Drew HamiltonDrew "Trooper Drew" Gatewood Hamilton, 14, of U.S. 74, Whittier, died of cancer Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at his residence.A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 6, at Smokey Mountain Elementary School gymnasium. James McNab and Father Henry Burton officiated. The burial service was held at Rockdale Baptist Church Cemetery in Barkers Creek. Born in Lexington, Ky., he had lived in Jackson County for the past seven years. He was a rising ninth-grader at Smoky Mountain High School and attended Smokey Mountain Elementary School. He was a New Century Scholar and in the Beta Club. |

Surviving are his parents, Margarett Hamilton of Whittier and George Gatewood Hamilton III of Georgetown, Ky.; one brother, Austin Gatewood Hamilton of Whittier; and maternal grandparents, Leonard "Pappy" and Martha Watson of Whittier.

O'Meda RubinO'Meda Bowers Rubin of Grove Road, Webster, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at her residence after an extended illness.Services were held at 9 p.m. Saturday, July 6, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Mike Dellinger and Ray McCall officiated. Burial will be at a later date in Westover Memorial Park, Augusta, Ga. A native of Marietta, Ga., she had lived in Jackson County since 1985. She was a retired cosmetologist, a member of Webster Baptist Church and daughter of the late Paul and Agnes Hair Bowers. Surviving is her husband of 27 years, Donald Rubin. McMahan, 73, of Sylva's Savannah community, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Jefferson City, Tenn.A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. Monday, July 8, at Zion Hill Baptist Church and Cemetery in Pumpkintown community. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Al and Adam McMahan; one sister, Mae Young; and parents, James A. and Ida E. Higdon McMahan. Surviving are four daughters, Maureen M. Moore of Everett, Wash., Cathy Begnoche of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Jeri Wiggins of Washington and Lucinda Joseph of Maryville, Wash.; three sons, Brandon Guy McMahan of Everett, Wash., Guy William McMahan of Belfair, Wash., and R.L. McMahan of Everett, Wash.; one brother, Delois McMahan of Darrington, Wash.; one sister, Eva Bishop of Spring, Texas; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Farrar Funeral Home in Jefferson City, Tenn., was in charge of arrangements. Carnell MullCarnell Mull, 63, of Pontiac Lane, Tuckasegee, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 1, at Sols Creek Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Clifford Willis and Tommy Holden officiated. Burial was in Clyde M. Bryson Memorial Cemetery. A native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life, he retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation's Highway Maintenance Department. He was a son of the late Milas and Leora Mathis Mull and a veteran of the N.C. National Guard. He was preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn Mull. Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Una Lee Bryson Mull; one son, Randall Carnell Mull Sr. of Hendersonville; three sisters, Venia Mathis of Sylva, Birta Smothers of Pineville and Erma Dean Hawkins of Waynesville; two brothers, Alvin Mull of Lake Toxaway and Ed Mull of Lincolnton; and three grandchildren. Carl FrizzellCarl Kellie Frizzell, 80, of Little Savannah Road, Sylva, died of cancer Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at his home.Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 6, at Little Savannah Baptist Church. The Revs. Robert Blanton, Kent Laddermilk and Robert Fernandez officiated. Burial was in Carl Frizzell Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers were Larry Crawford, Doug Jones, Ricky Crawford, Nathan Frizzell, Russell Ensley and Carl Frizzell. A native of Jackson County, he lived most of his life on Little Savannah. He was the oldest son of the late Norman and Ethel Buchanan Frizzell. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Jason and Rufus Paul Frizzell; and four sisters, Mary Elizabeth and Janie Sue Frizzell, Aileen Orr and Tulin Middleton. A member and former Sunday school director at Little Savannah Baptist Church, he was a 1941 graduate of Webster High School. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater at Fiji, New Guinea and the Philippines with the 205th Battalion Anti-Aircraft Unit. He worked for a number of years with Sossamon Furniture Co. before retiring from the mail operations center at Western Carolina University. