Stephen ConlinStephen G. Conlin, 55, of Travis Road, Cullowhee, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at his residence.Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at Cullowhee Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Jeffrey and Tonya Vickery officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Matt Ellsworth, Peter McNeely, Jay Carland, Cayle Aldridge, Chris Wittekind and Dale Wike. Honorary pallbearer was Joe David Hall.

A native of Syracuse, N.Y., he lived in Jackson County for the past 24 years. He was director of student leadership at Southwestern Community College. He was the son of the late Glenn and Lillian Hutchins Conlin.
Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Carol Minarick Conlin; one daughter, Jenni Marie Hardin of Pensacola, Fla.; two sons, Mark Christopher Conlin of Webster and Scott Anthony Conlin of Cullowhee; and four grandchildren. George ZacharyGeorge Robert "Robby" Zachary Jr., 35, of Highlands, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2002.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, in the chapel of Bryant Funeral Home in Highlands. The Rev. Walter Wilson officiated. Burial was in Evitt Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jimmy Allmond, Toby Barnes, Charles Baty, Doug Keener, James Plemmings, Brantley Potts, Jody Zachary and Tubby Zachary. Honorary pallbearers were James Manley, Gary Dalton, Jason Shoemaker, Travis Troll, Tommy McCall, Kenny Jordan and Wilbur Lands. A native of Macon County, he was a son of Brenda Mae Speed of Otto and the late George Robert Zachary Sr. He was employed by Allmond Waterproofing. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one sister, Theresa Ann Zachary of Highlands; one brother, Christopher Zachary of Satulah; stepfather, Douglas Stacey Keener of Franklin; one stepsister, Judy Keener of Stanley; and one stepbrother, Doug Keener of Franklin. Carl ThomassonCarl A. Thomasson, 81, of Whittier, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, in Harris Regional Hospital.A private graveside service was held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, in Campground Cemetery. A native of Swain County and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a member of the congregation of Kingdom Hall Jehovah Witness. A self-employed carpenter, he was the son of the late John and Olie Mae Sellers Thomasson and husband of the late Leverne and Ibeuria Thomasson. Surviving are two sisters, Aileen T. Lib BuchananLib Lupo Buchanan, 62, of Riverbend Road, Sylva, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after an extended illness.Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at Locust Field Baptist Church. The Revs. Charles Carnes and Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of Edith Edna Ensley Lupo of Sylva and the late Floyd Lupo. She was a cook at Smokey Mountain Grill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Buchanan. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are three daughters, Judy Tolley, Stephanie Tolley and Brenda Buchanan, all of Sylva; one son, Roger Buchanan, of Sylva; three brothers, James Lupo of Sylva, Eddie Lupo of Cleveland, Tenn., and Ray Lupo of Charleston, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Allrid, USAF-retired, 82, of Casselberry, Fla., died Aug. 25, 2002.Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Carmichael-Hemperley Chapel. The Rev. Robby Smith officiated. Burial was in Sherwood Memorial Park with full military honors. A native of Fulton County, Ga., he served in Europe in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a civilian auditor for the U.S. Department of Defense for 30 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.B. and Pearl Allrid; and two brothers, James B. Allrid Jr. and Richard F. Allrid. Surviving are his wife, Agnes M. Allrid; one daughter, Kathleen Allrid Jardine of Sylva; two sisters, Louise Allrid and Anne Reynolds, both of Fayetteville; and three brothers, William T. Allrid, Morrow Allrid and Robert L. Charles McFallsCharles Eldon "Mac" McFalls, 54, of Mixon Road, St. Helena Island, S.C., formerly of Jackson County, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at his brother's residence after an extended illness.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at Fall Cliff Baptist Church. The Rev. Tommy Holden officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by the Franklin American Legion/VFW. A native of Jackson County, he had lived in St. Helena Island, S.C., for the past 15 years. He was a Marine veteran of the Vietnam era. He was a member of St. Helena Baptist Church and was a commercial builder superintendent with Construction Association of Bluffton, S.C. He was a son of the late George and Marie Coggins McFalls. Surviving are his wife of 10 years, Flona Losey McFalls; one daughter, Kathi Lowther of Ridgeland; one son, Michael McFalls of Jordan, Utah; three sisters, Ellen Mathews of Centraila, Wash., and Evelyn Mathis and Aileen Moss, both of Cullowhee; three brothers, George Edwin McFalls of Bryson City, and Ellith and Joe McFalls, both of Cullowhee; and four grandchildren. Karen WinterKaren Louise Winter, 51, of Franklin, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, after a period of declining health in an Asheville nursing center.Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Ruth Ann Leblanc officiated. Burial was at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at Fairview Memorial Gardens. A native of Pittsburgh and a former resident of Spring Hill, Fla., she had been a resident of Macon County for two years. She was a real estate agent and a member of the Florida Board of Realtors. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Capozzi. Surviving are her husband, Richard Winter of Franklin; her mother, Elizabeth Capozzi of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and one brother, Michael Capozzi of Pittsburgh.
