Wanda Sue Gass Harris, 63, of Whittier, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 13, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Harry Gass and Bo Parris officiated. Burial was in Thomas Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jeff Nations, Norman Jordan, Michael Walker, Tino Reblledo, Gary Jones, Jim Houston and Lindsay Reed. A native of Swain County, she had lived most of her life in Jackson County. She was the daughter of the late Marshall and Lillian Blankenship Gass. She was an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, a former employee of Swain County Social Services and a member of Patterson Chapel Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Bill Harris; two sons, Danny Harris of Asheville and Dwayne Harris of Swannanoa; three brothers, Bill Gass and Buddy Gass, both of Whittier, and Marshall Gass of Kings Mountain; one sister, Elizabeth Bryson of Whittier; and four grandchildren. |

Gunter, 89, of Whirlwind Drive, Whittier, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in Harris Regional Hospital after an extended illness.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at Hyatt Chapel Baptist Church. The Revs. Steve Webb, Hardin Nicholson and Eddie Stillwell officiated. Burial was in Gunter Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Moore, Carlos Gunter, Roy Ball, Gary Gunter, Sam Parker and Adam Parker. A native of Swain County, he had lived most of his life in Jackson County and was a son of the late George G. and Julia Crisp Gunter. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Hyatt Chapel Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the deacons, a Sunday school teacher and song leader. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Julia Oxner Gunter; one daughter, Lamada Thompson of Clyde; one son, Larry W. Gunter of Whittier; one sister, Mary Styles of Whittier; two brothers, Homer and Gentry Gunter, both of Whittier; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Steven BeloSteven George Belo, 8, of Hazelwood River Road, Edgewater, Fla., formerly of Jackson County, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, in Edgewater as the result of a vehicular accident. He was struck by a truck while riding his bicycle near his home.Born in DeLand, Fla., he moved with his family to Edgewater last year from Sylva. He owned his own boat with a motor and was an avid fisherman and an honor student at Indian River Elementary School. Surviving are his parents, Robert and Deborah Belo of Edgewater, Fla.; two sisters, Julia and Nancy Belo, both of Edgewater; his paternal grandfather, George Belo of Sylva; and his maternal grandmother, Susie Frierson of DeLand, Fla. Phillip HensonPhillip Alvin Henson, 91, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Ill.Funeral Services were held Saturday, July 14, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Portland, Texas. Cryptsite services and Masonic services followed at Seaside Memorial Park Mausoleum in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was married for 52 years to the late Velmer Henson. He was a 50-year resident of Corpus Christi and Portland, Texas. A native of Cullowhee, he was a cowboy in Wyoming and a U.S. Navy veteran. He retired from Coastal States Refinery in 1975. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Portland, was past master of Portland Masonic Lodge 1141, a member of the San Antonio Valley of the Scottish Rite, and past worthy patron of Portland Eastern Star Chapter 1108. Surviving are one son, Phillip A. The Rev. Charles Dean officiated. She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County. She was preceded in death by her parents, E.B. and Maggie Montieth; and one sister Edna Montieth. Department of Transportation. He was the son of the late Frank Jackson and Candice Sorrells Gregory. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Lee Gregory; two daughters, Catheline Louise Gregory and Magdeline Gregory; two brothers; and three sisters. John ClaytonJohn H. Clayton Jr., 85, Cullowhee, died at his residence on Sunday, July 15, 2001.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Cullowhee Baptist Church. The Rev. Walter Middleton officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. He retired in 1980 after working as a paint contractor and in retail. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Cullowhee Baptist Church, a board member for Cullowhee Fire Department for 25 years, served on the Jackson County Planning Board for 15 years and on the Jackson County Recreation Board for 18 years. He was a charter and lifetime member of Land of the Sky PDCA and lifetime member of Mike Martin VFW Post 9493. He had been involved in many community and county activities throughout his life. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Catherine McGuire Clayton; two daughters, Ann Fowler of Hendersonville and Janie Lambert of Morganton; two sons, Pat of Cullowhee and David of Valdese; and six grandsons. Glover BedfordCannon Glover Bedford Jr., 73, of Webster died at home Friday, July 13, 2001, following a brief battle with cancer.A memorial service was conducted by the Revs. Joe Fulk and J. Paul Christy and Chaplain Vinson W. Miller, USN, at 11 a.m. Monday, July 16, in Sylva First United Methodist Church. A private burial service was held at Webster Cemetery. A native of High Point, he was the son of the late Cannon Glover Bedford Sr. and Carrie Wilkinson Bedford. He was a graduated of both Riverside Military Academy and N.C. State University (Class of '52) and also received a degree from the Merchant Marine Academy at Biloxi, Miss. Following naval officer candidate school in Newport, R.I., and basic underwater demolition school at Coronado, Calif., he joined Underwater Demolition Team One. This team saw action at the close of the Korean War, during which time he commanded an explosive ordinance disposal unit. On June 25, 1955, he married Louise Madison of Webster, and at the completion of his naval service in 1956, they moved to High Point, where he was employed in the furniture manufacturing industry. He was actively involved in both St. Mary's Episcopal Church and St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, of which he was a founding parishioner and served as senior warden. He was a certified dive instructor who taught scuba for many years. An avid swimmer, he competed in AAU Masters events and held state records in backstroke. He was instrumental in the founding of Sheraton Hills Swim Club and Oak Hallow Yacht Club in High Point, and competed in sailing events throughout the Southeast. He also competed in triathlons until his 60s. An Eagle Scout, he was an Explorer Scout leader in the 1960s. In 1993, he and his wife retired to Webster, where he became active in Sylva First United Methodist Church, serving as an officer in the Jackson County Historical Society and working part time at the Great Smoky Mountains Railway Depot in Dillsboro, handling reservations until May of this year. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by one brother, Charles, and one son, C.G. "Chuck" of Bedford III. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Louise Madison Bedford; one son, John Charley Bedford; two daughters, Ann B. Mellish Rich of Silver Spring, Md., and Julia B. The Rev. Roger Stewman officiated. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was the oldest living member of Greens Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, John A. He was preceded in death by twin infants, a son, Billy, and a grandson; and one sister, Margaret Batson. She retired from Jackson County Schools and was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church, where she was very active for many years in the children's department. She was a homemaker and was active in her children's activities and team sports.
