Birdie Woodard

Birdie Woodard

Birdie Johnson Woodard, 98, of Highway 441, Sylva, died Thursday, Sept. 7, in Harris Regional Hospital after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Zion Hill Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Keith Ashe, Wesley Hooper and Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Mary Clark Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel Woodard, who died in 1966; one son, Glenn Woodard; five sisters; and two brothers.

Surviving are three daughters, Maleta Burnette of Winston-Salem and Juanita Cope and Minnie Buchanan, both of Sylva; three sons, Grover Woodard of Seneca, S.C., and J. Clyde Woodard and Monroe Woodard, both of Sylva; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Sylva, N.C. 28779.

Avery Huskey

Avery "Kent" Huskey, 42, of Old Mission Road, Cherokee, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Memorial Mission Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, at Yellowhill Baptist Church. The Revs.

James Red Bradley and Timothy James officiated. Burial was in Bradley Family Cemetery.

A native of Florida, he lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a member of Sequoyah Baptist Church and was employed with Verizon telephone company in Cherokee.

He was preceded in death by by his daughter, Clarysta Huskey.

Surviving are his wife, Sharri Pleasant Huskey; his parents, Robert Bruce Huskey and Clara Bradley Huskey, both of Cherokee; three sons, James Pheasant, Cory Pheasant and Elias Cade Huskey, all of the home; two daughters, Hope Huskey of Asheville and Nataya Huskey of the home; and one brother, Nick Huskey of Cherokee.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Ruth O'Kelley

Ruth Smith O'Kelley, 79, of Sylva's Fairview community, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at Scotts Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Rich Peoples officiated. Burial was in Old Field Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Lewis and Florence McKenzie Bumgarner Smith and wife of the late Preston David O'Kelley.

Surviving are a son, David O'Kelley of Sylva; two daughters, Nell McGaha of Charlotte and Lisa O'Kelley Sims of Oxford; two brothers, James Smith of Easley, S.C., and Carl Smith of Sylva; two sisters, Daisy Smith of Sylva and Margaret Frye of Charlotte; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Raymond Wilson

The Rev. Raymond Joseph Wilson, 80, of Raymond Wilson Road, Topton, died Friday, Sept. 15, at his home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at Townson Rose Chapel in Andrews. The Rev. S.J. Waters officiated. Burial was in Union Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Macon County.

Pallbearers were David Morgan, Daniel Morgan, Kevin Hawkins, Danny Piercy, Tim Taylor, Matt Taylor and Jeff Wilson.

A native to Macon County, he was a retired Baptist minister. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign as a military policeman. He was also a retired farmer and timberman. He was a son of the late George Washington and Elizabeth Morgan Wilson.

Surviving are his wife, Hazel Bernice Passmore Wilson; three sons, Curnis Wilson of Marble, Paul Wilson of Andrews and Charles Wilson of Nantahala; seven daughters, Muriel Morgan and Willa Dean Mashburn, both of Bryson City, Connie Wilson of Andrews, Ruth Garland of Robbinsville, Diane Raxter of Nantahala, Della Mae Yonce of Hickory and Laverne Postell of Topton; a sister, Lenora Bowers of High Point; 24 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.



Lois Morris

Lois K. Morris, 75, of Cherokee, died Thursday, Sept. 14, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at her residence. The Rev. Wayne Hornbuckle officiated. Burial was in Swayney Family Cemetery.

Etta Ashe

Etta Leona Ashe of Tilley Creek Road, Cullowhee, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, in Harris Regional Hospital.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home will announce arrangements.



Tony Queen

A memorial service for Tony Cecil Queen, who died in 1994, will be held Sunday, Sept. 24, at Queen's Cemetery on Sol's Creek. The service will begin at 10 a.m. and will be conducted by the Rev. John Bates. Two singing groups, the J.B. Bryce Family from Salem, S.C., and the Full Gospel Singers from Pickens, S.C., will perform, and dinner will be held at noon at the old community building.



Ella Ashe

Ella Mae Potts Ashe, 97, of Highway 107 South, Tuckasegee, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home.

The Rev. John Reid will officiate. Burial will be at Cullowhee Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Tuckasegee Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late William Hampton and Annie Deitz Potts and wife of the late Alvin Jesse Ashe.

Surviving are two sons, Leroy Ashe of Pickens, S.C., and Alvin "A.J." Jesse Ashe Jr. of Gulfport, Miss.; two daughters, Murriel Shelton of Summerville, S.C., and Billie Lominac of Tuckasegee; one sister, Addie "Kate" Alice Watson of Cullowhee; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at Moody Funeral Home.



Lucille Crawford

Lucille Luker Crawford, 52, of Tuckasegee, died Monday, Sept. 18, in Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Tuckasegee Church of God, of which she was a member. Burial will be in Shook Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, where she lived most of her life, she was a former employee of Cashiers Plastic. She was a daughter of the late Allen and Lillie Brown Luker.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Melissa Lynn Crawford.

Surviving are one daughter, Kathy Crawford of Sylva; one son, Lewis Crawford of Travelers Rest, S.C.; two sisters, Virginia Jones of Tuckasegee and Aileen Teague of Liberty, S.C.; six brothers, James, Wallace, Elmer, Leamon, David and Thurman Luker, all of Tuckasegee; and four grandchildren.

The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.



Fred Brown

Fred J. Brown Jr., 66, of Cullowhee's Pine Creek community, died Monday, Sept. 18, from a tractor rollover accident.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Pine Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Joel Jenkins and Wayne Price will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Sylva American Legion Post 104. Pallbearers will be Chuck Calhoun, Wallace Alexander, Reece Edwards, Jim Grindle, Gary Riddle and Mike Riddle.

A native of Jackson County, he lived most of his life in Greenville, S.C. He was a manufacture service representative for Komatsu Equipment. A U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was a son of the late Fred J. Sr. and Ruth Ellen Stewart Brown. He was a member of Siloam Baptist Church in Easley, S.C.

Surviving are his wife, Sue Riddle Brown; one son, Kenneth F. Brown of Charlotte; one daughter, Robin B. Patterson of Powdersville, S.C.; one sister, Vera Ellen Keeble of Blacksburg, Va.; one brother, John L. Brown of Candler; and four grandchildren.

Alvin Fullbright

Alvin D. "Sol" Fullbright, 89, of Old Settlement Road, Sylva, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, in Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel.

The Rev. Ray McCall will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was an educator serving 30-plus years teaching at Balsam, Johns Creek, Oak Hill, Wilmot, Zion Hill, Qualla, Webster and Whittier. He served as principal at Qualla, Webster and Whittier, retiring while at Webster.

A basketball coach, he played basketball with Western Carolina Teacher's College. He was a charter member of the Jackson County Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a member, deacon, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent of Webster Baptist Church.

Son of the late Thomas Polk and Ellen Cowan Fullbright, he was preceded in death by the children's mother, Nell Byrd Fullbright, who died in 1980; his second wife, Cathryn Davis Fullbright, who died this year; one son, Bobby Fullbright; and one grandson.

Surviving are three sons, Jerry Fullbright of Sylva; Kenneth Fullbright of Weaverville and Alton Fullbright of Winston-Salem; one sister, Nan Ross of Greenville, S.C.; one brother, Monroe Fullbright of Greenville, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Webster Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 35, Webster, N.C. 28788.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at the funeral home.