Doyle GunterDoyle W. Gunter, 71, of Whirlwind Drive, Whittier, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at Mission-St. Joseph's Health System after an extended illness.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at Hyatts Chapel Baptist Church. The Revs. Steve Gunter, Steve Webb and Tom Harris officiated. Burial was in Gunter Cemetery. Area ministers served as pallbearers. A native of Swain County, he had lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was the owner and operator of the Reservation IGA Foodliner and a member of Hyatts Chapel Baptist Church, where he served as deacon chairman, Sunday school teacher, choir member and supported and participated in missions. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of Korea and the son of Florence Phillips Gunter of Whittier and the late Oscar Gunter. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 46 years, Margaret Peterson Gunter; two sons, the Rev. Steve Gunter and Rick Gunter, both of Whittier; three sisters, Linda Parris of Canton and Hazel Young and Juanita Turpin, both of Whittier; and six grandchildren. "Buck" Rice, 68, of Monte Vista Road, Cashiers, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, in Highlands-Cashiers Hospital after an extended illness.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Cashiers Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Johnny Norris and Art Fowler officiated. Burial was in Lower Zachary Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Edd and Gracie Burrell Rice. He was a retired self-employed caretaker. He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Rice, and three infant siblings. Surviving are two sisters, Junie McCall and Betty Henson, and two brothers, William Ervin Rice and Lloyd Rice, all of Cashiers. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. William HicksWilliam "Bill" Hicks, 54, of Stillwell Branch Road, Cherokee, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at his residence.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Rock Springs Baptist Church. The Rev. Bobby Watts will officiate. Burial will be in Hicks Family Cemetery. The body was taken to the church at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, by Crisp Funeral Home, Bryson City, to await the hour of service. A native of Cherokee, he was a son of Oscar Hicks of Gastonia and the late Rachel Long Hicks. He was a self-employed carpenter and member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian Fishing Team. Surviving, in addition to his father, are one son, Billy Jack Hicks of Cherokee; two daughters, Tonya Hicks and Candice Hicks, both of Cherokee; five brothers, Arthur Hicks, Oscar Hicks Jr., Butch Long, Johnny Hicks, all of Cherokee, and Steve Hicks of Gastonia; three sisters, Bernadine George, Treva Reed and Charlotte Saunooke, all of Cherokee; and two grandchildren.
Nancy WebsterNancy Walker Webster, 74, of Cherokee's Yellowhill community, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, in a Cherokee hospital.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Church of Latter Day Saints. Leon Jenks and John Parker will officiate. A native of Philadelphia, she lived and worked in the Chicago area for most of her life, returning to Cherokee 11 years ago. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was retired as a private duty nurse at various hospitals in the Chicago area. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Minda Bradley Kahdot. She was preceded in death by one son, Walter Jack Walker; and one sister, Selene Kahdot. Surviving are four daughters, Selene Pheasant, Mary Long, Debbie Taylor and Jackie McCoy, all of Cherokee; one son, Frank Walker of Cherokee; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.
