Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Adolphus Stokes

Adolphus Dock Stokes, 90, of 215 Shelton Street, Waynesville, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, after a short illness.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

A native of Texas County, Okla., he was the son of the late Mark and Mary Elizabeth Jordan Stokes. He lived 38 years in Stevens County, Kan., and one year in Jackson County prior to moving to the Haywood Lodge in Waynesville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Youderian Stokes, who died in 1984.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. He was employed by Gregg Trucking and Wade Beasley and Sons of Hugoton, Kan., for many years. After retirement, he did small engine repair and locksmithing. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Surviving are one daughter, Alecia Fischer of Cullowhee; and one granddaughter.

Katherine French

Katherine Linnie French, 67, of 1037 Sherrill Cove Road in Cherokee's Big Cove community, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Father Shawn O'Neil officiated. Burial was in Standingdeer Cemetery in Blue Wing community.

She was born Dec. 10, 1934, in Ft. Yates, N.D., at Standing Rock Reservation to the late Edmond and Patsy Baine. She was a Lakota Sioux and her Lakota name was Red Bird Woman. She was a teacher who received her degree at the University of Maryland, a craftmaker, and a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.

She was preceded in death by one son, Daniel Marvin French.

Surviving are two daughters, Teresa Ann and Patsy Marie of Cherokee; two sons, Edmond Meroney and John Randall of Cherokee; two sisters, Janet Blain Christy of Salisbury and Lois Blaine Donaty of Fredricksburg, Va.; one brother, George Baine of Talequah, Okla.; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

George Laws

George Henry Laws, 87, of Camp Creek Road, Whittier, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Carden officiated. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery in Haywood County. Pallbearers were Gene Gibson, Bill Gibson, Fritz Hillderbran, Bubba Milner, Terry Stout and Freddy Clontz.

A native of Swain County, he lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a retired carpenter and farmer, member of Hyatt's Chapel Baptist Church and the last child of the late Charlie and Eliza Parris Laws.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Mildred Z. Laws; one daughter, Opal W. Elders of Waynesville; and three grandchildren.

Clarence Lanning

Clarence E. Lanning, 59, formerly of Waynesville, died Aug. 10, 2003, at his residence in Roanoke, Va., of cancer.

Burial was at Okley Memorial Gardens of Roanoke Wednesday, Aug. 13. The Rev. Dr. Darrell Crim officiated.

He was a son of Johnnie and Dessie Mathis of Waynesville.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert and Richard Lanning; and one sister, Hazel Robinson.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife of 42 years, Christine Mull Lanning; two sons, Jeff and Johnnie Lanning; one daughter, Jeanie Irby; five sisters, Dorothy Gibson, Florence Caldwell and Virginia Rhodomer, all of Waynesville, Ruth Ellis of Gastonia and Louise Parker of Clover, S.C.; three brothers, James Lanning of Woodstock, Md., and Dewey Lanning and John Thomas Lanning, both of Waynesville; and six grandchildren.

Walter Griffin

Walter M. Griffin, 79, of Sylva, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Roger Stewman and David Souderles officiated. Burial with military honors was held in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Lawson McKinley and Ada Mae Winstead Griffin. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and in Korea, serving in the U.S. Air Force, from which he retired from in 1966. He also retired from Security Forces Inc.

Surviving is his wife, Ruby Virginia Jacobs Griffin.

Victoria Orth

Victoria Leigh Orth, 20, of Brevard, formerly of Cullowhee, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, in an automobile accident in Transylvania County.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Tuckasegee Baptist Church. The Rev. Larry Perry will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A native of Baltimore, Md., she had lived in Jackson County for 18 years before moving to Brevard. She was an employee of Transylvania Rehabilitation Center.

She attended Cullowhee Valley Elementary School and Smoky Mountain High School, where she was in the band and played the clarinet. She was a member of Tuckasegee Baptist Church.

Surviving are her father and stepmother, Robert and Shannon Winstead Orth of Cullowhee; her mother, Debra Chafin of Maryland; paternal grandmother, Alberta Orth of Baltimore, Md.; and two brothers, Patrick and Robert Orth, both of Cullowhee.

The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.

Vinnie Shuler

Vinnie H. Shuler, 93, of Cope Creek Road, Sylva, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, in Skyland Care Center after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at New Hope Baptist Church. The Revs. Hardin Nicholson and Mike Moore will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Craig Baker, Jeff Cloer, David and Jody Shuler, Jimmy Ensley and Brandon Wilson.

A native of Swain County, she had lived the past 93 years in Jackson County. She had worked for more than 20 years at Highlands Cleaners and Laundry and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. She was the last child of the late Asbury and Sara Woods Hoyle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Joseph Shuler; one son, Thomas J. Shuler; one grandson; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.

Shelby Moss

Shelby Jean Moss, 67, of Pine Creek Road, Cullowhee, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at Mission-St. Joseph's Health System in Asheville.

Moody Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

Cassandra Spillane

Cassandra Spillane, 33, of Tallahassee, Fla., died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003.

A native of Tampa, Fla., she was the daughter of the late James R. Spillane and Joyce Ellsworth, formerly of Dillsboro.

Moody Funeral Home will announce local arrangements.

Josef Vance

Josef "Skipper" Coffey Vance Jr., 58, of Jonesboro, Ga., died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, following a plane crash in Jackson County.

Born Dec. 27, 1944, in Atlanta to Joe and Ann Vance, he was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving in the Vietnam War as an air traffic controller.

A graduate of Wayne State College in Detroit, Mich., and West Georgia College in Carrollton, Ga., he founded Advertising Ideas in Atlanta in 1970, where he worked until his death. He was past president of the Rotary Club of Jonesboro and was a member of Clayton County Chamber of Commerce and the Commemorative Air Force.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Vicky Vance Rogers and Dinah Vance Hoch.
