The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to readers.

When possible, obituaries should be sent to the Herald from the funeral home. Information received will be placed in our standard obituary format.

We publish names of all of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

A brief history of the deceased is included. We include information on their employment, as well as professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

Timothy Potts

Timothy "Timmy" Alan Potts, 17, of Highlands, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at First Baptist Church of Highlands. The Revs. Ted Edwards and Steve Stroup officiated. Burial was in Highlands Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Brantley Potts, Tony Brooks, Bobby Luker, Chris Keener, Nick Fedarico, Greg Parker, Chris Lowler, Chris Fabien and Jeremy Reese.

A lifelong resident of Highlands and Cashiers, he was the son of Cynthia Watson Potts of Sylva and the late Keith A. Potts, who died in 1999. He worked for Allmond's Waterproofing and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Geneva Bradley Potts.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are two sisters, Amy Potts of Sylva and Juli Anne Potts of Cashiers; paternal grandfather, James Potts of Highlands; maternal grandmother, Ruth Clawson of Cashiers; great-grandmothers, Mary Rogers and Daisy Watson, both of Cashiers, and Sybil Bradley of Franklin.

Memorials may be made to one's favorite charity.

James Snavely

James Alvin Snavely, 71, of Whittier's Dicks Creek community, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at Westside Church of Christ on Old Murphy Road in Franklin. Evangelist John Gurtler will officiate.

A native of Middlesboro, Ky., he lived in North Carolina for the past nine years. He was a certified property appraiser and owner of Jim Snavely Century 21 Realty in Tampa, Fla., where he retired.

Son of the late Edgar H. Snavely and Nancy Lynch Snavely, he was a member of Westside Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by one son, Steve Snavely; one sister, Edith Williams; and two brothers, Howard and Robert Snavely.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Barbara Jamison Snavely; two sons, James A. Snavely II of Balrico, Fla., and Scott Snavely of Tallahassee, Fla.; three sisters, Doris Baker of Lutz, Fla., Dorothy Breeding of White Pine, Tenn., and Lila Williams of Texas; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice, 132 Sylva Plaza, Sylva, N.C. 28779.

Juanita Moore

Juanita McIntosh Moore of 125 Logan Ave., Asheville, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Brown Temple C.M.E. Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Gary McDaniel Sr. officiated. Burial was in Sunset Cemetery.

A native of Taccoa, Ga., she was a resident of Asheville for several years. She was a 1940 graduate of Stephens-Lee High School and attended Bennett College. She lived in Washington, D.C., before returning to Asheville, where she retired from the National Climatic Center and was an honorary member of the Royalettes Social Club.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas McIntosh.

Surviving are three daughters, Cynthia McLarty of Columbus, Ohio; Sandra Thompson of Asheville and the Rev. Damita Jo Wilder of Sylva; one son, Benjamin Moore Jr. of Asheville; one sister, Beunice Koltun of Asheville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Dennis Byrd

Dennis Lee "Denny" Byrd, 51, of Whittier, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, in Jackson County.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home in Bryson City. The Rev. Charles Ray Ball officiated. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by Steve Youngdeer Post of the American Legion. Nephews and cousins served as pallbearers.

A native of Cherokee, he was a son of the late Edgar and Lillian Chickilelie Byrd. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and construction worker and had worked for his brother, Andy Chickilelie, for three years.

He was preceded in death by one brother, David Edgar Byrd.

Surviving are two daughters, Katie Marie Byrd of Connecticut and Lillian Chickilelie Byrd of the home; one sister, Betty Wood of Whittier; and one brother, Andy Chickilelie of Bryson City.



Suenell Spiro

Suenell Bennett Spiro of Sylva died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church of Sylva at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8. A memorial service will be held in Jacksonville, Fla.

A native of Lenox, Ga., she lived in Jacksonville, Fla., from 1964 until 2001. She attended Hampton Dubois Academy in Zellwood, Fla., and graduated with highest honors from Mississippi College. She served as first lady of Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain and Jacksonville University for 15 years, was a community leader and served on numerous community boards.

