Lillie PannellLillie Clayton Waldroop Pannell, 83, of Sylva, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center in Webster after a period of declining health, having suffered a massive stroke in 1994.Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Sylva First Baptist Church. Dr. John Bunn officiated. Burial was at Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were grandsons: Michael Middleton, Brad Waldroop, Chuckie Waldroop III and Don Waldroop Jr.; and nephews: Carl Davis Jr., James Elbert Davis, "Bud" Clayton and Jimmy Grant. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she earned her bachelor of arts degree in education from Western Carolina University and taught Head Start at Log Cabin School in Jackson County for three years. She earned her licensed practical nurse degree from Southwestern Community College and served C.J. Harris Community Hospital as a nurse for 25 years. |

Upon her retirement as a nurse, she served as "Lil Loo," a children's therapeutic clown at the hospital. She also served the community in the role of "Hill Lily" as a storyteller at various functions.
She was active in church work throughout her life and was a member of Sylva First Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late John Everett Clayton and Minnie Miller Clayton Breece. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles B. "Brad" Waldroop in 1966 and Jerald L. Pannell in 1995; two sons, Don Rufus Waldroop in 1987 and Clayton Everett in infancy; one brother, the Rev. Marshall Clayton; and one sister, Vergie Clayton Grant. Surviving are four sons, Charles B. Waldroop Jr. of Lewiston, Mich., Ronald L. Waldroop of Sylva, John E. Waldroop of Lexington, Ky., and David A. Waldroop of Webster; one daughter, Dana Waldroop Middleton of Sylva; one sister, Elizabeth "Lib" Davis of Dillsboro; 10 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Emaline MillsEmaline Mills, 93, of Ashley Cagle Road, Sylva, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, in Autumn Care Nursing Center after an extended illness.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursdsay) at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Earl Holden, Paul Manous and Jack Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Nicholas, Noel and Kenneth Cagle, Ryan and Teddy Crawford, Michael Conner and Michael Dills. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the last child of the late William Hamilton and Elizabeth Jenkins Blanton. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Mills, who died in 1982, and one daughter, Dorothy Harknew. Surviving are three daughters, Ellen Manous of Taylors, S.C., Bertie Mae Cagle of Sylva and Opal Mills Greene of Greeneville, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; and five step-great-grandchildren. The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug, 22, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services. Alan KotilaAlan Charles Kotila, 54, of Paw Paw Cove Road, Webster, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at his residence.A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. Sue Ellen and Ben Bridgers officiated. A native of Harlingen, Texas, he had lived in Jackson County for most of his life. He was a building contractor and a member of the Christian Science Church. He was a son of Virginia Butler Kotila of Sylva and the late John Russell Kotila. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Linda Smith Kotila; one daughter, Taren Jame Kotila of Sylva; one son, John Marshall Kotila of Sylva; three brothers, Dean Russell Kotila of Orlando, Fla., and James Clir Kotila and Kenneth Ray Kotila, both of Sylva; and one granddaughter. Louise ManeyLouise Bigmeat Maney, 69, of Old Mormon Church Road, Cherokee, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at her residence.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Rock Springs Baptist Church. The Revs. Bobby Watts and Ronnell Owensby officiated. Burial was at Bigmeat Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons. A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Charlotte Welch Bigmeat. She was retired from the Bureau of Indian Affairs School System and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. A renowned potter, she was a recipient of the 2000 Distinguished Woman of the Year, president of Native American Indian Womenıs Association (local chapter) for several years and member of ANI-YV-WI-YA (hi) Art Committee. Former chairman of Painttown Community Club for several years, she was a member of the Lions Club, served on the Ceremonial Grounds Committee and was the recipient of the N.C. Folk Heritage Award from the N.C. Arts Council. She was preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters and one granddaughter. Surviving are her husband of 47 years, John Henry Maney; children, Donald, Johnnie, Nancy, Kenneth, Ronnell, Charla, William and Mollie; one brother, Bob Bigmeat of Cherokee; one sister, Elizabeth Jackson of Cherokee; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Lynn Watson Hall; one son, Troy Dean Hall of Cashiers; three brothers, Joe Hall of Philomath, Ore., Tim Hall of Liveoak, Fla., and Dale Hall of Sylva; and one sister, Pam Griffin of Sylva. Ellen GibsonEllen Gibson, 87, of Sylva, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Center in Franklin.Family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today (Thursday) at Liberty Baptist Church, with a funeral service to follow at 7 p.m. at the church. The Rev. Wanda Moore will officiate. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she retired from Western Carolina University after 33 years of service. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Laurner Chavis Norman; two brothers; and one sister. Surviving are a host of nieces and nephews. Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. |
