Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Nick Toineeta

Nick A. "Junior" Toineeta, 66, of Cherokee, died July 5, 2003, at Mission-St. Joseph's Hospital of cancer.

Funeral services were held at Cherokee Church Of God at 2 p.m. Monday, July 7. The Revs. George Polecat, Arvil Nations and A.J. Skelton officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

A full-blood Cherokee, he was a member of Cherokee Church of God. He served in the U.S. Army, where he was an Airborne Ranger, Class of 1955. Following his military service, he worked as an electrician and heavy equipment operator.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mattie Youngdeer Toineeta and Arneach Toineeta, three brothers; Jeremiah Toineeta, Joe Toineeta and Jefferson Toineeta; and one sister, Geneva T. Ammons.

Surviving are one son, Gary Toineeta of Cherokee; two daughers, Brenda Toineeta of Arlington, Va., and Susan Toineeta of Cherokee; three sisters, Alice T. Littlejohn, Lillian T. Jumper and Rena T. Cooper, all of Cherokee; one brother, Joshua Toineeta of Cherokee; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Carl Stanford

Carl H. "Buddy" Stanford, 72, of Mitchell Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Friday, July 4, 2003, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Avery Brown and Delos Brown officiated. Burial was in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, where he had lived most of his life, he was a businessman having owned several businesses. He also was a retired banker having worked with First Union Bank. He was co-owner of Haywood Appliance in Clyde at the time of his death.

He was a son of Alice Parker Stanford of New Bern and the late Claude H. Stanford. He was a U.S. Army veteran, member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church, a woodworker and basketmaker.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 49 years, Delia Brown Stanford; one sister, Claudia Darden of New Bern; and one brother, Gary Stanford of Williamsburg, Pa.

Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross in Sylva, Lovedale Baptist Church Cemetery or to one's favorite charity.

James McDevitt

James Eugene McDevitt, 75, of Cashiers, died Wednesday, July 2, 2003, in Highland-Cashiers Hospital.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, at St. Jude's Catholic Church.

Moody-Connolly Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Hooper

Charles William Hooper Sr., 86, of Cashiers, died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at Mission-St. Joseph's Health System in Asheville.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 4, at Cashiers Baptist Church. The Revs. Art Fowler, Johnny Norris and J.C. Robinson officiated. Burial followed in Hamburg Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he owned and operated Hooper's Grocery in Cashiers for 37 years, was a member of Cashiers Baptist Church and was a former Men's Adult Sunday school teacher. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and son of the late Ephrim M. and Lathia Bryson Hooper.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Christine Robinson Hooper; one son, Charles William Hooper Jr. of Cashiers; two daughters, Harriett Bruno of Gurley, Ala., and Kimberly Mendenhall of Cashiers; one sister, Florence Moses of Horse Shoe; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Johnson Owle

Johnson Lee Owle, 69, of Cherokee's Birdtown community, died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, at Cherokee United Methodist Church. The Rev. Steve Phillipi officiated. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery.

A native of Cherokee, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the son of the late Joseph and Lillie Mae Bradley Owle.

Survivors are one son, John Owle of Cherokee; and one daughter, Becky Morgan of San Francisco.
Moody Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Henrietta Starr

Henrietta Leggett Starr, 64, of Bryson City's Sawmill Creek community, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at her residence.

Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 7, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. The Rev. Jimmy Franks officiated.

A native of Florida, she had been a resident of Swain County for the past 12 years. She retired from Orange County Public School System as a bus driver with 29 years of service. She attended Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Douglas H. Starr; three sons, Douglas Starr and Ronald E. Starr, both of Bryson City, and Gerald Starr of Orlando, Fla.; one daughter, Theresa S. Hiatt of Kissimmee, Fla.; one sister, Jean May of Oxford, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to WestCare Hospice, 132 Sylva Plaza Sylva, N.C. 28779.

Venie Mathis

Venie M. Mathis, 83, of Sylva's Ochre Hill community, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. Johnny Norris will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native of Jackson County, she was a member of Sols Creek Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Milas and Leora Mathis Mull.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Mathis; an infant son, Marlon Mathis; one brother, Carnell Mull; and one sister, Evelyn Mull.

Surviving are a daughter, Leona Nicholson of Sylva; one son, Endlon Mathis of Tuckasegee; two sisters, Berta Smothers of Pineville and Erma Hawkins of Waynesville; and two brothers, Edward Mull of High Shoals and Alvin Mull of Lake Toxaway.

The family was to received friends Wednesday, July 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.

Judy Crawford

A memorial service for Judy Bryson Crawford, 56, of Ranzy Crawford Road, Sylva, who died Saturday, June 28, 2003, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 13, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.
