Bess WestermanBess M. Westerman, 64, of Sylva, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, at her daughter's residence in Bradenton, Fla.Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 25, in Ohio. The Rev. Kenneth Wessler officiated. Burial was in Old Mission Cemetery. She was born in Etna Green, Ind., to Murrell "Buck" II and the late Geraldine Kelley Riley. She married James Westerman in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, on Aug. 17, 1958. A 1954 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, she was a homemaker. Before moving from Upper Sandusky, she was affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Warpole Chapter #366 OES, where she served as a Star Point Ruth officer. Surviving, in addition to her father and husband, are a son, Joseph of Bradenton; two daughters, Jodi Bruegger of Sylva and Amy Teeter of Bradenton; three brothers, Michael Riley of Shaker Heights, Ohio, Patrick Riley of Sandusky, Ohio, and Murrell Riley III of Adrian, Mich.; five sisters, Sue Nelson and Deborah Graham, both of Upper Sandusky, Sarah Wayland of Frisco, Texas, Johanna Hull of Toledo, Ohio, and Rosalie Miller of Minneapolis. Sharon JonesSharon Jones, 25, of Cabe Road, Sylva, went to her heavenly home Wednesday, Aug. 23, in Mission-St. Joseph's Health System after a brief illness.She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and a 1993 graduate of Smoky Mountain High School. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Jim and Lillie Deitz Cabe, and her paternal grandparents, Roy and Swannie Mills Jones. She was a daughter of John Ray and Jimmie Sue Cabe Jones of Sylva. Surviving, in addition to her parents, are a sister, Jennifer Rae Jones of Sylva; special grandmother, Mary Girlie Jones; special brothers, Johnny and Jane Buchanan, Levi and Samantha; special aunt and uncle, Bruce and Sandie Jones; special aunt, Evelyn Cooper; special sister, Kathy Buchanan and her husband, Ronnie; dear friend, Rebecca Crowe; uncles and aunts, Noel and Donna Jones, Guy and Jessie Jones; aunts Mary Anne and Alvin Hall, Billie Jo and Ed Buchanan, Betty and Allinee Wilkes, Mae and Earl Holden; and a great host of friends. She was loved by all who knew her. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Ochre Hill Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Clifford Parker, Roger Millsaps and J.D. Grant officiated. Burial was in East Fork Cemetery. Pallbearers were Scott Buchanan, Dustin Buchanan, Jason Buchanan, Bill Jones, Chris Broom, Tim Crowe, Chad Crowe and Randy Deitz. Robert VellaRobert Vella, 59, of Enchanted Forest Drive, Sylva, died Thursday, Aug. 24, in Tsali Care Nursing Center after a brief illness.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Father James Cahill officiating. Burial was in Keener Cemetery. A native of New York, he had lived in Jackson County for the past four years. He was employed at Harrah's Cherokee Casino and was a son of Joseph and Catherine Moore Vella. Surviving are a sister, Claudia Vella of Sylva; and a brother, Joseph Vella of Nalcrest, Fla. Wanda MaesWanda Lou Maes, 66, of Marysville, Wash., died Monday, Aug. 7, at her home.Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at Lyman Cemetery in Washington. She was born April 15, 1934, in Cowards, the daughter of Mark and Beulah Woods Melton. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Curtis Melton; and her grandparents, John and Arlecia Hooper Melton, formerly of Caney Fork. Surviving are four sons, Manuel, Michael, Anthony and Philip; two daughters, Annette and Arlecia; two sisters, Phyllis Yvonne Trial and Arbie Evadean Adams; a brother, Gary W. Melton; and two grandsons. Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley, Wash., was in charge of arrangements. William GreeneWilliam A. "Butch" Greene, 82, of 235 HawkChase, Ginger Lake Subdivision, Orangeburg, S.C., died Saturday, Aug. 26.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Polewczak officiated. Burial was in Sunnyside Cemetery with military honors. A native of Orangeburg County and a former resident of Whittier for many years, he was a son of the late Roy J. Greene and Elizabeth McCarthy Greene. He retired as owner of Greene Fuel Co. A graduate of Clemson University, he was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of major. He was a Purple Heart recipient and a prisoner of war. He was named "Orangeburg Businessman of the Year," served as a former president of the Orangeburg Jaycees and was a past commander of the VFW. Surviving are his wife, Mary Hydrick Greene; four daughters, Meg Roberts of Lexington, S.C., Pat Yongue or Orangeburg, Celia Grimes of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and Dorothy Benson of James Island, S.C.; one son, William A. Green Jr. of Seattle; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. David CabeDavid Lee Cabe, 75, of Darrington, Wash., died Saturday, Aug. 26, in Arlington, Wash.Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Mountainview Baptist Church in Darrington. Pastors Mack Cook, Les Hagen and Jim Alexander will officiate. Burial will follow at Darrington Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 1, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Weller Funeral Home of Arlington. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at Sylva's Calvary Baptist Church. The Revs. Dennis Burrell, Hazen Pangle and Frank Brooks will officiate. A native of Sylva, he was born June 14, 1925, to Loney and Lillie Hall Cabe. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the Koiner DE/331. He retired from the Summit Timber Co. after 27 years of service. He was a member and past deacon of Mountainview Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Loney A. Cabe Jr. and Hammilton J. Cabe; and two sisters, Janette Childers and Ruth Buchanan. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Janet; three sons, Michael L. Cabe, James Alvin Cabe and Wallace David Cabe, all of Darrington; two brothers, Grover H. Cabe of Sylva and Franklin Cabe of Forks, Wash.; one sister, Faye Jones of Franklin; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
