The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Billy Ray Bryson

Billy Ray Bryson, 60, of Ferguson Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Friday, July 18, 2003.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at Lovedale Baptist Church. The Revs. John Swanger and Gerald Conner officiated. Burial was in Old Field Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Robert Mathis, Keith Webb, Hubert Bryson, Jim Parker, Ed Buchanan, John Brown, Phillip Turpin, Justin Mathis, Larry Parker, David Shuler, Lewis Davis Jr., Jim Evans and Cance Hensley.

He was born in Cookeville, Tenn., son of the late Ray H. and Mary Parker Bryson, and lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a businessman, having been the founder of Bryson Farm Supply in 1973 and Bryson Trucking Co. in 1990.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Nellie Ensley Bryson; four daughters, Debra B. Hooper, Angie B.

Nicholson, Marilyn B. Ammons, and Krystal B. Bradley, all of Sylva; one sister, Lucinda B. Dillard of Sylva; and nine grandchildren.

Annette Burns

Annette Whigham Burns, 66, of Sylva's Barkers Creek community, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, at Sylva First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Paul Christy officiated. Burial was in Barkers Creek Cemetery.

A native of Recovery, Ga., she lived most of her life in Jackson County. For the past six years she lived with her mother in Havana, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William James Burns Jr.; her father, Marvin O'Neal Whigham; and two sons, Fredrick Leon and Terry Marvin Whigham.

Surviving are her mother, Merle Whiddon Whigham of Havana, Fla.; one son, William James Burns III of Whittier; one daughter, Sherry Burns Wilson of Dillsboro; one stepdaughter, Jamie Hughie of Texas; and six grandchildren.

Robert Harcourt

Robert Harcourt, 70, of Piney Mountain Estates, Sylva, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after an extended illness.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial will be in Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived in Jackson County for the past 10 years. He retired from Grumman Aerospace as a quality control inspector. He was a U.S. Marines veteran, serving in the Korean War, and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Isabella Braun Harcourt; one daughter, Nancy Teressi of Centerach, N.Y.; two sons, Thomas Harcourt of Ronkonkama, N.Y., and Daniel Harcourt of Whittier; one sister, Carol Clark of Connecticut; and several grandchildren.

Wade Crain

Wade E. Crain of Cherokee died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at his residence following a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 21, in the chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. John Orr officiated. Burial followed in Beck Cemetery.

A native of Unicoi County, Tenn., he had lived in Swain County for the past 69 years. He was the son of the late William and Sallie Higgins Crain.

He retired after 29 years of service with the N.C.Wildlife Commission as a wildlife officer. He was a member of Ocoee Masonic Lodge 422 and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving with the Rainbow Division in World War II.

He was the owner and operator of the Elyawa Campground in Cherokee for 31 years.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Hilda Blankenship.

Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Elba Parker Crain; three daughters, Jolene Mathis of Almond, Shelda Cooper of Alpharetta, Ga., and Susan Childers of Winston Salem; one stepdaughter, Janie English of Bryson City; two sisters, Jessie Bracken of Erwin, Tenn., and Ruth Sheehan of Hickory; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Cinderalla Glazebrook

Cinderella Price Glazebrook, 80, of Grace Heights, died Saturday, July 19, 2003.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton. The Rev. David Robinson officiated. Burial followed at Trinity Baptist Church.

Surviving include one daughter, Delores Nicholson of Webster, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Jackson County.

Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton assisted the family.

Sue Hooper

Sue Ann Middleton Hooper, 75, of Allen Henson Circle, Sylva, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Ensley's Adult Care Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Neal Roland officiated. Burial was in East LaPorte Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Full Gospel Christian Fellowship Church of Waynesville. She was a teller at Citizen Bank and daughter of the late John Booth and Cora Whitley Middleton.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ewart Leiter "E.L." Hooper, who died in 1967, and an infant daughter, Sue Ann Hooper.

Surviving are one daughter, Lin Hooper of Nashville, Tenn.; two sons, Whit Hooper and James "Buddy" Hooper, both of Sylva; one sister, Jessie Slate of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Carlos and Jim Middleton, both of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pauline Long

Pauline Elizabeth George Long, 82, of Cherokee's Painttown community, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in Cherokee Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at Acquoni Baptist Church. The Rev. Robert Christopher and Ray Kinsland officiated. Burial followed in Long Family Cemetery. Pallbearers were Calvin Lossie, Tony Standingdeer, Dan Deakin, Perry Shell, Chris Maney and Bud Mathis.

A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, she was the daughter of the late Goliath Gee and Bessie Byrd George and wife of the late Wilburn Long. She worked in Indian crafts, making bead works, jewelry and was a weaver. She was a member of Acquoni Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by one son, James Duke Long.

Surviving are five sons, Gus and David George and George, Rick and Randall Long, all of Cherokee; three daughters, Jessie Maney, Fern Saunooke and Lauren Long, all of Cherokee; one brother, George Craig of Bryson City; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Charlie Mills

Charlie E. Mills, 51, of Ladderback Trail, Sylva, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Robert Blanton and Gerald Morris officiated. Burial was in Love Cemetery. Pallbearers were Timothy Frady, Bill Sneed, Jamie Barlow, Mack Farmer and Steve Austin.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a construction worker. He was a son of Lillie V. Cope Mills of Sylva and the late Luther Mills. He was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Mills.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 29 years, Carol Sue Bradley Mills; one son, Jeffrey D. Mills of Sylva; four sisters, Ruby Tackett of Cave City, Ark., Louise Mills, Alva Dee Worley and Ruthie Bradley, all of Sylva; and four brothers, Ervin, Ray, Bo and Walt Mills, all of Sylva.