She was co-founder of the Jacksonville Suicide Prevention Center, YMCA, board member of the Mental Health Association, Friday Musicale, National Conference of Christians and Jews, USO, Jacksonville Symphony, Woman's Club, Inner Wheel, and was president and held local, state and regional offices in the Jacksonville Garden Club. She received the Eve Award for Volunteerism in 1974.

She was a member of PEO, Delta Delta Delta, First Baptist Church of Asheville and later the Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church of Jacksonville.

Surviving are two sons, Capt. R. Timothy Spiro, USN, of Silverdale, Wash., and James M. Spiro of Sylva; one daughter, Elizabeth S. Spiro of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Ouida Heist of Florida and Eloise Carmody of Virginia; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, Contributions may be made to the Suenell Bennett Spiro Scholarship Fund of the Garden Club of Jacksonville, the Alzheimer's Research Center at the Mayo Clinic of Jacksonville or the Suenell Bennett Spiro Botanical Garden at Jacksonville University.

Annie Farmer

Annie Henry Farmer, 68, of East Sylva Circle, Sylva, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Samuel Manus and Woody Hutchison officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native of Macon County, she lived in Jackson County most of her life.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jesse Frank Henry.

Surviving are her husband, Lon Farmer; mother, Bessie Carver Henry of Sylva; three sisters, Aquilla Farmer and Lillie Brown, both of Sylva, and Frankie Taylor of Franklin; and three brothers, Perry and David Henry, both of Sylva, and Carl Henry of Stockbridge, Ga.



Frank Ensley

Frank Ensley, 85, of Knoxville, Tenn., died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, after a brief illness.

Private funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Knoxville.

A native of Jackson County, he was the last surviving child of the late Tolvin B. and Josephine Middleton Ensley. The Middleton and Ensley families were among the earliest settlers in Jackson County. Polly Middleton Gap in the Canada community was named after his great-grandmother, Mary "Polly" Middleton.

He was a World War II veteran and after the war moved to Knoxville, where he became postmaster in the small community of Neubert Springs. In 1980 he retired from the Knoxville Post Office, where he worked as a supervisor.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose; two sons, Kenneth and Frank Ensley Jr.; one daughter, Lynda Ensley Webster; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Jackson County Animal Shelter.

Andrew Pilkey Jr.

Andrew Lee "Drew" Pilkey Jr., 28, of Roberta, Ga., died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Goddard Funeral Home in Roberta.

A former resident of Jackson County's Tuckasegee community, he was born in Bibb County, Ga., where he lived most of his life. He moved to Crawford County a year ago.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dan and Maybell Honeycutt, and grandfather, Candler Pilkey.

Surviving are his parents, Andrew Lee Pilkey Sr. and June Honeycutt Pilkey of Roberta; and one sister, Christina Creyts of Marietta, Ga.;



Dwight Crowe

Dwight Ossie Crowe, 47, of Lambert Branch, Cherokee, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Yellow Hill Baptist Church. The Revs. Red Bradley and Roland Whitaker officiated. Burial was at Crowe Family Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, he was a son of Katie Crowe Jessan of Cherokee.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Renee Crowe; two daughters, Destiny and Stephanie Crowe; two brothers, Mitchell and Robert Dennis Crowe; and two sisters, May Ann Rich and Martha Sherrill.

Bonnie Green

Bonnie McMahan Green, 89, of Dillsboro's Locust Field community, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Locust Field Baptist Church. The Revs. Charles Carnes and Anthony Green officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, she had lived in Washington for several years before moving back to Jackson County in 1991. She was the oldest member of Locust Field Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and WMU director. She was the daughter of the late Coleman and Emma McMahan.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry Green and Isaac Green; one daughter, Lucy Faulkner; and two infant sons.

Surviving are three daughters, Virginia Pangle of Dillsboro and Milded Jones and Cricket Hooper, both of Washington; one son, Paul Green of Canton; five stepdaughters, Roberta Nations, Margie Black, Madge Korr, Barbara Butcher and Cherry Jones, all of Washington; five stepsons, Marvin, Harry, Bill, Bobby and Gerald, all of Washington; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, step great-grandchildren and step great-great-grandchildren.