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Margaret Ensley Frizzell; three sons, David Carl Frizzell, Ricky Lee Frizzell and Kenneth Wayne Frizzell, all of Sylva; two brothers, Earl Frizzell of Sylva and Vearl Frizzell of Lexington; three sisters, Mae Nicholson of Lexington, Leigh Barker of Clemmons and Nina Crawford of Sylva; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson. John DentonJohn William Denton, 87, of Archer, Fla., died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Hospice House in Gainesville, Fla.A memorial marker will be placed in Holly Hill Cemetery in Holly Hill, S.C., next to his wife, Nancy R. Denton, who died in 1994. A native of Jackson County's Wilmot community, he graduated from Western Carolina University and worked as a plant supervisor for Exxon Petroleum on the island of Aruba for 27 years, then for Chemco Construction Co. for 10 years. He moved to Archer from North Augusta, S.C., about eight years ago. He was a mason and member of the First Baptist Church in North Augusta. Surviving are two sons, John Gregory Denton of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Phil A. Denton of Archer, Fla.; one sister, Eva Nell Ward of Whittier; three brothers, Harold Denton of Gadsden, Ala., Lynn Denton of Christopher, Ill., and Gene Denton of Ranier, Ore.; and three grandchildren. Belle AllisonBelle Allison, 98, of Clermont, Fla., formerly of Sylva, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Westminster Care of Clermont.She established the Tuckasegee Beauty Shop in Sylva and owned and operated the business for several years. She was the wife of the late Sam Allison. Surviving are one son, Robert Allison of Clermont; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Kurfiss Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Robert TaylorRobert William Taylor, 82, of Franklin, died Monday, July 1, 2002, in a Clay County Care Center in Hayesville.Private services will be held at a later date. A native of Macon County, he was a son of the late James Edley and Annie Elizabeth Young Taylor. He was a self-employed farmer and a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel May Dills Taylor, who died in 1995; two sons, William Wade and Wilford Lee Taylor; and five brothers. Surviving are two sons, Wayne Robert Taylor of Orlando, Fla., and Frank James Taylor of Franklin; two daughters, Linda Jean Taylor of Columbia, S.C., and Carol Ann Taylor of Fletcher; one brother, Paul Zachary Taylor of Sedro Woolly, Wash.; two sisters, Jean Norton of Silver City, N.M., and Bessie Mae Gregory of Franklin; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Kenneth LoweKenneth W. Lowe, 59, of Sylva, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at his residence.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Clifford Parker and David Souderes will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens with graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post 104. A native of Jackson County, he retired from the U.S. Army. He served in Vietnam for two tours. He also retired from Security Force Inc. with Dayco Southern as a security supervisor. He was a member of Old Savannah Baptist Church, American Legion Post 104, Carolina Mountain Telephone Pioneers and a former Boy Scout master for Troop 999 in Sylva. He was a son of the late Joshua and Edna Burns Lowe. Surviving are his wife, Frances Lowe; two sons, Mark Gates of Weaverville and Chad Gates of Sylva; three brothers, R.L. Lowe of Crescent City, Fla., Eugene Lowe of Bryson City and Perk Lowe of Green Acres, Wash.; five sisters, Emma Allan of Lutesville, Mo., Ruth Beck and Della Mae Lowe of Sylva, Katie Cooper of Madison, Miss., and Susie Sandridge, of Kansas City, Mo.; and seven grandchildren. The Rev. John Reid officiated. Burial was in Greens Creek Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Greens Creek Baptist Church. She was the last of seven children of the late Estus and Iva Lee Sisk Trantham. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lenoir Greene, who died in 1942. Surviving are one daughter, Ginny Beck of Sylva; one son, Furman "Smokey" Greene of Spartanburg, S.C.; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Peggy CoryPeggy O. Cory, 70, of Whittier's Barkers Creek community, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after an extended illness.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Rockdale Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Harry Vance and Dr. Bill Chapman will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A native of Frankfort, Ind., she moved to Jackson County from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 1988. She retired as an oral surgeon assistant with Dr. Porter Gott in Florida. She was a daughter of the late Melvin and Lottie Roth Ohlemacher. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Donald F. Cory; one daughter, Donella Louise Graham of Nashua, N.H.; one son, Steve J. Cory of Whittier; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church for the services.
