Artemio Calpini
Artemio "Art" Joseph Calpini, 83, of Savannah Drive, Sylva,
died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a
brief illness.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Melton-Riddle Funeral
Home Chapel. The Rev. Ron Allen officiated.
Born Oct. 20, 1920, in Pompton Lake, N.Y., he was the last of 10 children
born to Adolph and Maria Sierra Calpini.
He was an animation artist for Fleiser Studios in New York in 1940,
working with Popeye, Betty Boop and Gulliver's Travels. He was a photo
engraver for the Miami Herald newspaper while his children were young.
In his midlife, he went back to school and became an optician.
While raising his children, he lived in Miami. Around 1980 he moved
to Statesville and worked for Cable Television, selling cable until
1999, when he retired and moved to Sylva.
He served in the U.S. Army under Dwight Eisenhour.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Catherine G. Martin,
who died in November 2002.
Surviving are one son, John Robert Calpini of Tallahassee, Fla.; two
daughters, Eileen Marie Calvert and Linda Gail Calpini, both of Sylva;
four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Bill Franks
Bill Franks, 54, of Blueberry Lane, Sylva, died unexpectedly Wednesday,
Sept. 17, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Zion Hill
Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Eddie Stillwell
and Steve Webb officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers
were Michael Jones, Phillip Biddix, Blain Franks, Rick Standingdeer,
Will Plummer, Calvin Franks and Charlie Settlemyer.
He was a native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life.
He worked at Wal-Mart in maintenance and was a son of the late Cleo
and Gracie Wells Franks.
He was preceded in death by an infant son and one brother, James Paul
Franks.
Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Arlene Cogdill Franks; one daughter,
Cynthia Golden of Tuckasegee; one son, Billy Franks of Sylva; four sisters,
Cleatus Holloway of Dillsboro and Velma Longaria, Glenda Green and Nancy
Hopkins, all of Sylva; two brothers, Monroe Franks of Cullowhee and
Gene Franks of Seneca, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

Evelyn Kelvington
Evelyn Mefford Kelvington, 91, of Hooper Street, Sylva, died Wednesday,
Sept. 17, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining
health.
Private services were held Saturday, Sept. 20. Burial was in Florida
National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.
A native of Vandalia, Ill., she moved to Jackson County in 1991. She
was the last surviving child of the late John and Mary Parkinson Mefford.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Benny Keylor, who
died in 1940, and her husband, William H. Kelvington, who died in 1989;
and one son, Richard A. Keylor.
Surviving are her daughter, Darleen K. Wallace of Sylva; six grandchildren;
and 13 great-grandchildren.
Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Verna Crawford
Verna Gentry Crawford, 75, of 22 Woodfin Creek Road, Balsam, died Saturday,
Sept. 20, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at Mt. Pleasant
Baptist Church in Willetts community.
The Rev. Frank Brooks officiated. Burial was at G.C. Crawford Family
Cemetery in Balsam. Pallbearers were Carroll Gentry, Carroll Gentry
Jr., Roger Gentry, Curtis Gentry, Cecil Crawford and David McDaniel.
She had lived in Jackson County most of her life. Daughter of the late
Mark and Nellie Woods Gentry, she was a member of Balsam Missionary
Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Wilma Hewitt.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Billy Crawford; one daughter,
Karen Crawford McDaniel of Bessemer City; two sisters, Vesti Woods of
Candler and Roberta Norman of Balsam; two brothers, Mark Gentry Jr.
and Robert Gentry, both of Balsam; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

Jacy Jackson
Jacy Edward Jackson, 23, of Cherokee, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Highland
Memorial Park Chapel in Knoxville, Tenn. Pastor Ed King officiated.
Graveside services followed at Highland Memorial Park.
Born Oct. 7, 1979, he graduated from West High School in 1997 and was
a member of the band and the track team. He attended the University
of Tennessee and was a black belt in karate.
He was employed by Texas Roadhouse and was a member of the Eastern Band
of Cherokee. The church he grew up in was Redemption Church International.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Edward and Ella Jackson
and Rex Andes.
Surviving are his parents, Samantha and Charles Owens; father, Jacob
Jackson; grandmother, Lenore Andes; and three sisters, Jo Ella Jackson,
Ina and Morgan Owens.

