Birdie Woodard

Birdie Woodard

Birdie Johnson Woodard, 98, of Highway 441, Sylva, died Thursday, Sept. 7, in Harris Regional Hospital after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Zion Hill Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Keith Ashe, Wesley Hooper and Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Mary Clark Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel Woodard, who died in 1966; one son, Glenn Woodard; five sisters; and two brothers.

Surviving are three daughters, Maleta Burnette of Winston-Salem and Juanita Cope and Minnie Buchanan, both of Sylva; three sons, Grover Woodard of Seneca, S.C., and J. Clyde Woodard and Monroe Woodard, both of Sylva; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Thomas Moore

Thomas Rex Moore, 78, of Dillsboro, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 5, in the VA Medical Center in Oteen.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hayesville Baptist Presbyterian Cemetery.

A native of Clay County, he had lived in Jackson County for the past 45 years. He was the son of the late Charles E. and Carrie Hampton Moore. He was a retired barber, running Rex Barber Shop in Jackson County for a number of years, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Surviving are four daughters, Nancy Bristol, Delores Griggs and Judy Gregory of Andrews and Catherine "Tommi" Felkel of Arden; two sons, Greg Moore of Candler and Jon Moore of Arden; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.



Euel Carpenter

Eual C. Carpenter, 82, died Sunday, Sept. 3, at his home in Hamilton, Wash.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9. at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley, Wash. Burial was in Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery Urn Garden.

A native of Franklin, he was a son of the late John and Ada Norton Carpenter. He was a resident of the Hamilton, Wash., area since 1936.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. For many years he was a cook in various logging camps in Western Washington, and for 14 years he worked for Seattle City Light, retiring in 1976. He was a member of Elks Club 1604 in Mt. Vernon and the Wildcat Steelhead Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Knippel, who died in 1995; two brothers, Porter and Grady Carpenter; and two sisters, Mamie Ellis and Pearl Battles.

Surviving are one brother, Ray Carpenter of Stanwood, Wash.; and one sister, Blanche Pinckard of San Diego, Calif.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.



Jim Conseen

James "Jim" Conseen, 60, of Cherokee's Big Cove community, died Thursday, Sept. 7, at his residence.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Boiling Springs Baptist Church Cemetery on 32 Hundred Acre Tract. The Revs. James "Bo" Parris and Denny Crowe officiated.

A native of Swain County, he was a former resident of Raleigh. He was and a member of Cherokee United Methodist Church and the son of the late Lucy Ann Conseen Queen.

Surviving are one son, James Richard Conseen of Asheville; one daughter, Kathy Ann Arrington of Charlotte; two sisters, Catherine Lambert and Joyce Dugan, both of Cherokee; and one grandson.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



James Passmore

James E. "Jim" Passmore, 59, of Rushville, Ill., died Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Cobb Hospital in Austell, Ga., of an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Rushville Free Methodist Church. The Rev. Brian Mickson officiated. Burial was in Rushville City Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, he had lived in Rushville for the past four years. He was a long-haul trucker and was employed by Henderson Trucking Co. of Salem, Ill. He was a Vietnam War veteran and a Baptist by faith. He was the son of the late Ed and Mary Ashe Passmore.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, James E. Passmore Jr.; and two infant sisters.

Surviving are his wife, Kathy Cooley Passmore; four daughters, Patty Passmore, Rose Strouser and Jennifer Passmore, all of Shermansdale, Pa., and Diane Bowers of Colorado; two sons, George Passmore of the home and Doyle Shook of Sylva; one stepdaughter, Casandra Cooley of the home; one sister, Delaine Wilkes of Sylva; and nine grandchildren.



Frankie Gibbs

Frankie Victoria Gibbs, 86, of Sedro Woolley, Wash., died Saturday, Sept. 2, at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley. Burial was in Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery.

A native of Madison County, she was the daughter of Melvin and Sylvania Lunsford Creasman. She was raised and attended school in Jackson County. In 1945, she moved to the State of Washington with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Gibbs; one son, Frank; one sister, Bonnie Creasman; two grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Surviving are four sons, Jim of Lompoc, Calif., and Melvin, Ed and Jack of Sedro-Woolley; four daughters, Juanita James of Lead, S.D., and Linda Osborne, Elizabeth Maddox and Mary Kay Mellem of Sedro-Woolley; three sisters, Florence Gibbs and Georgia Jones of Sylva and Minnie Schrader of Menlo, Ga.; 26 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.



