The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Effie Farmer

Effie Mae Frizzell Farmer, 91, of Canton, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Canton Christian Convalescent Center after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home. The Revs. Gene Worley and Jack Scott officiated. Burial followed at Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were David Stockton, Jeff Farmer, Dean Parham, Eddie Frazier, Steve Heatherly and Tony Littrell.

Honorary pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons.

She was a native of Jackson County but had lived most of her life in Haywood County. She was a daughter of the late Jason and Lillie Deitz Frizzell and wife of the late Marion Farmer, who died in 1960. She was a member of Meadow Grove Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Grace Williams and Bertha Pressley; three brothers, Donnie, Norman and Alvin Frizzell; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

Surviving are five daughters; Opal F. Stockton and Christine F. Littrell, both of Canton, Lucille F. Seal of Morristown, Tenn., Naomi F. Frazier of Newport, Tenn., and Marie F. Heatherly of Candler; two sons; Ray Farmer and Kenneth Farmer, both of Canton; one sister, Ollie Lewis of Sylva; 23 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Richard Nolan

Richard "Dick" Nolan, 51, of McIntosh, Fla., died Thursday, July 31, 2003.

A civil engineer for the city of Ocala, Fla., he was born in St. Louis and moved to McIntosh from Largo in 1977. He was a member of the McIntosh Land Use Council, a United Way volunteer, project engineer for Historic Ocala Downtown Square and project engineer for Easy Street and other projects. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving are his wife, Kaye Nolan; parents, Herbert and Mary Nolan of Dillsboro; two sisters, Lorrie Masset of Largo and Terri Rogers of Asheville; and one brother, John Nolan of Orlando, Fla.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Guy Phillips

Guy John Phillips, 67, of Winter Haven, Fla., died Aug. 8, 2003, at Winter Haven Hospital.

Services were held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home in Winter Haven. A private burial service in Sylva is planned for a later date.

A native of Jackson County, he had lived in Florida since 1970. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retired mechanic. He was the son of the late Carl and Juanita Phillips.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Phillips; one son, Guy John Phillips Jr. of Sylva; one daughter, Debbie Short of Asheville; and one granddaughter.

Ella Owle

Ella Mae Owle, 50, of Cherokee's Painttown community, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Mission-St. Joseph's Health System in Asheville.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Cherokee Pentecostal Holiness Church. The Rev. Betty Drake officiated. Burial was in Queen Family Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, she was a daughter of the late Phillip and Geneva Queen Owle. She was a member of Cherokee Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Sherry Perez of Cherokee and Lillie Seagle of Cullowhee; one brother, Phillip Owle Jr. of Cherokee; two sisters, Frances Librado of Cherokee and Malinda Balderez of Franklin; and four grandchildren.

Birda Houston

Birda Moss Houston, 89, of Lakeview Street, Stanley, formerly of Jackson County, died unexpectedly Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. The Revs.

Johnny Norris and Keith Ashe officiated. Burial was in Pine Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Buck and Bobby Joe Moss, J.C., Chuck, Tim and Davis Norris, Dewey Houston and Alan McWilliams.

A native of Jackson County, where she lived most of her life, she was a member of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church and daughter of the late Sam and Clara Jennings.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Houston; one son, Roy Houston; one daughter, Wanda Rosealee Houston; three brothers; and one sister.

Surviving are three daughters, Aileene Watson and Ann Clark, both of Stanley, and Kaye Clemmer of Apex; one sister, Anabelle Sutton of Mebane; seven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Pine Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

John Harlan

John F. Harlan Sr., 71, a native of Jay, Okla., died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Johnson City (Tenn.) Medical Center.

The family received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Moody Funeral Home in Sylva.

A veteran of the Korean War, serving in the 101st Airborne Division, he was a son of the late Henry and Birdie Miller Harlan.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Penny Gourd.

Surviving are his wife, Vivian Ensley; four sons, Eugene Harlan, John Harlan Jr. and John M. Harlan, all of Cherokee, and James Harlan of Murphy; three daughters, Victoria Greenhagan of Lawton, Okla., Angela Browning of Murphy and Lynne Harlan of Cherokee; one brother, Jess Sixkiller; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Cherokee Nation Warriors (payable to Veterans Memorial), P.O. Box 948, Tahlequah, Okla.

Edna Bryson

Edna Mae Seay Bryson, 76, of Old Settlement Road, Sylva, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at New Hope Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Mike Moore, Hardin Nicholson and Matthew Queen officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

A native of Swain County, she had lived most of her life in Jackson County. She retired from Buster Brown Co. in 1992 and spent the last seven years in Mountain Trace Nursing Home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Roy Bryson.

Surviving are two daughters, Sheena Holland of Clyde and Brenda Phipps of Brevard; one son, Ronnie Bryson of Sylva; one sister, Mrs. Hardin Nicholson of Sylva; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Walter Jackson Jr.

Walter Sterling Jackson Jr., 56, of Cherokee, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at his residence.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Jackson Family Cemetery. Ray Kinsland officiated.

A native of Cherokee, he was employed by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. He was the son of the late Walter and Sallie Otter Jackson.

He was preceded in death by one son, Christopher Nathan Jackson.

Surviving are one daughter, Michele Wolfe; one sister, Mary West; and two stepbrothers, George V. Sneed Sr. and Richard Samuel Sneed.

