Wanda Sue Gass Harris, 63, of Whittier, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 13, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Harvey Gass and Bo Parris officiated. Burial was in Thomas Memorial Cemetery. A native of Swain County, she had lived most of her life in Jackson County. She was the daughter of the late Marshall and Lillian Blankenship Gass. She was an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, a former employee of Swain County Social Services and a member of Patterson Chapel Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Bill Harris; two sons, Danny Harris of Asheville and Dwayne Harris of Swannanoa; three brothers, Bill Gass and Buddy Gass, both of Whittier, and Marshall Gass of Kings Mountain; one sister, Elizabeth Bryson of Whittier; and four grandchildren. |

Keith HillKeith Dale Hill, 75, of 619 Lakewood Lane, Anderson, S.C., died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at his residence.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 20, at the graveside in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Julian Crowe officiated. A native of Waynesville, he was a son of the late R. Garrett and Edna Caldwell Hill. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and had retired from Duke Power Co. He was a member of the National Guard, the Shriner's and Divver Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by one sister, Vivian Elaine Hill. Surviving are his wife, Betty McMahan Hill; two daughters, Lila S. Vickery and Margaret Hill Barnes, both of Anderson, S.C.; one brother, Denton Hill of Waynesville; one sister, Linda Hill Mills of Sylva; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild. Wanda WatsonWanda Lee Enloe Watson, 64, of Watson Branch Road, Cullowhee, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at her residence after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Tim Dillard and Gene Harris officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Tracey Watson, Truman Taylor, Lloyd Owle, Jack Lackey, Robbie Watson and Ted Shuler Sr. A native of Swain County, she had lived in Jackson County most of her life. She retired from Western Carolina University in the housekeeping department and was a member of Sunrise House of Worship. She was the daughter of the late John Boyd and Pauline Lambert Enloe and the wife of the late Claude Watson, who died in 1989. She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Enoch Harris. Surviving are three sons, Terry Watson and Larry Watson of Cullowhee and Gary Watson of Asheville; three sisters, Helen Owle of Cherokee and Macie Middleton and Ruth Patterson of Sylva; two brothers, John Boyd Enloe of High Point and Gene Harris of Cherokee; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Phillip HensonPhillip Alvin Henson, 91, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Ill.Funeral Services were held Saturday, July 14, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Portland, Texas. Cryptsite services and Masonic services followed at Seaside Memorial Park Mausoleum in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was married for 52 years to the late Velmer Henson. He was a 50-year resident of Corpus Christi and Portland, Texas. A native of Cullowhee, he was a cowboy in Wyoming and a U.S. Navy veteran. He retired from Coastal States Refinery in 1975. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Portland, was past master of Portland Masonic Lodge 1141, a member of the San Antonio Valley of the Scottish Rite, and past worthy patron of Portland Eastern Star Chapter 1108. Surviving are one son, Phillip A. Henson Jr. of Houston; one daughter, Mary Lou Hamill of Barrington, Ill.; one sister, Betty Masket of Chevy Chase, Md.; two grandsons; one great-granddaughter, Cage-Mills Funeral Home, Everhart Chapel, 4901 Everhart Road Corpus Christi, Texas, was in charge of arrangements. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 21, in Darrington.A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Alonza and Melissa Sutton. Surviving are his wife, Edna; two sons, Carldon of Darrington and Danny of Everett, Wash.; one sister, Mildred Brooks of Whittier; two brothers, Don of Hendersonville and Robert of Asheville; and one granddaughter. George LittlejohnGeorge Littlejohn, 87, of Cherokee, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, in a Bryson City nursing facility after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, at Rock Springs Baptist Church. The Revs. Bobby Watts, James "Bo" Parris and Denny Crowe officiated. Burial was at Littlejohn Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a member of Tow String Baptist Church, a retired wood carver at the Oconoluftee Indian Village and a member of the Qualla Arts and Craft Co-op. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eliwee and Annie Tooni Littlejohn; his wife of 68 years, Bessie Littlejohn; four sons; one daughter; five brothers; and one sister. Surviving are one daughter, Sue Ellen Littlejohn of Cherokee; and one granddaughter. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Pauline HallbomWilliam Richard Warren, 53,Pauline T. Hallbom, 94, of Sylva, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at her home.Born in Alymer, Ontario, Canada, she became a U.S. citizen and was a graduate of Northwestern University in Illinois. She was a pharmacist assistant and a school librarian with a gift of storytelling. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Charlotte Sanders Thomson. She was the oldest of four children, all of whom preceding her in death. She was the wife of the late Gustan V. Hallbom, who died in 1988 after 52 years of marriage. Surviving are one son, Timothy M. Hallbom of Sacramento, Calif.; two daughters, Judy Milkey of Sylva and Ramona I. Saddler of Peoria, Ariz.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Teaster, 71, of Rice Road, Cashiers, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at her residence after a period of declining health.Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today (Thursday) at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Johnny Norris will officiate. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Cashiers Church of God. She was a daughter of the late James and Catherine Brown Woodring and wife of the late Daniel Teaster. She was preceded in death by one son, Tommy Teaster. Surviving are one son, Blaine Teaster of Cashiers; one daughter, Debbie Conley of Cashiers; two brothers, Luther Woodring of Cullowhee and Lawrence Woodring of Lexington; one sister, Nellie Williams of Pickens, S.C.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The family was to have received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at Moody Funeral Home.
