Ruthalene McClung

McClung

McClung

Ruthalene Sims McClung, 77, of Buckden Park Drive, Sylva, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Charles Dean officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Brody Clayton, Anthony Seagle, Dale Seagle, Terry Sims, Larry Pressley and Chet Pressley.

A native of Helen, Ga., she lived most of her life in Jackson County and was retired from Jackson County as secretary in the Building Inspectors office. She was a daughter of the late Marvin V. and Molly Fain Sims.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Toni Karen McClung, who died in 1998; and one brother, John Marvin Sims, who died in 1998.

Surviving are two daughters, Sherry McClung Setliff of Fletcher and Pat McClung Clayton of Sylva; three sisters, Edith Sims Kresse of Muscle Shoals, Ala., and Helen Sims Clark and Clara Sims Bryson, both of Cullowhee; one brother, Terry Sims of Hendersonville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Jordyn Broderick

Jordyn Christana Broderick, 14-month-old daughter of Gerald and Dawn Singley Broderick of Tuckasegee, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. David Hoyle officiated. Burial was in Tuckasegee Wesleyan Church Cemetery.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are one sister, Ginger Turpin of the home; two brothers, Triston and Aaron Broderick, both of the home; maternal grandparents, Lek Marshall and Mark Singley; maternal great-grandparents, Bill and Betty Singley of Arkansas; maternal great-great-grandmother, Vida Singley of Arkansas; paternal grandmother, Cheryl Carver of Tuckasegee; paternal great-grandmother, Joyce Donaldson of Las Vegas; and paternal great-great-grandmother, Minnie Mae Myers of Las Vegas.



Winnie Eubank

Winnie Geneva Eubank, 87, of Fugitive Run Road, Sylva, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, in Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

No formal services are planned at this time.

A native of Westbrooke, Texas, she had lived in Jackson County since 1989 and was the daughter of the late John and Lottie Davis Ridgeway. She was a member of Congregational Church of Christ in Palm City, Fla.

Surviving is her husband, Eugene Eubank.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Mary Jackson

Mary Anne McClam Jackson, 56, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

A graveside service to celebrate her life was held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug.11, at Sharon Memorial Park. The Rev. Tom Kinman officiated.

She was born Aug. 23, 1944, in Lake City, S.C., daughter of the late Otis and Annie Mae Tomlinson McClam. She attended the University of South Carolina and was currently the director of communications with the Heyward Corp. in Charlotte. She was active in the Hornets Nest Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America.

Surviving are her husband, Bobby Jackson Sr.; two stepsons, Bobby Jackson Jr. of Hickory and David Jackson of Albemarle; one brother Freddie McClam of Lake City; one sister, Janice McClam of Lake City; and two grandsons.

Malachi Hall

Malachi Shea Hall, 22, of 436 Caroline Street, Rockingham, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Good News Freewill Baptist Church. The Rev. Dennis Smith will officiate.

A native of Los Angeles County, Calif., he was a son of Michael Shane and Sunny Keefer Hall. He was self-employed in the construction and lawn care industries and managed his family's boarding house in Rockingham.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Toni Hargett Hall; one daughter, Cameron Shea Hall of Rockingham; maternal grandmother, Gazelle Keefer of Sylva; and three stepsisters, Tina Riddle of Canton, Mickey Williamson of Maggie Valley and Tamara Graves of Santa Clarita, Calif. Memorials may be made to Good News Freewill Baptist Church, c/o Nan Davis, 172 Sandhill Road, Rockingham, N.C. 28379.

Julie Dunlap

Julie Kutik Dunlap, 58, of Franklin, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, in a Macon County hospital after an extended illness.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home. The Rev. Stanley Messer will officiate.

Daughter of the late Edward and Thelma Fowler Kutik, she was a resident of Little Ellijay Circle outside of Franklin. Previously she had lived with her husband and daughter in Charlotte, where she was a wife, mother and artist. She was a member of the Guild of Charlotte Artists. She was born in Oakland, N.J., and attended high school in Riviera Beach, Fla., and Palm Beach Community College.

Surviving are her husband of 34 years, Robert Dunlap; and one daughter, Alice Hammett of Asheville.

Gertrude Smith

Gertrude "Peggy" Smith, 75, of Duncanville, Texas, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 29, 2001.

A memorial service was held Aug. 2 at LaurelLand Memorial Chapel.

She was a daughter of the late Rev. Dillard and Agatha Wood of Cullowhee.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Don Wood; and two sisters, Blanche Campbell and Betty Bryant.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Cecil M. Smith; two daughters, Pamela Porter of Midlothian, Texas, and Donna Morris of Duncanville, Texas; four sisters, Lazelle Tracy of New York City, Helen Loosier of Marietta, Ga., Lois Jean Morgan of Sylva and Janice Gentry of Elkins; two brothers, Jack Wood of Charlotte and Baxter Wood of Cullowhee; and four grandchildren. LaurelLand Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Lewis Hawkins

Lewis M. Hawkins, 69, of Cashiers, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Cashiers Baptist Church. The Revs. Tommy Holden and Art Fowler will officiate. Burial will follow in Pisgah Gardens.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and a son of Edith Hunter Hawkins of Highlands and the late Ralph Hawkins. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Velma Jones Hawkins; one son, Charles Hawkins of Cashiers; one brother, Carleton Hawkins of Arden; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Moore Funeral Home in Brevard.



Ira Lee Sr.

Ira Val Lee Sr., 89, of KOA Campground Road, Cherokee, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at Mountain Manor Nursing Center, Bryson City, after a period of declining health.

Memorial services were held at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, in the pavilion of the KOA Campground. The Rev. Bo Parris officiated.

A native of Roseburg, Ore., he lived in Cherokee for the past 10 years, having been employed by KOA Campground. He was a retired salesman of timber and logging equipment and a mason. He was a son of the late Ira and Ada Cook Lee.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister and a grandson.

Surviving are his wife, Marjorie Freeman Lee; one daughter, Robin Kirschner of Arizona; one son, Ira Val Lee Jr. of Springfield, Ore.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
