Pat Smith
Pat Hornbuckle Smith, 68, of Tsali Care Center, Cherokee, died Tuesday,
Sept. 9, 2003, at Cherokee Indian Hospital after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Wright's Creek
Baptist Church. The Rev. Dan Lambert officiated. Burial was in Hornbuckle
Family Cemetery.
A native of Swain County, she was the house parent for Cherokee Children's
Home, a member of Wright's Creek Baptist Church and daughter of the
late John Russell and Stacey Crowe Hornbuckle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Smith, who died
in 1994; three brothers; and three sisters.
Survived are four daughters, Loretta H. Kirby of Sylva and Paula Holloway,
Billie Jean Huskey and Frieda Huskey, all of Cherokee; one son, John
David Huskey of New Jersey; one sister, Frances Wahnetah of Cherokee;
two brothers, Alex and John R. Hornbuckle Jr., both of Cherokee; eight
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Frances Henson
Frances Chambers Henson, 56, of 9 Southern Magnolia Lane, Candler,
died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at Mission-St. Joseph's Health System
of cancer.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, in the Canton
chapel of Wells Funeral Homes. The Revs. Jack W. Collins and Charlie
Sams officiated. Burial followed at Gwyn Cemetery. Pallbearers were
Ricky Henson, Doug Crawford, Ronnie Metcalf, Andrew and Ashley McArthur
and John Crawford. Honorary pallbearer was Shay Henson.
She was a native of Haywood County and had lived in Buncombe County
most of her life. She was a daughter of Mable Murray Chambers of Candler
and the late Elton Agustus Chambers. She retired from American Enka
with 30 years of service in 2000 and was a member of Ridgeway Baptist
Church.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband of five years,
Fred W. Henson; one daughter, Kelly Greenlee of Damascus, Ark.; one
stepson, Jonathan Henson of Sylva; four sisters, Kathryn Crawford of
Cruso, Ellene Metcalf of Candler, Janet Evans of Maggie Valley and Reva
Granati of India Atlantic, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

Raymond Bradley
Raymond Bradley, 86, of Cherokee's Wolfetown community, died Friday,
Sept. 12, 2003, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at Macedonia
Baptist Church. The Revs. James Red Bradley and Wayne Carson officiated.
Burial was in Bradley Cemetery with military rites conducted by Steve
Youngdeer American Legion Post No. 143, of which he was a member. Pallbearers
were Roger Raby, J.D. Raby, Donald Raby, Jerry Raby, Robert Long, Ethan
Arch, Tommy Lambert and Boyd Owle.
A lifelong resident of the Cherokee Indian Reservation, he was a retired
farmer, U.S. Air Force veteran of WWII, a lifelong member of Macedonia
Baptist Church, a member of Tsali Senior Center and a farmer and cattleman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Raby Bradley, who died
in 1999; three brothers, Lewis, Johnson and Freeman Bradley; and two
sisters, Lucinda Queen and Betty Owle.
Surviving are one daughter, Anna "Sue" Louise Hornbuckle of
Cherokee; three sons, Ray H. Bradley of Cherokee, Jarrett Raymond Bradley
of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Ronnie Curtis Bradley of Cherokee; one brother,
George "Shag" Bradley of Cherokee; seven grandchildren; and
nine great-grandchildren.

Elva Ridley
Elva Harris Ridley, 85, of Skyland Drive, Sylva, died Friday, Sept.
12, 2003, at her residence after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Scotts Creek
Baptist Church. The Revs. Rich Peoples and Lloyd Fish officiated. Burial
was in Keener Cemetery. Pallbearers were Kevin Monteith, Harvey Jackson,
Danny Orr, Ronnie Harris, Charles Roper, Bob Robinson, George Birdwell
and Mike Deitz.
A lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was born to Florence and
Wes Harris on Aug. 5, 1918. She was married to Alvin Ridley on May 14,
1940. He preceded her in death in 1996.
She graduated from Sylva High School in 1935 and Knoxville Business
College in 1938. She worked for Reece Hampton Motor Co. as secretary
and worked in the Sylva Supply office. She went to Martin Aircraft Co.
in Baltimore and worked during the war.
In 1949 and 1950 she worked for the town of Sylva as secretary. In 1957,
she took a job with the American Cancer Clinic and worked seven years
at C.J. Harris Hospital. She was the secretary for 13 1/2 years for
the late Dr. David Daniel.
She had been a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church since 1930 and
was baptized in Scotts Creek by the Rev. W.N. Cook. She was a GA leader
for seven years; member of WMU; member of the Ladies Sunday school class,
where she was the secretary; secretary to the Library Committee since
1979; and served on various church committees.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Nova Robinson and Hattie Deitz;
and two brothers, Amos and Avery Harris.
Surviving are one daughter, Patsy Ridley Voorhees of Rock Hill, S.C.;
two sons, Doyle Ridley of Franklin and Donald Ridley of Sylva; one sister,
Jean Harris Middleton of Denver; two brothers, Homer Harris of Sylva
and James Harris of Andrews; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter,

