The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to readers.

When possible, obituaries should be sent to the Herald from the funeral home. Information received will be placed in our standard obituary format.

We publish names of all of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

A brief history of the deceased is included. We include information on their employment, as well as professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

Steve Eller, long-time Southwestern Commission development specialist, dies

Eller Eller

Steve Eller, 47, of Sylva, died unexpectedly Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at his residence.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Cullowhee United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.

A native of Jackson County, he was a 1973 graduate of Cullowhee High School. He received bachelors degrees in history and environmental health, graduating summa cum laude (with highest honors), and a master's of public affairs, all from Western Carolina University.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy and a long-time development specialist with Southwestern Commission, he was well known throughout the region for his grant-writing, facilitation and mediation skills.

He served as chairman of United Christian Ministries, Mountain Mediation Services and the Administrative Council of Cullowhee United Methodist Church, where he taught Bible studies and Sunday school. He was on the Wesley foundation board at WCU and was a lay delegate to the WNC annual conference of the United Methodist Church. He had also been active in Kudzu Players.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Reid Eller; his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Gerald Eller of Asheville; and two sisters, Jerri Cathey of Winston-Salem and Jeanne Hubbard of Asheville.

Harry Van Den Heuvel

Harry Andrew Van Den Heuvel, 93, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at Lake Park Nursing Center in Union County.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church.

Son of the late Louis and Henrietta Van Den Heuvel, he was born Nov. 10, 1908, in Ladysmith, Wisc. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Carpenters Local 626 Maryland and was a bridge builder and carpenter.

He was preceded in death by seven sisters; four brothers; and one grandson.

Surviving are one daughter, Etta Merritt of Cullowhee; one son, Harry E. Van Den Heuvel of Newark, Del.; one brother, Charles Van Den Heuvel of Bellflower, Calif.; four granddaughters; and one great-grandson.



Edna Graham

Edna Luellen Graham, 83, of Whittier, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, in a Swain County care center.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Hutchinson officiated. Burial was at Swain Memorial Park.

A native of Swain County, she retired from Stowe Spinning in Belmont and was a member of Whittier United Methodist Church. She was the daughter of the late Carson L. and Susie LeQuire Grant and wife of the late Palmer Graham.

Surviving are one son, Kenneth Graham of Whittier; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Avery Dillard

Thomas Avery Dillard, 84, of 52 Wildwood Acres Road, Asheville, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at Mission-St. Joseph's Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at West Asheville Baptist Church. The Revs. Dr. James Johnson and Tony Hooper officiated. Burial was in Pisgah View Memorial Park.

A native of Jackson County, he lived most of his life in Buncombe County. He had worked for Federated Insurance Co. and Hutton Insurance Co. and was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and former Sunday school teacher.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a son of the late Furman and Ellen Hatcher Dillard. He was preceded in death by one son, James Mark Dillard; two sisters, Leona Birchfield and Mae Dillard; one brother, Furman Dillard; and stepmother, Florence Dillard.

Surviving are his wife, Jannette White Dillard; two daughters, Anne Dillard Alley and Kathy Hooper, both of Asheville; one sister, Elizabeth Beck of Sylva; and four grandchildren.

Irene Ashe

IIrene Cagle Ashe, 89, of Spring Arbor Court, Apex, formerly of Sylva, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at Western Wake Medical Center in Cary after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Ray McCall officiated. Burial was in Old Savannah Cemetery. Pallbearers were Baxter Wood, Jay Denton, Bill Green, Travis Deitz, Carroll Buchanan and Bruce Bradley.

A native of Jackson County, she had lived the past year in Apex. She retired from C.J. Harris Hospital and was a member of Old Savannah Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Burder and Mattie Sutton Cagle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dearl Ashe, who died in 1986.

Surviving are three daughters, Patsy Ashe of Cary, Judy Wynne of Burlington and Delanie Deitz of Stevenson, Ala.; one son, Felix Ashe of Kernersville; one sister, Mildred Green of Dallas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

David Prince

David Wayne Prince, 24, of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, as the result of a hit-and-run automobile accident near Rockport, Wash.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. at Hamilton Baptist Church. Pastor Bruce Martin of the Concrete Assembly of God Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Forest Park Cemetery in Concrete, Wash.

He was born Nov. 10, 1977, in Sedro-Woolley, Wash., the son of Wayne and Susan Hoffman Prince. He was a lifetime resident of Concrete, where he attended school and worked as a water well technician with his father's company, Prince Well Drilling.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, William Carl Hoffman.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are one brother, John William McCrutcheon of Hamilton, Wash.; and grandmothers, Edith Hoffman of Concrete and Eva Ammons of Tuckasegee.

Etta Wood

Etta Lovedahl Wood, 92, of Cullowhee's Caney Fork community, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Katrina Evans, pastor of John's Creek United Methodist Church, officiated. Burial was in Balsam Grove Cemetery, Caney Fork. Pallbearers were Keith Lovedahl, Joe Guy, Charlie Shular and Larry, Dale and David Mathis.

With the exception of five years spent in Tennessee, she lived on Caney Fork. Daughter of the late John V. and Marry Hooper Lovedahl, she was a member of John's Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Cecil Wood, who died in 1981; two sons, Jerry Wallace Wood and Denny Lamar Wood; and one grandson, Dwight Alfred Coggins.

Surviving are two daughters, Norma Jean Wood Coggins of Cullowhee and Mary Sue Wood Starnes of Charlotte; one brother, Jeff Lovedahl of Cullowhee; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Frank Ensley

Frank Ensley, 85, of Knoxville, Tenn., died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, after a brief illness.

Private funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Knoxville.

A native of Jackson County, he was the last surviving child of the late Tolvin B. and Josephine Middleton Ensley. The Middleton and Ensley families were among the earliest settlers in Jackson County. Polly Middleton Gap in the Canada community was named after his great-grandmother, Mary ³Polly² Middleton.

He was a World War II veteran and after the war moved to Knoxville, where he became postmaster in the small community of Neubert Springs. In 1980 he retired from the Knoxville Post Office, where he worked as a supervisor.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose; two sons, Kenneth and Frank Ensley Jr.; one daughter, Lynda Ensley Webster; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Jackson County Animal Shelter.