George Powell

George Powell, 58, of Shook Cove Road, Tuckasegee, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 18, at Tuckasegee Wesleyan Church. The Revs. Jeff Powell, Jim Manley and T.C. Childs officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from Dayco Rubber Plant's raw edge and concrete house department with 21 1/2 years of service.

He was a member of Tuckasegee Wesleyan Church, where he served as song leader, treasurer, Sunday school teacher, chairman of the board, trustee and caretaker. He was a son of the late Edd and Lucy Daves Powell.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry Powell and Doyle Powell; and two sisters, Laura Brooks and Patsy Powell.

Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Patricia Barnes Powell; three daughters, Alana Fisher of Waynesville, Zara Ashe of Tuckasgee and Nola McFalls of Cullowhee; five sisters, Lois Powell Cogdill of Sylva, Ora Berrier of Kings Mountain, Agnes Coggins of Tuckasegee, Louise Deitz of Hinesville, Ga., and Betty Walker of Lakeland, Fla.; one brother, the Rev. Jim Ed Powell of Cullowhee; and three grandchildren.

Patricia Brooks

Patricia Ann "Patty" Queen Brooks, 50, of Sedro Woolley, Wash., died Saturday, July 12, 2003, after a brief illness.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, July 16, in Lyman Cemetery under the direction of Lemely Funeral Home.

She was the granddaughter of the late Herburt and Nora Queen Young.

She was preceded in death by her father, Troy Queen; and one brother, Alfred Queen.

Surviving are her mother, Jean Young Queen of Sedro Woolley, Wash.; her husband, Richard Brooks; one daughter, Jessica Brooks; one son, Jason Brooks; one brother, Bruce Queen of Sedro Woolley; and three grandsons.

Pete Walsh

Pete Walsh of Cullowhee died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at the home of his daughter, Sky Simmons, in Wayehutta community.

A memorial service will be announced later.

A native of Virginia, he raised his family in Western North Carolina, where he worked in the construction trades, including carpentry, masonry and the prevention of erosion.

Surviving, in addition to his daughter, are his wife, Karol; his mother, Leslie Walsh; one brother, Mike Walsh; one sister, Arron Walsh; one son, Jesse Walsh of Cullowhee; and stepdaughter, Sally Freeman; and two step-granddaughters.

Moody Funeral Home will assist the family.

Louise Ellis

Louise N. Ellis, 89, formerly of Sylva, died at her home in Fredericksburg, Va., Friday, June 27, 2003, following a period of declining health.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 28, in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

She was a lifelong musician and participated in church and secular music activities until her retirement and move to Fredericksburg in 1996. She was a former member of Sylva First Baptist Church and maintained contact with her Ruth Sunday school class.

Surviving are one daughter, Peggy Larose of Fredericksburg; one son, Tony Ellis of Circleville, Ohio; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southwestern Community College Foundation in memory of Paul and Louise Ellis, 477 College Drive, Sylva, N.C. 28779.

Stella Keever

Stella Jane Stiles Keever, 95, of Gresham, Ore., formerly of Dillsboro, died Thursday, July 17, 2003.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 21, at Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church in Dillsboro. The Rev. Frank Brooks officiated. Pallbearers were Perry Sutton, Warren Stillwell, Clifton Sutton, Ernest Bumgarner, Howard Myers and Travis Keever.

Daughter of the late William and Mary Ensley Stiles, she was born and raised in Jackson County, where she attended school and at age 16 married Thomas Keever. They raised their four children and operated a restaurant in Sylva, then moved to Klamath, Calif., where she ran a restaurant.

They moved to Santa Ana, Calif., where they managed apartments until his death in 1981. She moved to Bakersfield, Calif., then to Gresham, where she lived until her death.

She was affiliated with the Eastern Star and was a member of Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Thomas Keever; three sons, James Keever, Harold Keever and Thomas William Keever; one daughter, Betty Jean Keever Kuedtke.; one sister, Mittie Neal.
Surviving are 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Wayne Sims

Wayne R. Sims, 61, of Level Lane, Franklin, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Scott Thompson officiated. Burial was in Locust Field Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lloyd Peterson, Bill Snyder, Steve Sims Jr., David Seay, Chris Norton and Rick Cook.

A native of Charleston, S.C., he had lived in Franklin for the past nine years. He worked at Ziekgraf, was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam and member of Newman Chapel Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Winfred Larkin and Doris Mae Riely Sims.

Surviving are his wife of six years, Lorraine Snyder Sims; three daughters, Belinda Seay of Franklin, Carollee Kidd of Tobyhanna, Penn., and Brenda Streeter of Staton Island, N.Y.; two sons, Wayne Riely Sims Jr. and Bruce Ryan Streeter, both of Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Lucy Fields of Dickinson, Tenn; one brother, David Summins of New York; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Johnnie Crawford

Johnnie Clark Crawford, 66, of Forest Hill Circle, Brevard, formerly of Sylva, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 21, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in Wike Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, she had lived in Brevard for the past 40 years. She was the daughter of the late Tobe and Opal Lee Moody Clark.

Surviving are one daughter, Connie Crawford of Athens, Ga.; and two brothers, Buddy Clark of Cumming, Ga., and Michael Clark of Cullowhee.

Laura Cuzange

Laura Marguerit Cuzange, 47, of Sylva, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital.
