The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to readers.

When possible, obituaries should be sent to the Herald from the funeral home. Information received will be placed in our standard obituary format.

We publish names of all of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

A brief history of the deceased is included. We include information on their employment, as well as professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

Richard Mashburn Mashburn

Richard Mashburn

Richard H. "Bo" Mashburn, 74, of Smithfield, Va., died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at his home.

A combined memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. tonight (Thursday), followed by visitation at Riverside Funeral Home in Newport News, Va.

He was born July 9, 1928, in Cullowhee to Avery Mashburn and the late Lydia Higdon Mashburn. He moved to Newport News, Va., after high school to work for C&O Railroad until he retired in the 1980s and moved to Smithfield, Va.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and member of Smithfield Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his father, are his wife, Eva Martin Mashburn; two daughters, Karen Robinson of Mechanicsville, Va., and Sherry Lovelace of Greensboro, Ga.; three sisters, Lowaine Wilson of Lake Junaluska and Harriet Parker and Arbra Gibson, both of Cullowhee.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.



Moqueta Crawford

Moqueta Tucker Crawford, 91, of Sylva, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at Cullowhee Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Vickery and the Rev. Tonya Vickery officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Homer Holden, Jim Evans, John Lee, Chris Tucker, Phill Sanders, Joey McGuffin and Legon Gibson.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the wife of the late John Crawford and daughter of the late John Milas and Hattie Moody Tucker.

Surviving are two sons, Jack N. Crawford of Tampa, Fla., and Jimmie Crawford of Athens, Ga.; one sister, Jimmie Sutton of Sylva; one brother, Jennings Tucker of South Carolina; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

Lillie Foxx

Lillie Queen Foxx, 85, of Chaparral Drive, Sylva, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at Lovedale Baptist Church, of which she was a member. Jackie Drew and the Revs. Mike Farmer and Cecil Frady officiated. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.

She was a native of Jackson County and daughter of the late Rev. Cleve and Lessie Shelton Queen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R. Clyde Foxx, and one son, Jimmy Foxx.

Surviving are her son, Robert C. "Bob" Foxx of the home; one daughter, Becky Foxx of the home; two sisters, Betty Sue Moore of Cullowhee and Eva Broom of Pickens, S.C.; and three brothers, Glen Queen of Cullowhee, Dewey Queen of Sylva and Kit Queen of High Point.

Charlotte Blee

Charlotte L. Blee of Big Ridge Road, Cashiers, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, in Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at Cashiers United Methodist Church. The Revs. David Beam and Walter Kalaf officiated. A second memorial service will be held this fall in Tallahassee, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Organ Trust Fund of Trinity United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1086, Tallahassee, Fla. 32302.

Raymond Bradley

Raymond Edward Bradley, 56, of Cherokee, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2, at Straight Fork Baptist Church. The Revs. James "Bo" Parris and Charles Ray Ball officiated. Burial was in Bradley Family Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, he was a self-employed basketmaker and logger. He was a son of the late Henry and Helen Bradley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James Bradley.

Surviving are three sons, Eddie Ray Bradley, James Henry Bradley and Mason Fredrick Driver; three daughters, Marlena Francine Berry, Melanie Fay Bradley and Cindy West; four brothers, Morgan Bradley, Walter Bradley, Bob Reed and Don Bradley; one sister, Carol Bradley; and 15 grandchildren.

Rebecca Wilson

Rebecca "Becky" Susan Cannon Wilson, 78, of Dillsboro, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, after a period of declining health.

Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, at Parris Cemetery with a memorial service following at 3:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Sylva.

A native of Jackson County, she graduated from Dillsboro Elementary School, Sylva High School and Greensboro College. She began her career at Jackson County Bank in 1944. In 1963, she moved to Jackson County Savings and Loan as the only employee for several years.

She continued with and in the growth of Jackson County Savings and Loan as chairman of the board until two years after her retirement, remaining as vice chairman. She was the daughter of the late Montriville Byrd and Mary Alice Fisher Cannon.

Survivors are her husband of 53 years, Walter Wade Wilson, former mayor of Dillsboro; one son, Walter Wade Wilson Jr. of Sylva; one daughter, Susan Owen of Dillsboro; two granddaughters; and two stepgrandsons.

Mary Lawrence

Mary Gaidos Lawrence, 81, of Waynesville, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The Rev. Allen Blanton officiated. Burial was in Garrett Hillcrest Cemetery.

A native of Pennsylvania, she lived in Asheville for 18 years, in Sylva for five years, then in Waynesville from 1968 until her death. She was a member of Waynesville First Baptist Church, an Army veteran of World War II, First Gold Star Mother recipient in Waynesville and a member of VFW Post 5052. She was a secretary for Holland Furnace Co. and a social worker for the Family and Children's Service in Asheville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Anna Mazur Gaidos; and one son, James Lawrence Jr.

Surviving are her husband, James Loyd Lawrence; one son, Edward Lawrence III of Galax, Va.; two daughters, Mary Ann Frye of Sylva and Maxine Steppleton of Waynesville; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Ralph Davis

Ralph Davis Sr., 95, of Sylva's Old Settlement community, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Dan Stiles officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native of Buncombe County, he lived in Jackson County for the past 60 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and member of Loves Chapel Methodist Church. He was the son of the late Stover Burton and Dixie Reeves Davis.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Effie Barron Davis.

Surviving are one son, Ralph Davis Jr. of Webster; four sisters, Lena Klenko of Winston-Salem, Lottie Pruett of Asheville, Emily Shaver of Clemmons and Stovie Pitts of Franklin; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Betty Lossiah

Betty Long Lossiah, 99, of Cherokee, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, after a period of declining health.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2, in Lossiah Family Cemetery. The Rev. James "Bo" Parris officiated.