James Jones

James "Guy" Jones, 54, of Charles Street, Sylva, died Sunday, Sept. 10, at Mission-St. Joseph Hospital in Asheville.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Harry Vance and Sherrill Ammons officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Nephews served as pallbearers.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the U.S. Army. He was a member of East Sylva Baptist Church and was employed by Allison's Inc. for 16 years. He was a son of the late Aude Jones.

Surviving are his mother, Maudie Jones of Sylva; and seven brothers, Dempsey, Billy, Harry and Randy Jones, all of Sylva, Danny Jones of Fletcher, Leon Jones of Thomasville and Kennith Jones of Atlanta.



Sibbald Smith

Sibbald "Sib" Smith, 71, of Lee Taylor Road, Cherokee, died Saturday, Sept. 9, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at Yellowhill Baptist Church. The Rev. James "Red" Bradley officiated. Military graveside rites were conducted at the Veterans Cemetery with Steve Youngdeer Post American Legion. Nephews served as pallbearers, with grandsons as honorary pallbearers.

He was a native and resident of Cherokee and a member of Siloam Baptist Church in Ninety Six, S.C. Son of the late Thaddeus Sibbald Smith, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Cherokee American Legion Steve Youngdeer Post. After serving in the National Park Service for 34 years, he and his wife moved back to Cherokee in 1999.

He retired in 1994 as superintendent of the Cowpens/NineySix National Historic Sites in South Carolina. While in the park service, he held park superintendent positions at Chattaloochee National Scenic River, Cape Canaveral National Seashore and Ocmulgee National Monument. While at Ocmulgee, he directed operations of an area set aside by Congress in 1934 to preserve the remnants of early Indian civilizations in the Southeastern States. He also served as ranger at the Natchez Trace Parkway, Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

He joined the Department of Interior in 1965 as a resident worker at Oconaluftee Job Corps Center before starting his national park service career. He owned a grocery store and motel in Cherokee and worked as a district circulation manager for a Knoxville (Tenn.) newspaper. He was a supervisor of a fish management program for the Eastern Band of Cherokee and was a former tribal council member.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and seven sisters.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Mary Catherine Burgess Smith; his mother, Estellene Adams Payne of Greensboro; two sons, Gary Dean Smith of Clinton, S.C., and Sibbald Michael Smith of Simpsonville, S.C.; one daughter, Catherine Smith Burns of Rome, Ga.; two sisters, Carrie Lambert of Cherokee and Phoebe Sharpe of Knoxville; and eight grandchildren. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Alfredo Cucumber

Alfredo Mark Cucumber, 39, of Blue Wing Road, Cherokee, died Monday, Sept. 11, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the Cherokee Pentecostal Holiness Church in Cherokee. Ray Kinsland officiated. Burial was in Oocumma Cemetery in Cherokee. Pallbearers were Bruce Reed, Shannon McMillan, Brandon McMillan, Jeff Saunooke, Nehemiah Toineta and Bobby Cucumber.

Son of Dorothy Welch of Cherokee and the late Joe Jasper Cucumber Sr., he was a construction worker and an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Daniel Monroe Cucumber.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Sherry Denise Cucumber; three stepdaughters, Twila Reed, Vita Reed and Kimberly Reed, all of Cherokee; three sisters, Pam Cucumber, Sandy Cucumber and Erma Cucumber McMillan, all of Cherokee; two brothers, Joe Cucumber Jr. and Donald Cucumber, both of Cherokee; and one step granddaughter.

Janet Gillespie

Janet Marshall Gillespie, 56, of Bryson City's Hughes Branch community, died Friday, Sept. 1, at her residence.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness of Sylva, of which she was a member. Carl Thomasson and Elmer Fuller officiated.

A native of Manchester, Conn., and former resident of Florida, she had been a resident of Swain County for the past 26 years. She was the daughter of the late Clyde and Kay Marshall.

Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Lance Gillespie; one daughter, Catherine Susanne Pittman of Bryson City; two sons, David Gillespie of Clyde and Greg Gillespie of Canton; one brother, Bruce Marshall of Morganton; and four grandchildren.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Stephen Zachary

Stephen Craig Zachary, 50, of Cullowhee, died Saturday, Sept. 9, in Harris Regional Hospital after a battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Mike Dellinger and Roy Burnette officiated. Burial was in East LaPorte Cemetery.

A native of Detroit, he had lived in Cullowhee the past two and a half years, having lived most of his life in southern Michigan. He was a sales representative with Anderson Auto in Waynesville.

Surviving are his parents, Davis and Faye Buchanan Zachary of Cullowhee; one son, Jason Zachary of Madison Heights, Mich.; two brothers, Ronald and Kenneth Zachary, both of Michigan; and one grandson.