Lester Buchanan
Lester Delos Buchanan, 82, of West Rogers Road, Cullowhee, died Friday,
Sept. 19, 2003, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at Zion Hill
Baptist Church. The Revs. Steve Webb, Mike Moore, Wesley Hooper and
G.W. Jamison officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
A native of Jackson County, he was a timber man and carpenter. He was
a veteran of World War II, having served in Normandy, Northern France
and Central Europe in the U.S. Army as a heavy truck driver. He received
the American Theater Campaign Medal, Eamet Campaign Medal with five
Bronze Stars, K Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal. He was the son
of the late Freeman and Beulah Deitz Buchanan.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Rogers Buchanan; and
one sister, V. Marie Callahan.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Wilkes Buchanan; one stepson, James W.
West of Waynesville; and one stepdaughter, Phyllis McGaha of Cullowhee.

Willie Painter
Willie E. Painter, 93, of Cherry Street, Sylva, died Friday, Sept.
19, 2003, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at Melton-Riddle
Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs.
Eddie Stillwell and Bill Serjak officiated. Burial was in Keener Cemetery.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was owner and operator
of Painter Machine Shop for some 50 years, a member of the International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, worked with Mead Corp. and was employed
in the Fontana Dam construction with TVA.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Sylva First
Baptist Church and the last surviving child of the late Roland and Sallie
Watson Painter.
Surviving are two daughters, Gail Allen of Summerville, Ga., and Margaret
Clark of Cummings, Ga.; one son, Eldridge Painter of Sylva; five grandchildren;
and 11 great-grandchildren.

Viola Patterson
Viola Beck Patterson, 94, of Bryson City, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003,
in Snellville, Ga.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Swain
Memorial Park. Clayton Davis conducted the services.
Born June 23, 1909, in Whittier, she taught school and was a substitute
teacher in the Bryson City school system for many years.
She was the daughter of the late John and Mary Enloe Beck and wife of
the late Claude Patterson.
Surviving are two daughters, Claudia Johnson of Arlington, Texas, and
Sarah Wilson of Snellville, Ga.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Rayburn Cagle
Rayburn A. Cagle Sr., 68, of Norman Drive, Sylva, died unexpectedly
Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Melton-Riddle
Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Johnny Swanger officiated.
Burial was in Balsam Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites conducted
by the American Legion Post 104. Pallbearers were Marcus Conner, Benny
Wilkes, David Gentry, Joe Gentry, Johnny Gentry, James Luker, Allen
Mehaffey and Benjamin Wilkes.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired truck
driver for Southwestern Logistics. Son of the late Houston Cagle and
Eliza Wilson Cagle Dills, he was a U.S. Army veteran and member of Ochre
Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Mary Ashe Cagle; one daughter, Maggie
Jane Cagle of Sylva; two sons, Ricky Cagle of Sylva and Rayburn Alton
Cagle Jr. of Waynesville; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Martha Keith
Martha E. Keith, 81, of Sylva, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, in Mission-St.
Joseph's Hospital in Asheville.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Moody Funeral Home.
The Rev. Larry Bryson will officiate. Burial will follow at Spring Hill
Cemetery in Lynchburg, Va., at a later date.
A native of Jackson County, she was of the Baptist faith. She was a
daughter of the late Fred Sr. and Ella Mae Shelton McCoy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Keith.
Surviving are one daughter, Theda Scruggs of the home; one son, Ken
McCoy of Goldsboro; two sisters, Ann Hollifield and Helen Davis, both
of Sylva; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Luzene Washington
Luzene C. Washington, 86, of Cherokee, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003,
at Cherokee Hospital after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at her residence.
Ray Kinsland and the Revs. James "Bo" Parris and Merritt Youngdeer
officiated. Burial was in Washington Cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, she was a daughter of the
late David and Sallie Chiltoskie Crowe.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jonah Washington; two sons,
Robert Lee Washington and Allen Boyd Crowe; five brothers, Abraham Crowe,
Seivere Crowe, Jesse Crowe, Sam Crowe and John Henry Crowe; and five
sisters, Stacy Hornbuckle, Dora Reed, Nellie Mae Swayney, Nancy Crowe
and Rachel Hornbuckle.
Surviving are three sons, Samuel Washington, Noah Washington and William
Washington, all of Cherokee; five daughters, Sara Jane Wabagkeck, Mabel
Parker, Betty Washington, Nora McCoy and Mary Saunooke, all of Cherokee;
one sister, Elenora Hardin of Cherokee; 32 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
