The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to readers.

When possible, obituaries should be sent to the Herald from the funeral home. Information received will be placed in our standard obituary format.

We publish names of all of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Ruth Bradley

Virginia Ruth Cabe Bradley, 84, of Dillsboro, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Old Savannah Baptist Church. The Revs. Clifford Parker, Eddie Stillwell and David Souderes officiated. Burial was at Old Savannah Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mark Bradley, Pete Bradley, John Bradley, Marty Phillips, Robert Rhodes and Isaac Middleton.

Born Oct. 13, 1917, in Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Thorton B. Cabe Sr. and Annie Reed Cabe. She was a granddaughter of the late Nathan and Mary Ann Cabe and John and Callie Reed. She was the widow of Walter Bradley, to whom she was married for 51 1/2 years. She was co-owner of Bradley Packing Co.

She was a member of Old Savannah Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday school teacher, member of Old Savannah WMU, Vacation Bible School director and teacher. She also sang in the choir. She was president of the Jackson County Home Extension Club and was a Gray Lady at Harris Regional Hospital.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Catherine Cabe.

Surviving are two sons, Ray Bradley and Dowdy Bradley, both of Sylva; one daughter, Joyce Ruth Stewart of Franklin; two sisters, Irene Fisher and Gladys Clark, both of Sylva; one brother, Thorton Cabe of Winder, Ga.; and nine grandchildren.

Annie Buchanan

Annie Glenn Buchanan, 93, of Cullowhee, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, in Buncombe County after a period of declining health.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, at Cullowhee United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Frank L. Padgett officiated.

A native and former resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Fannie Mae Coward Buchanan.

Annie Gunter

Annie McFalls Gunter, 88, of Cullowhee, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at Mission-St. Joseph Health Systems after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at Moses Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Earl Holden and Dillard Moore officiated. Burial was in Upper Stephens Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, she was a member of Moses Creek Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Art and Tiny Berry McFalls and widow of Sam Gunter, who died in 1988.

Surviving are one stepson, Bob Gunter of Andrews; and one stepdaughter, Jeanett Huntley of Forest City.

Garry Wike

Garry Dale Wike, 45, of Charlotte, died Sept. 17, 2002, at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at Lake Norman Funeral Chapel in Huntersville. Burial was in Wike Cemetery in Cullowhee.

He was born in Charlotte on May 25, 1957, the son of Ruth and Lee Wike. He graduated from West Mecklenburg High School in 1975, then served six years in the U.S. Navy. He spent much of his duty in San Diego, Calif., and Osaka, Japan, as an electronics technician earning the Navy Achievement Medal.

Since his discharge, he was primarily self-employed as a masonry contractor. Most recently, he was site coordinator for Thomas VonCannon of Charlotte.

Surviving are his parents, Ruth and Lee Wike of Charlotte; two sisters, Gina Leonard of Greenboro and Gwen Hopkins of Greenville, S.C.; and one brother, Greg Wike of Charlotte.

Thomas Cannon II

Dr. Thomas "Tommy" Franklin Cannon II of Tamarac, Fla., died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, in Tamarac.

A memorial service will be held in Raleigh at a later date.

A native of Canton, he was a son of the late Lloyd James and Mary Field Cannon. Before retirement he was a professor of horticulture at N.C. State University and an Extension agent in Jackson County.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Warren Cannon; and one brother, L.J. Cannon Jr.

Surviving are one daughter, Mary Ellen Guthrie; one son, Thomas F. Cannon III, both of Raleigh; and three sisters, Mary Louise Cowart of Canton, Doris Hughes of Montreal, Canada, and Sarah Harwell of Barnardsville.



Else Dillard

Else Dillard, 81, of Dillardtown Road, Sylva, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at his residence after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at East Sylva Baptist Church, of which he was a longtime member. The Revs. Charles Dean and Harry Vance officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Raymond Dillard, Bill Parker, Tommy Allen, Brian Wellmon, Stan McMahan and Gene McConnell. Honorary pallbearers were Tommy Fisher, Bud Medford, Dennis Ensley, Furman Raby, Phillip Dillard, Gene Gregory, Bud Plemmons, Miles Calhoun, Ernest Jamison Jr., Doug Moses, Roy Dillard and Ben Dillard.

A native of Jackson County, he lived in Dillardtown community all his life. He retired from Mead Corp.'s maintenance department after 34 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II where he served on the U.S. Sub Chaser 1267 Pacific Fleet.

He was a son of the late Frank and Nora Pressley Dillard. He was preceded in death by one sister, Emma Lou Moss; and one grandson.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Winnie Beasley Dillard; two sons, Guy Dillard and Terry Dillard, both of Sylva; one brother, Harry Dillard of Sylva; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice, 132 Sylva Plaza, Sylva, N.C. 28779.
