Mildred WilsonMildred Frances Smith Wilson, 80, of 288 Chandler Street, Hartwell, Ga., died Friday, July 28, at Hospice House in Anderson, S.C.Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at Nancy Hart Memorial Park. The Rev. Jan Devereaux officiated. Born in Stephens County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late D.G. Smith and Maude Elizabeth Ivie Smith. She was a graduate of Stephens County High School and Charlotte Memorial School of Nursing. She was a retired registered nurse from Hart County Hospital, member of Hartwell First United Methodist Church, Sally Harper Circle and the Live Wire SS Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph F. "Joe" Wilson; two brothers: Hoyt B. Smith and H. T. Smith; and one sister: Myrtle Smith. Surviving are one son, J. Fred Wilson of Decatur, Ga.; one daughter, Florence W. "Flo" Brown of Dewy Rose; one brother, Furman N. Smith of Hartwell, S.C.; one sister, Florence S. McNabb of Hartwell, S.C.; and four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Hartwell First United Methodist Church, 200 E. Clyde HooperClyde Alvin Hooper, 80, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, July 26, at Presbyterian Hospital.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 28, at Shady Brook Baptist Church. The Rev. George Sherman officiated. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery. A native of Cullowhee's Caney Fork community, he was a son of the late Weston Hutson and Jane Watson Hooper. He was a member of Shady Brook Baptist Church, Senior Men's Sunday School Class, West Gate Masonic Lodge 738 Scottish Rite Bodies Oasis Temple and was owner/operator of Hooper's Upholstery. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Surviving are his wife of almost 60 years, Joyce Fisher Hooper; one son, Ronald Clyde Hooper of Charlotte; two daughters, Janet Jane McCullough of Mooresville and Kim Ellen McGee of Charlotte; one brother, Wade Hooper of Cullowhee; one sister, Ruth Brooks of Sylva; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Florence RhinehartFlorence Wesley Stephens Rhinehart, wife of Joe P. Rhinehart of Webster and Georgetown, Ky., passed away on Sunday, July 30, at Harris Regional Hospital.Surviving, in addition to her husband, is her cat, Saint Magnus Bay of the home. Burial was in the Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery (Jennings Cemetery), with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post 7339 and the American Legion Post 108. Pallbearers were Jason Smith, Stanley Penland, Roy Smith, Tim Ledford, Bobby "Tude" McCoy and Donald Bradley. A native of Macon County, he was a son of the late James Ervin Smith and Lillie DeHart Smith. He retired from Duncan Oil in 1994 and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one brother, Ray Smith, who died in 1992. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Frances Angel Smith; two sons, David Smith of Franklin and Roger Smith of Georgia; two brothers, Paul R. Smith of Winston-Salem and Carroll J. Smith of Sylva; and four grandchildren. Shirley MonteithShirley Grasty Monteith, 90, of 74 Sayles Town Road, Fairview, died Thursday, July 27, at St Joseph's Hospital.Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 30, at Pisgah View Memorial Park. The Rev. Willard Pruitt officiated. A native of Macon County, she was a daughter of the late Ciscero and Bertha Grasty. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank H. Monteith, and one son, Donald Monteith. Surviving are one daughter, Katherine M. Justice of Fairview; two sons, Johnny Monteith of Asheville and Phillip Belk of Flagler Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Joe Thomas Jr.Joe Carroll Thomas Jr., 47, of Cherokee, died Thursday, July 27, at his home.A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte. The family will receive visitors in the church atrium after the service. A music major at Brevard College, he graduated from Western Carolina University with a bachelor of science degree in psychology. During his career he owned and operated the following businesses: Thomas Paint Contracting and Construction Co. in Boulder, Colo., Joe's Snack Bar and Bicycle Rental in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Cresent Beach Skating Rink in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he initiated a roller hockey program primarily for the youth of the area. He was a counselor for Hawthorn Heights Children's Shelter in Bryson City. At the time of his death he was employed with Wiggins Construction and Realty Co. in Bryson City. He was a member of Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte. Surviving are his parents, Joe Carroll Thomas Sr. and Ruth Stone Thomas of Charlotte; one brother, Jerry B.
