Edith George
Edith C. George, 75, of Cherokee's Big Witch community, died Saturday,
Aug. 30, 2003, at her residence after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1, in Old Antioch
Baptist Church. The Revs. Danny Little and Denny Crowe officiated. Burial
was in George family cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, she was the daughter of
the late John and Mary Bigwitch Crowe. She was a member of Old Antioch
Baptist Church and retired from The Cherokees.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph George; one son, Simon
George; and one daughter, Mary Hornbuckle.
Surviving are five sons, the Rev. Denny Crowe, Albert Crowe, Joseph
George, Shon George and Herbert George, all of Cherokee; one brother,
Charles "Scar" Crowe of Cherokee; 15 grandchildren; and 14
great-grandchildren.

Cecil Terry
Cecil Troy Terry Jr., 74, of Sylva, died Monday, Aug. 25, at Clay County
Care Center after a period of declining health.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, in the chapel
of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Robert E. Manthey and John Nichol officiated.
He was a native of Norfolk, Va., had lived in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.,
Murphy and was most recently a resident of Sylva. He was a retired Merchant
seaman, having served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
He was a son of the late Cecil Troy Terry and Alice Sheffield.
Surviving are two daughters, Vicki Terry Green of Brasstown and Linda
C. Witherwax of North Lauderdale, Fla.; one son, James M. Wilson of
Coconut Creek, Fla.; one brother; the Rev. Robert E. Manthey of Frederick,
Md.; and five grandchildren.

Lucile Edwards

Lucile Reed Edwards, 80, of Kinston, died at her home on Colony Place
on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at First Baptist
Church of Kinston. Dr. Dale Clark officiated.
A native of Jackson County, she attended public schools in Sylva and
graduated from Western Carolina University. She received her master's
degree from East Carolina University and worked many years with the
Baptist orphanages in Kinston and Thomasville. She retired from Lenior
Community College.
She was a member and lifetime deacon of First Baptist Church of Kinston.
She was the first woman and Paul Harris Fellow of the Kinston Rotary
Club. She was an 18-gallon donor to the blood bank and was a member
of Delta Kappa Gamma.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Bertha Henson Reed;
her husband, Henry Edwards; and one brother, Bud Reed.
Surviving is one sister, Ethel Reed Buck of St. Augustine, Fla.

Caroline Bell
Caroline Crowell Bell, 84, of Spencer, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003,
at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Private graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. today (Thursday)
followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist
Church in Spencer.
Born Aug. 30, 1919, at her home at 811 Fourth Street in Spencer, she
was the daughter of Ollie Blume Crowell and Marvin E. Crowell. She was
educated in the Spencer school system, graduating from Spencer High
School in 1936. She attended Salisbury Business College in 1937 and
earned her bachelor of arts degree from Catawba College in 1941. Later
in life, she received continuing education at Davidson College and Duke
University.
She was employed by the Mecklenburg, Iredell and Rowan county school
systems for 18 years as an elementary school teacher. She volunteered
as a Cub Scout den leader and a Sunday school teacher. She was a member
of Central United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by one son, Marvin Edward Bell.
Surviving are her husband of 64 years, the Rev. Roy Edison Bell Sr.;
three sons, Roy Edison Bell Jr. of Concord, David Crowell Bell of Raleigh
and John Clyde Bell of Tampa, Fla.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

United Methodist Church, 200 Fourth Street, Spencer, N.C. 28159.

Patricia Brooks
Patricia Ann Brooks, 50, long-time resident of Sedro-Woolley, Wash.,
died of cancer Saturday, July 12, 2003, at United General Hospital in
Sedro-Woolley.
Graveside services were held at Lyman Cemetery at 2 p.m. Wednesday,
July 16. Pastor Leo Meyer of Calvary Baptist Church officiated.
She was born Dec. 23, 1952, in Sylva, daughter of Jean Young Queen of
Hamilton, Wash., and the late Troy Queen. She lived in North Carolina
until 1959 when the family moved to Lyman.
She attended school in Lyman and Sedro-Woolley, graduating from Sedro-Woolley
High School in 1972.
She married Richard Brooks in Lyman on Jan. 2, 1973. They traveled and
made their home all over the world while he served in the U.S. Marine
Corps. In 1992 they settled in Skagit County.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Alfred Queen.
Surviving are her husband of 30 years, Richard Brooks; one daughter,
Jessica Lynn Brooks of Sedro-Woolley; one son, Richard Jason Brooks
of Sedro-Woolley; one brother, Bruce Queen of Hamilton; and three grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Lyman Cemetery Fund.

Hazel Rohde
Hazel C. Rohde, 87, of Winter Haven, Fla., died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003,
at Winter Haven Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Crisp-Coon
Funeral Chapel. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery.
A native of Sylva, she was the daughter of Elbert Hall Coward and Irone
Ingabow Queen Coward.
A housewife, she was a charter member of Parkland Baptist Church. She
was a member of Willowbrook Woman's Golf Association and Winter Haven
Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Rohde Jr., who died
in 1990.
Surviving are one son, Paul "Ed" Rohde III of Winter Haven;
two daughters, Marilyn Buchanan of Melbourne, Fla., and Linda Maxwell
of Kingsport, Tenn.; and one brother, Ray Coward of Sylva.

Thomas Myers
Thomas Kelly Myers, 74, of Greenville, S.C., formerly of Cherokee,
died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Bethabara
Baptist Church. The Rev. Randy Parsons officiated. Burial was in Birdtown
Cemetery.
A native of Cherokee, he was the son of the late Alvin and Nancy Ellen
Griffin Myers. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean
Conflict. He was of the Christian faith, a journeyman carpenter and
a gifted musician.
Surviving are four daughters, Tommie J. Myers Cersosimo of Lake Panasoffkee,
Fla., Katie E. Myers Parrish of Croome, Fla., Kelly C. Myers Lovett
of Ridge Manner, Fla., and Nancy Myers of Cherokee; two sons, Thomas
Kelly Myers II of Bryson City and Daniel Robert Estes Myers of Cherokee;
three sisters, Viola Myers of Greenville, Etella Teague of Lakeland,
Fla., and Mildred Smith of Cherokee; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

James "Jimmy" Lee Buchanan, 49, of Cullowhee, died Friday,
Aug. 29, 2003, in Waynesville's Haywood Regional Medical Center.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, in Cullowhee
Methodist Church Cemetery.