Eddie Gibson

Eddie Marie Bennett Gibson, 63, of Piney Mountain Road, Whittier, died unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, as a result of an automobile accident in Sylva.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Charles Carnes, Pat Farmer and Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in Barkers Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were David and Roy Dalton, Randy Williamson, Brandon and Travis Gibson and Johnny King. Honorary pallbearers were Jason Bennett, Bill and Tim Mills and Hubert Bryson.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a daughter of Stella Mae Bennett of Sylva. She was a sewing machine operator, having worked at Buster Brown and Sylco. She attended Dicks Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by one son, Curtis Eugene Gibson.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband of 41 years, Beauford "Sonny" Gibson; two daughters, Gail Broom of Tuckasegee and Glenda Brooks of Sylva; two sons, Scotty Gibson of Franklin and Tracy Gibson of Sylva; three sisters, Kathleen Webster of Sylva, Charlene Bennett of Sylva and Patsy Shook of Cullowhee; three brothers, Woody Bennett and John Daniel Bennett, both of Sylva, and David Bennett of Tuckasegee; and three grandchildren.

Abraham Crowe

Abraham Crowe, 72, of Cherokee's Soco community, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at Tsali Care Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at Aquoni Baptist Church. The Rev. James "Bo" Parris and Ray Kinsland officiated. Burial was in Washington Cemetery.

A native of Cherokee, he was a son of the late David and Sally Chiltoskey Crowe.

He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters, Sevier Crowe, Jess Crowe, John Henry Crowe, Stacy Hornbuckle, Dora Reed, Rachel Hornbuckle, Nancy Crowe, Nellie Mae Swayney and Sam Crowe.

Surviving are two sisters, Luzene Washington and Elenora Hardin, both of Cherokee.

Raleigh Segle

Raleigh "Shipyard" Jack Segle, 72, of Gaffney, S.C., formerly of Jackson County, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at Canton Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Terry Taylor and Abe Brooks will officiate. Burial will be in Elders Cemetery, Piney Mountain.

A native of Jackson County, he had lived in Gaffney for the past 24 years. He was a retired welder with Duke Power. Son of the late Glenn and Ollie Ashe Seagle, he was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Korea, and was a member of Christian Covenant Church.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Rosemary Elders Segle; two daughters, Debbie Sparks of Cullowhee and Glenda Scruggs of Chesnee, S.C.; two sons, Gary Seagle of Atlanta and Darrell Seagle of Bryson City; five sisters, Doris Sutton of Dillsboro, Ellen Revis of Whittier, Lahoma Seagle of Sylva, Ruby Johnson of Waynesville and Ruth Davis of Woodberry, Tenn.; one brother, Dale Seagle of Cullowhee; and three grandchildren.

The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Doris Sutton, 24 Macktown Road, Sylva.

Mabel Bryson

Mabel Ann McCracken Bryson, 78, of 52 Central Ave., Waynesville, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home.

The Revs. Dr. W. Lyn Sorrells and John Christy will officiate. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Asbury Sunday school class. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at the funeral home.

A native of Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Myrtle Medford McCracken. She graduated from Western Carolina University and taught school for the Rutherford County school system. She was a former member of Rutherfordton First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a current member of Waynesville First United Methodist Church and a member of the Asbury Sunday school class.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, David, William, Carroll, and Ernest McCracken.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Thaddeus Carroll Bryson; one daughter, Anna Sauer of Longmont, Colo.; one son, Gene Carroll Bryson of Bermuda Run; three sisters, Peggy Briggs of Waynesville, Mary Frances Gray of Charlotte and Evelyn Sutton of Lake Junaluska; one brother, Albert J. McCracken Jr. of Granite Quarry; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

John Adams

John Wayne Adams, 66, of Waynesville, formerly of Sylva, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Haywood Regional Hospital after an extended illness.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Hooper Cemetery in Speedwell.

A native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life, he was a son of the late Cora Ellen Adams.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and Elmer Adams.

Surviving are several cousins.

William Paulk

William Eston Paulk Jr., 74, of Staghorn Lane, Cullowhee, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Graveside services were held Sunday, Aug. 10, in Ocilla Cemetery in Ocilla, Ga. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Sylva. Father Henry Barton will officiate.

An educator and award-winning author, he was born in Rebecca, Ga., on March 7, 1929. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1950 and his master's degree in 1954, both from the University of Georgia, with further study at Tulane University and Oxford University in England.

He was a member of the English department faculty at Western Carolina University for more than 30 years, joining the faculty in 1959. He served as director of the university's program in creative writing from 1962 until his retirement in 1989.

He also taught at the University of Georgia and served as a visiting professor of English at Yunnan University in China in 1987. In 1990, WCU's board of trustees designated him as professor emeritus of English.

He was the recipient of numerous awards for his poetry, drama and short stories, including the Oscar Arnold Young Award from the Poetry Society of North Carolina in 1985 for his "The Beholden Hills."

A member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Sylva, he was formerly a member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Cullowhee, having served as vestryman, warden and lay reader. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army, including combat during the Korean War, from 1950-1952. He was a son of the late William Eston and Bulah Taylor Paulk.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Myrtle Paulk Mann; and two brothers, James Ralph Paulk and Franklin Jacob Paulk.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 18 Jackson Street, Sylva, or the charity of one's choice.
