Ruth DavisRuth M. "Mawie" Davis, 57, of Bradley Loop Road, Cherokee, died Saturday, Aug. 19, in Park Ridge Hospital.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, in Whittier Missionary Baptist Church. The Revs. Larry Nations, Robert "Bob" Christopher and Dan Lambert officiated. Burial was in Tow String Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Whittier Missionary Baptist Church. Daughter of Elsie Gibson Rowland of Cherokee and the late Rev. Lloyd Rowland, she was the wife of the late Johnny Francis Davis. Sr. She was preceded in death by one sister, Willa Mae Lossiah. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are two sons, John F. "Nunnie" Davis Jr. and Jack E. Davis, both of Cherokee; one brother, Johnny Rowland of Asheville; three sisters, Jean M. Sneed and Shirley Laws, both of Cherokee, and Bermae Rowland of Hickory; and six grandchildren. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Louis SchaefferLouis Richard Schaeffer, 56, of Hampton Street, Sylva, died Monday, Aug. 14, at his residence.A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at the DaySpring Christian Fellowship, Waynesville. The Rev. Jimmy Brown officiated. A native of Philadelphia, he had been a resident of Jackson County since 1997. He was a son of the late George and Anna Shafer and a member of DaySpring Christian Fellowship, Waynesville. Surviving are one son, Jason R. Schaeffer of Nokomis, Fla.; and one brother, George Schaeffer of Ft. Pierce, Fla. Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Ronald RussellRonald "Ronnie" Russell, 62, of Joe Wilkey Road, Dillsboro, died Saturday, Aug. 19, at the VA Medical Center.Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, in the Queen Cemetery. The Rev. Charles Carnes officiated. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a member of Dillsboro Masonic Lodge 459. He served in the U.S. Army and was the son of the late George and Margaret Queen Russell. Surviving are two sons, Marcus B. Russell and Michael E. Russell, both of Atlanta; one daughter, Margaret Taylor Russell of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Amelia Gail Johnson of Dandridge, Tenn., and Patricia R. Bennecker of Knoxville, Tenn.; and two granddaughters. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Hazel CotterHazel Hawkins Cotter, 95, of Cullowhee, died Saturday, Aug. 19, in Community Care Center after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, in Cullowhee United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Frank Padgett officiated. Burial was in Cullowhee Methodist Church Cemetery. A native of Haywood County, she had lived in Jackson County most of her life. She was the daughter of the late James E. and Hila Moffitt Hawkins. A member of Cullowhee United Methodist Church, she was a charter member of the Methodist Womenıs Society of Christian Service. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Cotter; two sons, William Frank and James Robert; and one daughter, Dollie Virginia. Surviving are one son, Charles Cotter of Browns Summit; one daughter, Winona Cotter Eye of Cullowhee; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. Phyllis MiloshPhyllis Waln Milosh, 51, of Cherokee, died July 27 from malaria while on a mission trip to Malawi, Africa.A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, Acquoni Baptist Chapel in Cherokee. A native of Munford, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late C.H. and Mary Fee Cullum. Surviving are her husband, Casimir "Buzz" Milosh; one son, James A. Delashmit of Brighton, Tenn.; one daughter, Ashley E. Delashmit of Cherokee; two brothers, Sidney Cullum of Tipton, Tenn., and Jerry Cullum of Myrtle, Miss.; four sisters, Mona Ritenour of Memphis, Sylvia Tarzanin of Pennsylvania, Kay Jolly of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Jo Cullum of Covington, Tenn.; four stepchildren; and six grandchildren. |

Samuel NationsSamuel Harry Nations, 76, of Darrington, Wash., died May 28 at Arlington Hospital in Washington.Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. June 2 at Darrington Cemetery. Pastor Les Hagen officiated. A native of Jackson Countyıs Wilmot community, he had lived in Darrington, Wash., the last 52 years. He was a retired timber cutter. He formed the band, The Combinations, in 1977 and performed yearly at many bluegrass festivals. He was one of the founders of the Darrington Bluegrass and Country Music Makers Association and became a lifetime member of the association. |

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Bertha; two sons, Darrell Nations of Kennewick, Wash., and Mike Nations of Darrington, Wash.; two daughters, Shirley Harwell and Brenda Fecht, both of Arlington, Wash., two brothers, Troy of Darrington, Wash., and Donald of Arlington, Wash., two sisters, Bonnie Parris of Arlington, Wash., and Carrie Montieth of Darrington, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