A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, she was a basketmaker and member of Qualla Arts and Crafts. She also worked in the Cherokee Indian Village.

She was the daughter of the late Garfield and Sally Long and wife of the late Tom Lossiah.

She was preceded in death by one son, Julius George, and two daughters, Mary Jane Lossie and Anna Mae Taylor.

Surviving are two sons, Tom Lossiah and William Lossiah, both of Cherokee; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.

Suzanna Lossiah

Suzanna Lossiah, 58, of Edneyville, formerly of Cherokee, died unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, in a Hendersonville hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, in Big Witch Baptist Church. Burial followed in Lossiah George Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, she had been a resident of Edneyville for the past eight years. Daughter of the late Dave and Lyda Wilnoty Lossiah, she was a member of Big Witch Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, William Candy Lossiah and Leander Lossiah.

Surviving are two daughters, Tina Lossiah and Jacqueline Corral, both of Edneyville; two sisters, Linda and Luzene Lossiah, both of Cherokee; four brothers, Sambo Lossiah, Moses Lossiah and Paul Lossiah, all of Cherokee, and John Lossiah of Cuba, New Mexico; and eight grandchildren.

Clifford Hooper

Dr. Clifford Harold Hooper, 81, of Arden, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at Asheville Solace Center.

No services are planned.

A son of D. Mont and Mattie Henson Hooper, he was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy.

Surviving are two sons, James C. Hooper of Paw Paw, Mich., and Mark C. Hooper of Suisum City, Calif.; one sister, Jacqueline H. Tuttle of Asheville; and three grandsons.

David Crowe

David F. "Dave" Crowe, 89, of Roscoe Lewis Road, Little Savannah community, Sylva, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at his home after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Little Savannah Baptist Church. The Revs. Roy Burnette and Kent Lowdermilk officiated. Burial was in Stillwell Cemetery with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army and the Sylva American Legion Post 104.

He moved to Jackson County in May 1976 following his retirement. He was a son of the late Dr. Samuel James Crowe and Susie Childs Barrow Crowe. He was born in Athens, Ga., where he attended the University of Georgia. He lived in Baltimore until 1932, before attending the Augusta Military Academy in Virginia.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was assigned to a medical hospital ship platoon on the USS Lejeune and Santa Rosa, traveling from New York to France, England and Karachi, India, picking up wounded servicemen. His rank was medical first sergeant. After serving in several VA hospitals, he retired from the VA Hospital in Oteen as a pharmacist. He was a member of Little Savannah Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Samuel J. Crowe.

Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Doris Frizzell Crowe; one daughter, Sue Walters of Toronto, Ontario; four sons, David B. Crowe of Macon, Ga., David F. Crowe of St. Mary's, Ga., Samuel J. Crowe of Snellville, Ga., and Jack Crowe of Unicoi, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two stepchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

James Webb

James Lloyd Webb, 67, of Lynn, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at his home after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at McFarland Funeral Chapel in Tryon. The Revs. Julius Grant and Don Grant officiated. Burial was in Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbus.

Born in Macon County, he had lived in Jackson County. For the past 49 years, he lived in Polk County.

He was employed with Connestee Falls Property Owners Association in Brevard and was a member of the Church of God.

He was preceded in death by one son, James Ray of Tryon; his parents, the Rev. George and Elise Webb; two brothers, the Rev. John Webb and David Webb; and two sisters, Flora Mae Webb Jenkins and Frances Webb.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Frankie Holland Webb; one brother, Ernest Webb of West Union, S.C.; and two sisters, Gertrude Webb Coggins of Cullowhee and Pauline Webb McConnell of Columbia, S.C.



Chris Painter

Christopher Alan Painter, 33, of Sylva's Ashe Settlement community, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at Mission-St. Joseph's Health System.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. today (Thursday) at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. The Revs. Mike Moore and Earl Holden will officiate. The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a cook and chef, an Air Force veteran and a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Grady L. Painter and Dan Bishop.

Surviving are his parents, L.G. and Helen Bishop Painter; one sister, Stephanie Stevens of Sylva; one daughter, Chelsea Marie Painter of Cullowhee; one son, Colton D. Painter of Cullowhee; grandmothers, Fannie B. Painter and Bonnie Bishop, both of Sylva.

Annie Farmer of East Sylva Circle died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Burl Henson

Burl E. Henson, 80, of Sylva's Addie community died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002.

The family will receive friends 4-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Buff Creek Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Allison "Betty" Henson; his parents, Lawrence and Iva Lee Henson; and one brother, Ralph Henson.

Surviving are two sons, Jody Henson of Nevada and Gary Henson of Michigan; four daughters, Betty Joe Henson-Murphy of Florida, Gayle Charbeneau of Michigan, Jean Henson-Scott of Georgia and Julie VanHusen of Florida; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Roy Mills

Roy Mills, 62, of Holden Trailer Park, Cullowhee, died unexpectedly.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Ernest Ammons, L.H. Mathis and Earl Holden will officiate. Burial will be in Hooper Cemetery on Caney Fork.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Elihue and Lemer Mae McFalls Mills. He was a maintenance worker with High Hampton Inn.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Randy and Charles Mills; and one brother, Manuel Mills. Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Lou Jane Shook Mills; two daughters, Gloria and Kathy Mills of Cullowhee; two sons, Roy Lee Mills of Salem, S.C., and Ricky Mills of Westminster, S.C.; four sisters, Opal Bryson of Tuckasegee, Diane Shook of Cullowhee, Evelyn Hoxit of Sylva and Helen Snyder of Whittier; and three grandchildren.

The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at the funeral home.



Juanita Moore

Juanita McIntosh Moore of 125 Logan Ave., Asheville, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002.
