The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to readers.

When possible, obituaries should be sent to the Herald from the funeral home. Information received will be placed in our standard obituary format.

We publish names of all of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

A brief history of the deceased is included. We include information on their employment, as well as professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

Turner Turner

Alice Turner

Alice Dills Weaver Turner of Sylva, died Thursday, July 25, 2002.

Private graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 28, at Parris Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Clegg officiated.

She was born July 23, 1923, the daughter of the late Arthur Hale Weaver and Beulah Dills Weaver. A descendant of two pioneer families in Western North Carolina, she was the granddaughter of the late William Allen Dills, for whom the town of Dillsboro was named, and the late Alice Enloe Dills. She lived in Dillsboro most of her life.

She was a graduate of Western Carolina Teachers College and George Peabody College of Teachers. She taught in schools in Jackson, Macon and Buncombe counties and Morganton City Schools. She was a probation officer for several years in Western North Carolina. She owned and operated Lake Toohow Campground since 1974, owned Comment-Deux Kennels and raised many champion dogs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert "Bill" Dixon Turner, who died in 1974. There are no survivors.

Eugene French

Eugene Nicholas "Nick" French, 62, of Lambert Branch Road, Cherokee, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Cherokee Indian Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 28, at Yellow Hill Baptist Church. The Revs. Rolan Whitaker, Bobby Watts and Red Bradley officiated. Burial was in French Family Cemetery.

He was a native of Swain County and later moved to Rockville, Md., where he retired from Indian Health Agency. He was a son of the late Morgan and Dinah Crowe French. He was of the Baptist denomination and served in the National Guard.

Surviving are four sisters, Maude F. Paul and Darlene DeFoe, both of Cherokee, Susannah Roach, of Cache, Okla., and Roberta French of Rockville, Md.; three brothers, Dale Morgan French and Jonathan French, both of Cherokee and Eugene Morgan French of Winder, Ga.

Kenneth Keepfer

Kenneth Karl Keepfer, 96, of Bryson City, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at his residence.

A private memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 21, at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, of which he was a member. Father Heber Peacock officiated.

A native of Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Thomas Anton and Margaret Noe Keepfer. He was a research scientist with General Electric, where his inventions won several awards; one being the first space capsule with a monkey as passenger. He was a member of Bryson City Rotary Club, a Boy Scout leader for 15 years and was involved in community activities.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Lucy Biddle Keepfer; one son, Todd Keepfer; four brothers; and four sisters.

Surviving are his wife, Lorraine York Keepfer of the home; two stepsons, Larry York and Lowell York, both of Bryson City; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

Gensie Smith

Gensie Francis Smith, 93, of Sylva and Rock Hill, S.C., died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, in White Oak Manor Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Friday, July 26, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 27, in Old Field Cemetery.

She was a native of Haywood County, lived in Jackson County most of her life and lived in Rock Hill, S.C., since 1968. She was a member of College Park Baptist Church in Rock Hill and retired from United Merchandising Co. She was the daughter of the late John R. and Mary Frady Francis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Smith; one daughter; and one grandchild.

Surviving are one daughter, Mary Hooper of Rock Hill, S.C.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Dennis Frizzell

Dennis R. Frizzell of Little Savannah community, Webster, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 26, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Ray McCall officiated. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at Old Savannah Cemetery. The Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiated.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Charlie and Mary Etta Lewis Frizzell. He was a member of Webster Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, treasurer and Sunday school teacher. He was retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation after 28 years of service.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Calvin, George and Ernest Frizzell.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Eula Mae Gregory Frizzell; one daughter, Glenda Bradley of Whittier; two sisters, Edith Cole of Hendersonville and Lucille Farmer of Sylva; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.

Theresa Norton

Theresa Parker Norton, 82, of Ivy Hill Nursing Home, Brevard, died Friday, July 26, 2002.

Graveside services were held Sunday, July 28, at Tuckasegee Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Tommy Madden officiated.

A native of the Tuckasegee community, she was a daughter of the late Lon A. and Minnie Pruitt Parker. She had lived in Transylvania County for 34 years and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are one daughter, Mary Ellen Hooper of Pisgah Forest; two sons, Paul Norton of Marion and R.L. Norton of Brevard; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Davis

Dorothy B. Davis, 75, of Sylva's Lovesfield community died Friday, July 26, 2002, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 28, at Love's Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dan Stiles officiated. Burial was at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native of Jackson County and a graduate of Webster School, she worked for years in the banking industry in Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina. Daughter of the late Charlie F. and Lennis Taylor Bumgarner, she was a member of Love's Chapel United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, U.G. Davis Jr.; and one sister, Helen Johnson.

Surviving are two sons, Charles and Jim Hager, both of Sylva; two stepsons, Alec Davis of Bassett, Va., and Kramer Davis of Statesville; one stepdaughter, Carolyn Phillips of Statesville; three brothers, Earnest, Clyde and L.C. Bumgarner, all of Sylva; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Bessie Brown

Bessie H. Brown, 73, of Cullowhee's Wilson Creek community, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at her residence.

Moody Funeral Home will announce the arrangements.



Martha Braxton

Martha Stocks Braxton, 91, of Seaside, Calif., died Friday, July 19, 2002, in Sunbridge Nursing Center in Monterey, Calif., after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 25, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Sherrill Ammons officiated. Burial was in Old Field Cemetery.

A native of Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Will and Pearl Dale Stocks. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Seaside.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel L. Braxton Sr.; one sister, Julie Elks; and one brother, Pittman Stocks.

Surviving are one daughter, Annie Ruth Mathis of Sylva; two sons, Daniel L. Braxton Jr. of Seaside, and Jessie C. Braxton of Sylva; one sister, Christine Wilson of Greenville; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
