith of San Antonio, Texas, and Sheila Horne of Stephenville, Texas; two sons, Marcus "Mark² Sumner of Sylva and Harry Sumner of Hillsborough; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to one's favorite charity.

Memorial for Florence Rhinehart

A public concert of Vineyardmusicke will be presented Tuesday, Oct. 3, in memory of Florence Wesley Stephens Rhinehart, who died July 30.

She was the wife of Joe P. Rhinehart of Webster and Georgetown, Ky.

The concert will be held at 7 p.m. at the Webster United Methodist Church and will feature baroque music. In addition, Susie Beckwith will play several hymns on the dulcimer, including "Morning Has Broken." A reception at Studio House, 1346 Webster Road, will follow the concert.

In addition, a similar concert will be held Thursday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Georgetown, Ky.



Mary Frady

Mary Aliyah Frady, infant daughter of Trinity David and Lisa Maney Frady of Cherokee's Big Cove community, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, in Haywood Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in Rock Springs Baptist Church. The Rev. Bobby Watts officiated. Burial was in Big Cove at the family cemetery.

Surviving, in addition to the parents, are the maternal grandparents, Harley and Eloise Maney of Cherokee; paternal grandmother, Daphene Gibson of Bryson City; maternal great-grandmother, Maggie Maney of Cherokee; and paternal great-grandparents, Mary Green of Bryson City and Joe Nations of Alto, Ga.

Etta Ashe

Etta Ashe, 90, of Racking Cove Road, Sylva, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, in Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Earl Holden officiated. Burial was in Lower Crawford Cemetery. Pallbearers were Johnny Gentry, Joe Gentry, Steve Buchanan, Juan Edwards, Wayne Edwards and James Luker.

A native of Macon County, she lived most of her life in Jackson County. She was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace G. Ashe, who died in 1981; one daughter, Juanita Ashe; one son, Grady Ashe; and two grandchildren.

Surviving are two daughters, Cora Smith of Hampton, Va., and Dot Penninger of Sylva; one son, Don Ashe of Cullowhee; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Doris Dotson

Doris McKinney Dotson, 78, of Salem, S.C., died Thursday, Sept. 21, at Skyland Care Center in Sylva.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pastor Ben Wheeler officiated.

A native of Graham, Fla., she was a former resident of Archer, Fla., and had been a resident of Salem, S.C., for the past 16 years. She was the daughter of the late Ray and Estie Sparks McKinney.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John "Jack" Dotson Sr.; one daughter, Cindy Dotson; and one brother, Eugene McKinney.

Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Meeks of Sylva; three sons, Gene Dotson of Apex, John Dotson of Salem, S.C., and Michael Dotson of South Carolina; one sister, Mary Blitch of Archer, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mary Buchanan

Mary Edna Buchanan, 88, of Sylva's East Fork community, died Monday, Sept. 25, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Deitz Memorial Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Robert Blanton will officiate. Burial will be in East Fork Cemetery. Pallbearers will be James Roper, Carroll Buchanan, Davis Buchanan, Gordon Buchanan, Doug Buchanan and Mark Hawk.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was an avid gardener. She was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Ida Deitz Buchanan and wife of Clinton Buchanan, who died in 1981.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Roper and Ruby Cabe; and two brothers, Burke Buchanan and John Buchanan.

Surviving are one son, James C. Buchanan of the home; two sisters, Mae Cowan and Virginia Hawk, both of Sylva; and two brothers, W.D. "Bill" Buchanan of Sylva and S.M. "Morgan" Buchanan of Springville, Tenn.

The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.



Reuben Justice

Reuben J. Justice of Mineral Springs Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home will announce arrangements.