Eugene Austin
Eugene "Babe" Austin, 57, of Skyland Drive, Sylva, died Saturday, Sept.
13, 2003, at his residence after a brief illness. Funeral services were
held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the chapel at at Melton-Riddle
Funeral Home. The Revs. Clemmy Queen and Johnny Norris officiated. Burial
was in Love Cemetery. Pallbearers were Johnny Phillips, Andrew Ashe,
Steve Carpenter, Dean Wykle, Mike Anders and Butch Rhinehart.
Honorary pallbearers were Joe Moody and Jeep Owens. A native and lifelong
resident of Jackson County, he was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist
Church and worked at N.C. Department of Transportation for 37 years
in the maintenance department. He was a son of the late Lonis Lee and
Vergie Pauline Sneed Austin. He was preceded in death by one son, Jimmy
Lee Austin; one sister, Martha Pauline Austin; and one granddaughter.
Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Linda Sue Sutherland Austin; two
daughters, Donna Austin Ashe of Sylva and Robin Austin Mathis of Canton;
one sister, Marie Cope of Sylva; four brothers, Roger Austin of Newport
News, Va., Clifford "Joe" Austin and Ricky Austin, both of Sylva, and
Robert Austin of Salisbury; and six grandchildren.

Sherrill Brown
Sherrill Brown, 92, of Longivew, Wash., died Aug. 29, 2003, at Hospice
Care Center.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, in Steele Chapel
at Longview Memorial Park. Pastors Kevin White and Bill Wells officiated.
Burial was in Longivew Memorial Park.
He was born April 29, 1911, in Jackson County's Canada community to
Rufus and Elizabeth Brown and attended schools here. He moved to Washington
in 1944.
He logged for Weyerhaeuser in Vader and Ryderwood before working in
the cabinet division of Long Bell and International Paper from 1944
until retiring in 1966. He wrote and published hundreds of gospel songs
and sang for many years with the Ambassadors Quartet. He was a longtime
member of the First Baptist Church and the senior adult choir Joy Singers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who died in 1995; an infant son
and daughter; four brothers, Claude, Will, Ted and Hexter Brown; and
one sister, Bess Mathis.
Surviving are one daughter, Sandra McGhee of Longview; two granddaughters;
and two great-granddaughters.

Willa Church
Willa Elise Jorgensen Church, 32, of 114 Fairview Road, Marion, died
Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at Sharon Presbyterian
Church in Charlotte.
Associate Pastor Terry Hanna officiated. A second memorial service will
be held at the Jubilee Community on Wall Street in Asheville Sunday,
Oct. 5, at 2 p.m.
Formerly of Charlotte, Asheville and Sylva, she also lived in Wilmington
and Delaware.
Surviving are her mother, Carole Jorgensen of Charlotte; her father,
William Jorgensen of Porterfield, Wis.; one son, Trevor Church of Arden;
two sisters, Ericka Jorgensen of Tacoma, Wash., and Kirsten Jorgensen
of Landenberg, Pa.; and her grandmother, Eve Lynch of Wonder Lake, Ill.

Margaret Frady
Margaret Ann Messer Frady, 56, of Bryson City, formerly of Whittier,
died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, in Gaston County.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Conley's Creek
Freewill Baptist Church. The Revs.
Robert Odiear and Harold Webb officiated. Burial was in Jones Cemetery.
A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of Finely and Ethel Kirkland
Herron of Whittier.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Preston Frady;
four sons, Rick Messer of Eastanollee, Ga., Randy Messer of Sylva, Rusty
Messer of Bryson City and Ray Messer of Cherokee; three brothers, Steve
Herron of Whittier, Tommy Herron Blacksburg, S.C., and Harold Herron
of Mt. Holly; one sister, Velma Anthony of York, S.C.; 15 grandchildren;
and four great-grandchildren.

George Gregoretti
George Gregoretti, 82, of Franklin, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at
his residence.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Bruno and Emma
Gregoretti. He moved to Meriden, Conn., at the age of 18, where he met
his wife of 62 years, Rose Monaco Gregoretti.
He served with the U.S. Army in World War II in Okinawa, Japan. He and
his wife were long-time residents of Southington, Conn., until they
retired to Florida in 1980.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Phillip Gregoretti
of Fresno, Calif., and Gordon Gregoretti of Madison, Conn.; one daughter,
Donna Gregoretti Swartwout of Franklin; two sisters, Arthea Killen and
Victoria Dulko, both of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; three grandchildren; and
two great-grandchildren.

Dieter Sperber
Dieter Sperber, 62, of Christopher Lane, Sylva, died Thursday, Sept.
11, 2003, at the VA Medical Center in Asheville.
A private memorial will be held at a later date.
He was born in Warren Muritz, Germany, and had lived in Jackson County
since 1983. He was a retired engineering draftsman, a U.S. Army veteran
of Vietnam and son of the late Alfred and Hulda Walters Sperber.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Bruno Sperber.
Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Michele Anton Sperber; one daughter,
Kelly Lyn Phillips of Sneads Ferry; one son, Oliver Rex "Kip"
Place of Hickory; one sister, Hilda Merckens of Augusta, Maine; two
brothers, Sigfried and Alfred Sperber of Buffalo, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.
