Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Thomas Sturken

Thomas Louis Sturken, 87, of Bennett Hill, Bryson City, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, in Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at noon Saturday, Sept. 6, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Father Shawn O’Neil officiated.

A native of New York, he had been a resident of Swain County since 1984. He was a former plant manager for the Sylco Corp., formerly Harn, in Sylva.

He was a former board member for Harris Regional Hospital, a member of the Rotary Club of Sylva and a member of the Knights of Columbus in New York. He was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where he served on the church council. He volunteered for many organizations in Bryson City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anne Sturken; and one daughter, Johanna Sturken.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Josephine Sturken; two daughters, Anne Allman of Bryson City and Jennifer Maurer of Merrick, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Opal Kline

Opal Picklesimer Kline, 99, of Raleigh, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at the old schoolhouse in Whiteside Cove. A private burial held in the family cemetery in Whiteside Cove.

She was born Jan. 26, 1904, to Effie Alley Picklesimer and Henry Barak Picklesimer. Raised in Jackson County under the cliffs of Whiteside Mountain, she graduated from high school and studied at Mary Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Raleigh. A 1925 graduate, she was the oldest living nursing graduate of that hospital, which was later bought by Raleigh Community Hospital.

She was married to Philip H. Kline from 1929 until his death in 1989. They lived and worked in six states, in addition to Mexico and Pakistan, before retiring back to Whiteside Cove and then the Asheville area. In Raleigh she resided at Sunrise Assisted Living.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her five sisters, Pearl, Ruby, Onyx, Coral Lee and Emerald Gladys; two brothers, Heywood and Louis; one daughter, Phyllis Parks; and two grandsons.

Surviving are one brother, Thomas of Weaverville; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials can be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Doris McLean

Doris Sandlin McLean, 64, of Ela, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, of cancer.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at Bryson City Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Judy Stanley and David Russell officiated. Burial was at Swain Memorial Park.

A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Harold Hyams and Mozelle Stack Sandlin.

She was co-owner and operator of the Redskin Motel in Cherokee for many years. She was a former member of the DAR, former member and chairperson of the Swain County Board of Social Services and a member of the Bryson City Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two sons, Harold "Hezzie" McLean of Hendersonville and Richard "Ritchie" McLean of Andrews; one brother, Harold T. Sandlin of Ela.; and three grandchildren.

James Weems

James "Jimmy" Harry Weems IV, 52, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, following a heart attack in Alaska.

After growing up in New Jersey and moving to North Carolina, he started and operated three successful small businesses. He was a teacher of whitewater rafting skills. In his later years he moved to Alaska.

Surviving are one son, James; and one brother, Marshall.

Ketchikan Mortuary of Ketchikan, Alaska, handled arrangements.

L.D. Brown

L.D. Brown, 72, of Cathlamet, Wash., died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, at his residence following a long illness.
Funeral services were held in Washington.

A native of Jackson County’s Canada community, he had lived in Washington for the past 40 years. He retired from the U.S. Army after serving 25 years, including the Korean Conflict. He worked in the timber industry.

Son of the late Griffin and Olia York Brown, he was a member of Dodgen Ridge Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Ursalee Dickson.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Joretta Parker Brown; two sons, Tony and Mike Brown of Washington; three brothers, Clydeth Brown and Warner Brown, both of Tuckasegee, and James Brown of Bridgeton, N.J.; three sisters, Iceline Price of Tuckasegee, Lucy McCall of Brevard and Nellie Griner of Bridgeton, N.J.; and three grandchildren.

James Oliver

James C. Oliver, 78, of Chino, Calif., died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Pomona Valley Hospital in Pomona, Calif.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Bryson City First Baptist Church. The Rev. John Taglairini officiated. Burial was in Swain Memorial Park.

A native of Swain County, he was a former Alarka community resident. He was a son of the late Crawford and Elizabeth Phillips Oliver.

He was trained in the Virginia Naval shipyards, building and repairing U.S. Navy vessels during World War II. In 1948, he married Nettie Robinson and relocated to California, where he pursued a career in heavy construction and retried in 1985.

He was a founding member of Glendora Congregational Church in Glendora, Calif., and a member of the Operating Engineers for 53 years.

He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Oliver; three brothers, Roy Oliver, Elijah Oliver and Billy Oliver; and one sister, Elizabeth Oliver.

Surviving are his wife, Nettie Robinson Oliver; one daughter, Jamellia Kay Oliver-Aguirre of Chino Hills, Calif.; one sister, Hester Gibson Sitton of Bryson City; three nieces, including Donna Oliver of Cashiers; and one granddaughter.

James Buchanan

James "Jimmy" Lee Buchanan, 49, of Cullowhee, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, in Waynesville's Haywood Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, in Cullowhee Methodist Church Cemetery.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
