Henry GallowayLee Henry Galloway, 79, of Whittier died unexpectedly Sunday, July 23, in Morganton.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Ray Kinsland and the Rev. Steve Jamison officiated. Burial was in Hyatt Creek Cemetery in Whittier. Pallbearers were Clyde Allison, Ray Ferguson, Donald Raby, John Sandlin, John W. Volger III and John W. Volger IV. Born in Jackson County to the late Elbert Dallas Galloway and Sarah Ward Galloway Ray, he received a bachelor of science degree from Western Carolina University and a master's degree from George Peabody in Nashville. He served as a U.S. Naval officer during World War II in the Pacific. He retired after 42 years as an educator in the North Carolina school system. During his career, he was principal at Fontana, Stecoah, Sylva and Morganton. He implemented several physical education programs in the schools where he was principal. During this time, he was also active in several civic clubs including the Lions. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Morganton. After his retirement in 1987, he was able to devote much of his time to his farm. He lived in Morganton and Whittier. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one brother, Carl Wilson Galloway. Surviving are his wife, Edith S. Galloway; three sons, Keith E. Galloway of Morganton, Brian A. Galloway of Whittier and Lee H. Galloway II of Cashiers; one brother, Grady R. Galloway of Cary; and one sister, Dr. Birdie Volger of Rutherfordton. Mildred StamperMildred Lorraine "Millie" Smith Stamper, 31, of Cherokee, died Wednesday, July 19.Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 21, at Acquoni Baptist Chapel. Burial was in Washington's Creek Cemetery. A resident of the Washinton's Creek area of Cherokee, she was a certified dental hygienist assistant and a certified nursing assistant. She was a member of Acquoni Baptist Chapel. She was the daughter of Frances Littlejohn Smith and Furman Smith-Crowe and stepdaughter of Melinda Smith-Crowe, all of Cherokee. She was the granddaughter of the late Ruth Littlejohn. Surviving are her husband, Ray L. Stamper Jr.; five children, Tenilla Stamper, Ray L. Stamper III, John Davis, Lynsey Stamper and Corey Davis; three sisters, Stephanie Arneach of Cherokee, Anita James of Candler and Elexis Smith of Cherokee; three brothers, Steve Douglas Smith of Sylva and Wesley and Thomas Smith of Cherokee; and her grandmother, Mildred Myers Smith of Cherokee. Lucille ShulerLucille Fisher Shuler, 79, of Dillsboro, died Thursday, July 20, in Harris Regional hospital after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 23, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. David Burch, Frank Brooks and Roy Burnette officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Billy Melton, Patrick Ramey, Ricky Fisher, Charles Ramey, Kenny Robinson and Jimmy Woodard. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she retired from Jackson County schools in the janitorial department. She was the daughter of the late G. Lorango and Allie Mills Fisher. She was preceded in death by her husband, David H. Shuler, who died in 1997; one daughter, Doris S. Melton; and one sister, Cora Crawford. Surviving are two sons, Fred Shuler of Sylva and Robert Shuler of Dillsboro; three brothers, Ernest and Alvin Fisher, both of Waynesville, and Lester Fisher of Sylva; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Marion CooperMarion Hillman Cooper, 78, Penny Lane, Maggie Valley, died Monday, July 24, at Mission-St. Joseph Health System in Asheville.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. The Revs. David S. Melton, Horwood P. Myers Jr. and Dr. James Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Bon-A-Venture on Old Clyde Road. Pallbearers will be Steve Cooper, Geoffrey Cooper, Clifford "Bud" Ostergard, Benjamin Edwards, Christopher Owen and William Owen. A native of Jackson County and a former resident of Cumberland, he was a longtime resident of Haywood County. He attended Jackson County schools, graduating from Cullowhee High School in 1939. He also attended Western Carolina Teachers College. As a young man, he worked for the Morrison Knudson Co. and was involved in construction of both the Thorpe Dam at Glenville and the Shasta Dam in California. He helped build the first submarine chaser, the PC550, at Sturgeon Bay, Wisc. He was in the LP gas distributing business with Moody-Rulane Inc., and with Regal Gas Service managing commercial heating and air conditioning design and installation. In Fayetteville, he was the supervisor of the energy conservation department for the public works commission retiring in 1987. He was a past member of the Waynesville Rotary Club and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, serving in many capacities including as a member of the administrative board. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Lojaun Galloway Cooper; two daughters, Janet Cooper Tingle of Norcross, Ga., and Sandra Cooper Owen of Waynesville; one sister, Mary Evangeline Belcher of Bethel; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
