Patty Monreal

Patty S. Wahnetah Monreal, 59, of Yellowhill Road, Cherokee, died Sunday, Aug. 13, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, in Yellowhill Baptist Church. The Revs. James "Red" Bradley and James "Bo" Parris officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, she was a member of Yellowhill Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Sam and Cora Arch Wahnetah.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, William "Bill" Wahnetah and Samuel "Buddyı Wahnetah Jr.; and two sisters, Betty Jo Taylor and Jean Bernhisel.

Surviving are one son, Danny Rhinehart of Michigan; three daughters, Jean Littlejohn of the home, Trina Sneed and Marina Robbins of Cherokee; four sisters, Charlotte Maney, Lois Wahnetah, Sybil Starlin and Margaret French, all of Cherokee; and eight grandchildren. Bill Moody Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.



Robert Scott

Robert Neill Scott, 78, died at his Chapel Hill home Friday, Aug. 11, ending a two-year illness with bone cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at University United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ronald Gonia will officiate. Burial will be in the Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.

Scott, who also had a home in the Barkers Creek community of Jackson County, received his doctorate in education at the University of Tennessee in 1956. He served on the faculty of Western Carolina University in the department of education for 10 years. His tenure at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill extended more than 25 years.

Among other responsibilities, he represented the university as a Danforth Fellow at numerous professional conferences. He served in the military during World War II, from 1943 to 1946, concluding with the rank of First Lieutenant.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Neill Scott Jr.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Hammond Scott; one son, William Thomas Scott; one daughter, Patricia Scott-Finn; two sisters, Frances Scott of Philadelphia, Miss., and Mrs. J.A. Crews of Houston; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to UNC Hospice, Pittsboro or to University United Methodist Church, Chapel Hill.



Mills Harris

Mills Harris, 41, of the Canada community of Tuckasegee, died unexpectedly Friday, Aug. 11, in Memorial Mission Hospital from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tommy Holden officiated. Burial was in Harris Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of Clyde and Bernice Ward Harris.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Milton Harris of Tuckasegee and Jeffery Harris of the home.



Dessie Kirk

Dessie J. Kirk, 89, of Kirkwood Trail, Titusville, Fla., died Monday, Aug. 7, at her home.

Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, at North Brevard Funeral Home. Burial was in New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Marietta, Ga.

A native of Jackson County, she moved to Brevard County, Fla., in 1956 from Chattanooga, Tenn. She was a retired grocer and a pioneer in starting the first shopping center in Titusville.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Kirk of Titusville and Frank Kirk of Belize, Central America; one sister, Geneva Granert of Chattanooga; one brother, James Pruett Jr. of Titusville, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association.



Helen Carman

Helen Brooks Carman, 78, of Mt. Trace Road, formerly of Saluda Dam Road, Easley, S.C., died Thursday, Aug. 10, at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home in Easley. The Rev. Terry Fowler officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

A native of Pickens County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Hamp and Vera Pressley Brooks. She was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church in Easley, where she was a member of the Golden Circle Sunday school class and former teacher of the Rup Roper Mission Group, and had been a member of the church choir. She also served as a volunteer at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Easley.

Surviving are one daughter, Dottie C. Dowling of Sylva; one brother, W.L. "Dub" Brooks of Townville, S.C.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Margaret Marsh

Margaret Irene Ashe Marsh, 86, of Spencer, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem following declining health for six months.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Trading Ford Baptist Church in Salisbury. The Rev. Mike Motley officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Houston and Rixie Ensley Ashe. She attended Jackson County schools, was a homemaker and a member of Trading Ford Baptist Church and the Fiedlis Sunday school class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, G. Woodrow "G.W." Marsh.

Surviving are one son, Bobby Marsh of Spencer; three daughters, Brenda Broughton and Helen Weaver, both of Kernersville, and Rixie Vanderberry of Raleigh; one brother, William Ashe of Asheville; one sister, Lucille Evans of High Point; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Edith Ashe

Edith Virginia Davis Ashe, 80, a longtime Skagit Valley, Wash., resident, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Home Place Special Care Center in Burlington, Wash.

Private funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 12, at Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovahıs Witnesses in Sedro-Woolley.

A native of Sylva, she was a daughter of the late George and Laura Davis. She married Clyde Ashe in 1940 in Clayton, Ga., and the family moved to Lyman, Wash., in 1953, then in 1969 they moved to Concrete, Wash. She was baptized as one of Jehovahıs Witnesses in 1959.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde, who died in 1975; one son, Clyde Jr. "Sonny"; two brothers, Karl and Hilliard; and one sister, Anna Belle.

Surviving are four daughters, Loretta Mills of Burlington, Wash., Cathy Johnson, Irene Callender and Peggy Mills, all of Concrete, Wash.; three sisters, Rosa Freeman of Mt. Dora, Fla., Gertie Orr of Charlotte and Mary Bryson of Gastonia; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
