Hyatt

Hyatt

Wimpy Hyatt

William "Wimpy" Hyatt, 82, of Dillsboro Road, Sylva, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Eddie Stillwell and Bo Brown officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Kenny Robinson, Ben Robinson, Josh Robinson, Caleb Robinson, Randy Hyatt and Brandon Coggins.

A native of Swain County, he lived in Jackson County most of his life. He barbered in Sylva for more than 60 years, and for nearly 40 years he dressed up as Santa Claus for the town and churches.

The Hyatts served as foster parents for 33 children placed for adoption. He was a member of Wilkesdale Baptist Church, Woodmen of the World and was one of Sylva's "Brothers of the Bush" for the centennial celebration.

During and following World War II, he wrote a column for The Sylva Herald called "GI Chatter" providing news of local servicemen. He was a son of the late John Ransom Hyatt and Maude Dills Hyatt Robinson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Effie Carson Hyatt; one son, Robert Hyatt; and two brothers, Henry Hyatt and Harrison Robinson.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda Minter of Mooresville; one son, Larry Hyatt of Macon, Ga.; three brothers, Gentry Hyatt of Barboursville, W.Va., and Hoover and Geter Robinson, both of Sylva; two sisters, Lois Robinson Sutton of Sylva and Lucy Robinson Parker of Gastonia; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.


Ike Tooni

Ike Tooni, 75 of Cherokee's Painttown community, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at Acquoni Baptist Church. The Rev. Robert Christopher and Ray Kinsland officiated. Burial was at Ike Tooni Cemetery. A native of Jackson County, he was a retired construction worker. He was a son of the late Larch and Agnes Wilnoty Tooni.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie Hornbuckle Tooni; and one stepson, Ernest Hornbuckle.

Surviving are three daughters, Marion Teesateskie of Painttown community and Helen McCoy and Lily Smith of Cherokee's Birdtown community; three sisters, Dinah George, Rachel Reed and Eva Reed, all of Cherokee; one brother, Stanley Tooni; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Rev. Hubert Bryson

The Rev. Hubert Clingman Bryson, 84, of Blanton Branch Road, Sylva, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at his residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The. Revs. James Parham, O.J. Skidmore and Lloyd Allen officiated. Burial was in Greenhill Cemetery, Waynesville. Pallbearers were grandsons Gregory H. Freeman, Michael Bryson and Chris Bryson; son-in-law Howell Freeman Jr.; Scott Shelton; and Dean Paris.

A native of Jackson County, he was a retired Baptist minister having served at Johns Creek, New Hope, Greens Creek, Barkers Creek and Speedwell Baptist churches in Jackson County; and Pleasant Balsam and Green Valley Baptist churches in Haywood County. He held revivals in other states and was very talented in music, voice and string instruments.

He was a son of the late Thomas Clingman and Laura Palestine Henson Bryson.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Nellie June McDonald Bryson; three daughters, Judy Kay Bryson of Sylva and Barbara Bryson Freeman and Carol Hope Bryson Allen, both of Waynesville; one son, Kenny George Bryson of Sylva; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.



Boyd Littlejohn

Boyd Littlejohn, 79 of Cherokee's Wolftown community, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at Bethebara Baptist Church in Birdtown. The Revs. Mitchell Smiley, Denny Crowe and Ray Kinsland officiated. Burial was in the family cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Levi Oocumma; mother, Lewee Crowe; one sister, Alice Oocumma; and one brother, Henson Littlejohn.

Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Kina Littlejohn; two sons, Moses Oocumma and Henry Littlejohn; three daughters, Annie Oocumma, Peggy "Dolly" Littlejohn and Ahli-Sha Littlejohn; four stepchildren, Joe, Norma, Clint and Susan Oocumma; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nine stepgrandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Sherman London

Sherman Thadies London, 86, of Waynesville, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at the chapel of Garrett Funeral Home in Waynesville. Burial was at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Members of the Waynesville VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Haywood Post 47 served as pallbearers. Grandsons served as honorary pallbearers.

A native of Waynesville, he retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation's Bridge Division. He was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, received the Purple Heart, Marksmen and Rifle Honors and numerous Silver and Bronze Stars.

He was a son of the late Riley Lorenzo and Martha Jane Pruett London.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruth Lance, Vinnie Keiff and Minnie London; and two brothers, Vernon "Speedy" London and Harvey Lee London.

Surviving are his wife, Doris London; one daughter, Wilma Jean London of Clyde; three sons, James Thad London of Sylva, Charles Robert London of Waynesville and Steve Michael London of Cruso; one sister, Lottie Rathbone of Waynesville; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Michael Kellum

Michael Sean Buchanan Kellum, 20, of Clarkrange, Tenn., died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, in Gunter Cemetery in Whittier. A native of Harriman, Tenn., he was employed at F.F.M. in Monterey, Tenn.

Surviving are his father, James Buchanan of North Carolina; mother and stepfather, Brenda Gail Gunter Kellum and Thomas J. "Bob" of Clarkrange; one brother, Steve Buchanan of Texas; one stepbrother, Ronnie Kellum of Alabama; three sisters, Angela Sitton of Clarkrange, Stacy Scott and Jeannie Kellum, both of Pennsylvania; one stepsister, Shelea Bass of Alabama; maternal grandparents, Larry and Betty Gunter of Whittier; and maternal great-grandmother, Julia Gunter of Whittier.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.



Ollie Reed

Ollie Reed, 52, of Cherokee's Wolftown community, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at her home following a long illness.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Cherokee Pentecostal Holiness Church. The Revs. Betty Drake, Bobby Benson and Alvin Woodruff officiated. Burial was in Reed Family Cemetery. Pallbearers were Samuel Tiger Jr., Leonard Long, Bobby Bradley, Scott Welch, Michael Pheasant and William Dennis Reed Jr.

A lifelong resident of Cherokee, she was the proprietor of Reed Crafts. She was employed at Cherokee Elementary School for 29 years and an active member of Cherokee Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she was the treasurer and primary Sunday school teacher. She was preceded in death by her father, Samuel W. Reed.

Surviving are her mother, Lucinda B. Reed of Cherokee; three sons, Samuel Farrell Reed, Luke Kerry Locust Sr. and Benjamin Locust, all of Cherokee; two brothers, William Dennis Reed Sr. and Robert Bruce Reed, both of Cherokee; six sisters, Mary Grauman of Deer River, Minn., Linda Davis of Weaverville, Bessie Welch, Matilda Calhoun, Iva Gentry and Julia Lossiah, all of Cherokee; and four grandchildren.

Donations may be made to Cherokee Cancer Support Group.
