When possible, obituaries should be sent to the Herald from the funeral home. Information received will be placed in our standard obituary format.

We publish names of all of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

A brief history of the deceased is included. We include information on their employment, as well as professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

Queen Queen

School board chair, Queen, dies at age 53

Martha Kaye Cabe Queen, 53, of Mitchell Road, Sylva, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, in Mission-St. Joseph's Health System in Asheville after living with cancer for 17 years.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at First Baptist Church of Sylva. The Rev. Drs. Wanda Kidd and Wayne Hill officiated. Burial was at Old Field Cemetery. Pallbearers were Cory Oren, Tim Kuhn, Josh LaVere, Tim Blekicki, James Aust, Ian Cotterman and David Carver.

She was serving her second term as chairman of the Jackson County Board of Education.

Daughter of Lucille Hooper Bryson of Sylva and the late Winston Cabe and stepdaughter of the late Jennings Bryson, she was a native of Jackson County. She graduated from Sylva-Webster High School and Western Carolina University with degrees in social work and a master's degree in public affairs. She was a member of Phi Gamma Mu and Zeta Tau Alpha sororities.

A lifelong Democrat, she was active in the Jackson County Democrat Party. She was a former deputy clerk of the Jackson County Clerk of Court's Office. She was employed for 21 years with the Jackson County Department of Social Services, first as a child support enforcement agent and then as a social worker in childrens' service. She retired from DSS in 2000.

She was instrumental in the establishment of Southwestern Child Development's after-school program; the initial REACH agency for victims of abuse and domestic violence; Jackson County Council on Women; the HUB, a model alternative school; Our Children Today and Tomorrow, from which SmartStart/Region A Partnership for Children developed; and the Jackson County Family Resource Center.

She was also active in Women in Government, the American Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery program and Smoky Mountain Mavens. In 2000 the Western North Carolina Women's Coalition named her one of the region's 10 outstanding women.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are two sons, Nathan and Blake Queen, both of Sylva; and two brothers, Bruce and Brian Cabe of Lawrenceville, Ga.

Albert Bennett Jr.

Albert "Doc" Bennett Jr., 54, of Cherokee's Birdtown community, died unexpectedly Friday, July 12, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 15, in Goose Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Arthur Locust officiated. Burial was in Blythe-Owl Family Cemetery. Pallbearers were Boyd Owle, Christian Owle, Lloyd Owle, Jim Owle, Bobby Owle, Robbie Squirrel and Nat Taylor.

A native of Wichita, Kan., he had lived in Cherokee since 1950. He was a son of the late Albert Frederick and Pauline Blythe Bennett Sr.

Survivors are four sisters, Cheryl B. Tolley and Beverly Bennett, both of Cherokee, Sharon B. Owl of Colony, Okla., and Gayle B. Norris of Phoenix.

Bonnie Styles

Bonnie Gunter Styles, 83, of Whittier's Dicks Creek community, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, in Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Johnny Swanger and Ricky Conner officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

A native of Swain County, she lived most of her life in Jackson County. She retired from Dollar General Store as manager, was a member of Dicks Creek Baptist Church and a hospital auxiliary volunteer at Harris Regional Hospital, serving as president for one term.

She was a daughter of the late Zeb Gunter and Eliza Brendle Gunter Blanton.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Leona Gunter Bradley, Oma Gunter Oxner, Jane Elders Ward and Verneta Gunter; and one brother, Enoch Elders.

Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Thad Styles; two daughters, Mildred Sutton of Dillsboro and Pauline Beck of Whittier; two sons, Clifford Styles of Gallatin, Tenn., and Charles Styles of Lebanon, Tenn.; one sister, Doshia Moore of Candler; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.



Ollie Bryant

Ollie Biddix Bryant, 77, of 193 Old Asheville Highway, Sylva, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Skyland Care Center following a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 12, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Larry Cagle, Michael Queen and Dewey Franklin officiated. Burial was at Parris Cemetery. Pallbearers were Timmy Biddix, Tommy Biddix, Charles Biddix, Mark Biddix, Rick Berry, Mike Cochran and Lester Hoyle.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Rufus and Teresa Woods Shuler. She was formerly a cook at the Jarrett House.

Surviving are four daughters, Nettie Hall, Janie Hoyle, Emma Biddix and Margaret Smith, all of Sylva; four sons, James, Lyndon, Jackie and Donald Biddix, all of Sylva; one sister, Lillie Cagle of Sylva; 22 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.



Arthur Nelson

Arthur W. Nelson Sr., 65, of 1007 Wayah Road, Franklin, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at his home from cancer.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Born March 28, 1937, in New Kensington, Pa., he moved to Miami Beach, Fla., in his early 30s. There he served 17-and-a-half years with the Miami Beach Police Department. He retired at age 50 and moved to Tallahassee, Fla., running his own lawn service.

