Ramsey

Ramsey

Liston Ramsey

Liston Bryan Ramsey, 82, of 498 Walnut Creek Road, Marshall died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at Clare Bridge Alterra in Arden, where he had made his home for the past 16 months. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, in the chapel of Madison Funeral Home. Burial was be in Ramsey Cemetery. Pallbearers were nieces and nephews.

Born in Madison County's Walnut community, Ramsey was salutatorian of the Marshall High School Class of 1936. He attended Mars Hill College and received an honorary doctorate degree in 1988 and served as a sergeant in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific Arena during World War II.

Perhaps more than any other politician, Ramsey convinced legislators that the state line did not end at Statesville. He was successful in securing state funds for Western North Carolina, including the Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activities Center at Western Carolina University.

Ramsey served 19 terms in the N.C. House of Representatives and was speaker of the House for four terms, from 1981 to 1988. Ramsey was the longest serving member of the N.C. House and was the only speaker to serve more than two terms.

He served on the Marshall Board of Aldermen for 12 years, was a 50-year member of the French Broad Masonic Lodge No. 292 AF&AM and a charter member of the Marshall Lions Club. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 0047 in Waynesville, a former commander of American Legion Post No. 0317 and a member of VFW Post No. 05202 in Marshall.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Florence McDevitt Ramsey, who died March 2, 2001; his father, John Morgan Ramsey; his mother, Della Lee Bryan; his stepmother, Dora Lloyd Wayne; an infant sister; and four brothers, Roy Lee, Lloyd Wayne, Clarence and John Weldon Ramsey.

Surviving are one daughter, Martha Louise Ramsey Banks of Marshall; two sisters, Marie Prichard and Grace Castelloe, both of Asheville; one stepsister, Edna Sprinkle of Asheville; seven stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, WNC Chapter, 3 Louisiana Ave., Asheville, N.C. 28806; or to the charitable or religious organization of onešs choice.


Helen Ensley

Helen Ware Ensley, 92, of Lakeland, Fla., died of leukemia Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at Highlands Lake Center in Lakeland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, G. Harry Ensley, in 1995, who was born on Cope Creek in 1904 and moved to Lakeland in 1924. They were married in 1928 and vacationed in Jackson and Haywood counties every summer except one until 1972 when they built a home on Cope Creek to become residents all summer.

Born in Griffin, Ga., on June 20, 1909, she moved to Lakeland with her family in the early 1920s and graduated from Lakeland High School in 1927. She was a bookkeeper for the Allsopp Insurance Agency from 1929 until her retirement in 1968. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lakeland.

Surviving are two sons, Harry Jr. of Lakeland and Ronald of Melbourne, Fla.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.



Tim Nicholson

Tim Nicholson, 30, of Sylva, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at his home.

Memorials may be made to his son, Zachary Nicholson, in care of Carolina Community Bank.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Chloe Sams

Chloe Morgan Sams, infant daughter of Amy Smith and Josh Sams, died Sept. 3, 2001.

Margie Henry

Margie Henry of Sylva's Willets community died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Sandra Clawson

Sandra Marie Clawson, 35, of 20 Lee Ave., Asheville, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services were held at noon Tuesday, Sept. 4, in the Patton Avenue Chapel of Groce Funeral Home. The Rev. Frank Cantrell officiated. Burial was private.

A native of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of Frank and Viola Farnsworth Clawson of Asheville. She attended Asheville High School and was a waitress at Three Brothers Restaurant.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by one brother, Paul Cecil Capps Jr. of Clinton, Ind. Memorials may be made to the family to help with expenses.

Ethel Hooper

Ethel Brown Hooper, 97, of Cullowhee's Caney Fork community, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Dr. Harold Anderson and the Rev. Joe Yelton officiated. Burial was in Hooper Cemetery of Caney Fork. Pallbearers were Matthew Chadwick, David Holt, Adam Holt, Justin Richie, Dan Richie and Peter Reich. Honorary pallbearers were Ray Chadwick, Bobby Holt and Fred Brown.

A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late M.C. and Belle Buchanan Brown and wife of Edward D. Hooper, who died in 1968. She was a member of Cullowhee Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Frances Richey of Indianapolis; one son, Harrell Hooper of Cullowhee; one sister, Emma McCavitt of Anderson, S.C.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.



Billy Howell

Billy G. Howell, 58, of Cattle Drive, Whittier, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at his residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Tom Harris and Danny Sweet officiated. Burial was in Sherrill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were J.L. Burgess, Jerry Raby, Roger Raby, Jack Bryson, Charles Cathey and James Shook.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a construction worker and a self-employed cattleman and farmer. He was a son of the late Dock Hilliard and Fetzer Sherrill Howell.

A brother and sister preceded him in death.

Surviving are three sons, Wesley Gene Howell of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Jason Crowe of Cherokee and Robert Hilliard Howell of Whittier; one sister, Peggy Jo Howell Parton of Whittier; and seven grandchildren.

Frances Blanton

Frances Dillard "Bill" Blanton, 78, of Green Fiddlers Lane, Balsam, died unexpectedly Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Ray McCall officiated. Burial was in Balsam Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were James Edward Blanton, John Washington Blanton, Lowell Rhoads, Carl Coward Jr., Nathan Hall and Shaun Nunley.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired self-employed handyman. He was a son of the late John Washington Sr. and Emmaline Potts Blanton.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Daniel W. Blanton, and one sister, Katie Marie Blanton.

Surviving are one sister, June Coward of Balsam; and one brother, John Washington Blanton Jr.



Marshall Hall

Marshall Hall, 66, of Sutton Branch Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in Old Savannah Cemetery. Pallbearers were Danny Buchanan, Corbet Hall, Johnny Allison, Eddie Buchanan, Steve Brooks and Ric Jones.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired carpenter for Carroll Buchanan Construction Co. He was a son of Edith Buchanan Hall of Sylva and the late Perry Jason Hall.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are two sons, Michael Dean Hall of Sylva and Danny Hall of Franklin; three sisters, Louise Johnson and Betty Buchanan, both of Sylva, and Sue Sudduth of Greer, S.C.; one brother, Tommy Joe Hall of Easley, S.C.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.



Hilton Searcy

Hilton B. Searcy, 71, of Whittier's Conley's Creek community, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, at Conley's Creek Freewill Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Jeff Waldroup officiated.

He was born in Ohio, was a longtime resident of Mississippi and had lived in Swain County for the past 10 years. He retired after 41 years of service with the Mississippi Valley Gas Co. in Greenwood, Miss. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during the Korean conflict.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Evelyn Carter Searcy; one daughter, Kathy M. Searcy of Thomasville, Ga.; two sons, Don Hilton Searcy of West Point, Miss., and Jon Mark Searcy of Thomasville; two brothers, Woodrow Searcy of Athens, Texas, and Clyde Searcy of Nashville, Tenn.; and one sister, Maye Strange of Sharon, Conn.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