He and his wife of 19 years, Diane Nelson, moved in 1998 to Franklin, where he was a member of Franklin Men's Golf Association. He was a son of Stella Diehl and the late Cecil Nelson.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Joel "Jake" Nelson and Dougie Diehl; and one son, Arthur W. Nelson Jr.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one son, Robert Joel Nelson; one daughter, Lorraine Leah Martin; five brothers, Denny Diehl, Derek Diehl, Darrel Diehl, Billy Nelson and Ron Nelson; one sister, Debra "Matoodle" Caffacus; and two grandchildren.

Talley Crary

Talley N. Crary, 97, of Stuart, Fla., died Monday, July 15, 2002, at her home.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at First United Methodist Church of Stuart, Fla. The Rev. Mike Shirley will officiate.

A native of Orangburg, S.C., she had been a resident of Stuart, Fla., since 1928. She was the oldest member of First United Methodist Church there and a member of the Untied Methodist Women. She was past president of PEO, the women's club, the Garden Club and past member of Martin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Evans Crary Sr.; and two sisters, Sophie McKewn and Cyril Stewart.

Surviving are two sons, Evans Crary Jr. and W.F. "Rick" Crary, both of Stuart; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Flora Jenkins

Flora Mae Webb Jenkins 79, of Wahalla, S.C., died Monday, July 15, 2002, in Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at Cashiers Church of God. The Rev. Alger Galloway officiated. Burial was at Hamburg Cemetery. A native of Haywood County, she was a member of the Stumphouse Church of God in Wahalla, S.C. She was a daughter of the late George and Elsie Webb. She was preceded in death by her husband, Austin Jenkins; two brothers; and two sisters.

Surviving are four sons, Earl Jenkins of Brevard, James Jenkins of Cashiers, Dewey Jenkins of Seneca, S.C., and Larry Jenkins of Westminister, S.C.; three daughters, Linda Rice of Cashiers, Margaret Harper of Walhalla, S.C., and Phyllis McCall of Mountain Rest, S.C.; two brothers, Ernest Webb of Westminster, S.C., and James Lloyd Webb of Tryon; two sisters, Gertrude Coggins of Cullowhee and Pauline McConnell of Columbia, S.C.; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Thomas Rogers

Thomas Alvin Rogers Sr., 81, of Cashiers, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 12, at Cashiers Baptist Church. The Revs. Tommy Madden and Johnny Norris officiated. Burial was at Upper Zachary Cemetery in Cashiers.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County before moving to South Carolina 15 years ago. He was a member of Cashiers Baptist Church and Jimmy Dillard VFW Post 10685. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was former owner/operator of Cashiers Shell, former chief of the Cashiers Fire Department and former member of Glenville Cashiers Rescue Squad.

He was the son of the late David Hugh and Arlee Dillard Rogers.

He was preceded in death by one son, Thomas A. Rogers Jr.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Annie Ridley Rogers; one son, Richard Rogers of Glenville; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mary Alma Tweed

Mary Alma Tweed, 91, of Sylva, died Monday, July 15, 2002.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, at Sylva First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Paul Christy officiated. Burial was at Keener Cemetery. Pallbearers were Preston Tinsley, Buddy Owen, Tommy Sutton, George Stillwell, Phillip Harris, Walter Wilson, Tim Wilson and Brandon Harris.

A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late John H. and Madge B. Wilson. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Sylva, where she was a member of the Afternoon Circle, Sunday school teacher for 35 years and served on the administrative board. She was a lifetime member of the Sylva Garden Club and Twentieth Century Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, E.E. Tweed; one sister, Hicks Wilson; and two brothers, Andrew B. Wilson and John H. Wilson Jr.

Surviving are one daughter, Nancy Watkins of Knoxville, Tenn.; two brothers, Wade Wilson of Dillsboro and Hal Wilson of Brentwood, Tenn.; three sisters, Madge Webber of Riverton, Wyo., Agnes Johnson of Waycross, Ga., and Matilda Lavange of Waynesville; and two grandsons.

Joyce Beasley

Joyce Yvonne Martin Beasley, 65, of Cleveland, Ga., formerly of Franklin, died of cancer Friday, July 12, 2002, at her daughter's residence.

The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.

A retired school teacher with 33 years of service, she was a member of Wesleyanna United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Esther Jewell Castleberry Martin and Floyd Fredward Martin.

Surviving are two sons, Alton N. Beasley Jr. of Franklin and Robert Wayne Beasley of Spencer; one daughter, Pamela Joyce Owen of Cleveland, Ga.; two sisters, Sylvia M. Warmack of Thomasville, Ga., and Marilyn M. McGahee of Juliette, Ga.; one brother, Wayne R. Martin of Cleveland, Ga.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
