CWO4 (U.S. Army, retired) R.V. Deitz of Sylva's East Fork community died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at his residence after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 24, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Father James P. Cahill and the Rev. Robert Blanton officiated. Burial was in East Fork Cemetery with military rites conducted by a detachment from Fort Bragg Army Base. A native of Jackson County, he served in the U.S. Army and was a career soldier. He retired as a CWO4 after 27 honorable years of service, serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Among his awards and decorations are the Soldier's Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Bronze Star. After military retirement, he worked as an electrician with the I.B.E.W. in Mobile, Ala. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sylva and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Son of the late Hanley and Mary Etta Morgan Deitz, he was a master gardener. |

He was preceded in death by one son, Christopher R. Deitz; and three brothers, Taylor, Jesse and Woodrow Deitz.
Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Charlotte R. Deitz; four daughters, Catherine D. Shibilske, Cheryl D. Stanford, Deborah D. Lyons and Cynthia D. Printz, all of Mobile, Ala.; two sons, Stephen R. Deitz and Richard V. Deitz, both of Atlanta; three sisters, Margie Buchanan, Georgia Lewis and Emma Lee Buchanan, all of Sylva; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. |

Davey SmithDavey Lynn Smith, 20, of Cherokee, died Sunday, June 24, 2001.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, at Antioch Baptist Church. The Revs. Denny Crowe, Roland Whittaker and James "Bo" Parris officiated. Burial was in Bigmeat Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, he was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and a member of N.C. Bear Hunters Association. He was the son of James and Kimmy Smith and stepson of Norman Jean Smith, all of Cherokee. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James and Celia Smith; paternal great-grandparents, Larch and Dixie Taylor; great-grandparents, Ed and Margaret Jackson; and maternal grandparents, Robert and Charlotte Bigmeat. Surviving are his paternal grandparents, Charles and Lucille Smith of the home; maternal grandparents, Frank and Elizabeth Jackson; two brothers, Bobby Joe Smith and James D. Smith; three sisters, Fecelia Smith, Celia Smith and CeAna Jackson; and two stepsisters, Fashia Teesateskie and Jill Swayney. Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Jeanette CarsonJeanette Carson, 60, of Bryson City, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Swain County Hospital.A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 23, in the Chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home, Bryson City. The Rev. Jim Cochran officiated. A native of Pickens County, S.C., and a former resident of Anderson, S.C., before moving to Bryson City six years ago, she was a daughter of the late Johnny and Virgie Bice. Surviving are her husband, Harry L. Carson; two sons, Tom Wade Brown of Peoria, Ill., and Kenneth Hernon Harbin of Columbia, S.C.; two brothers, Michael Bice and James Bice, both of Anderson, S.C.; four sisters, Louise Lollis, Marlene Rick and Evelyn Simpson, all of Anderson, S.C., and Joann Bell of Atlanta; and one granddaughter. Mary FreemanMary "Mem" Sneed Freeman, 83, of Cherokee, died Monday, June 25, 2001, in Cherokee Indian Hospital following a brief illness.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) in the Chapel of Crisp Funeral Home, Bryson City. The Rev. Bobby Watts will officiate. Burial will be in Cam Sneed Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Nathan Robinson, Eddie Welch, Jack Bradley, Mike Parker, Robert Cooper and Kirk Saunooke. A lifelong resident of the Qualla Boundary, she was a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee. Upon graduation from Cherokee Indian School in 1937, she attended Asheville Beauty Academy. As a young lady, she and her twin sister, Martha, sang on the Grand Ole Opry. Her father, Manco Sneed, was a renowned fiddler, as was she, playing the guitar, banjo and piano as well. She was a native craftsperson, specializing in Indian beadwork. She was preceded in death by her parents, Manco and Rosebud Beck Sneed; her twin sister, Martha Sneed Bradley; two other sisters, Irene Entrekin and Ella Melaro; and two brothers, Lawrence and Russell. Surviving are her husband of 62 years, "Buck"; one son, Bill; one sister, Dakota Brewer of Asheville; and one grandson. Matthew KlonkowskiMatthew Laurel Klonkowski, 20, of Sylva, formerly of Franklin, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, unexpectedly in Swain County.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Bates will officiate. Burial will be in Rush Cemetery. A native of Racine, Wisc., he was a son of Laurel G. Klonkowski Jr. and Kay B. Miller Klonkowski. He graduated in 1999 from Franklin High School with honors and attended Western Carolina University. He achieved the Status of Star in the Boy Scouts and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth M. Klonkowski. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, John R. and Gerry Miller of Franklin; paternal grandfather, Laurel G. Klonkowski Sr. of Racine, Wisc.; maternal great-grandmother, Goldie Graham of Franklin; and one brother, Jason Klonkowski of Stoughton, Mass. Pearl FradyPearl Mae Rogers Frady, 88, of Tuckasegee, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Skyland Care Center in Sylva.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 23, in the Chapel of Garrett Funeral Home in Waynesville. The Rev. Truitt Owen officiated. Burial was in Sunburst Cemetery. Pallbearers were Brent McCracken, Blaine Parker, David Owen, Lon Rogers, Terry Morgan and Chris Rogers. She was born Nov. 30, 1912, in Cecil township to the late Lon and Blaine Reece Rogers. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Frady; three sisters, Myrtle Morgan, Edna Queen and Ruth Stiles; and three brothers, James Rogers, Delmar Rogers and Ed Rogers. Surviving are two sons, L.C. Frady of Statesville and George Frady of Tuckasegee; one daughter, Reba McCracken of Bethel; two sisters, Hazel Parker of Canton and Bertha Wall of Morganton; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Jamy JenksJames "Jamy" Jenks, 27, of Cherokee died unexpectedly Wednesday, June 20, 2001, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 25, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Howard Brown and Neil Ferguson officiated. Burial was at Tahquette Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, he was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and an Eagle Scout. A 1992 graduate of Cherokee High School, he was a member of the Division 1A state runner-up basketball team. He was a recent graduate of Southwestern Community College with a degree in computers and electronics. He was the son of Leon James and Margaret Tahquette Jenks of Cherokee. Surviving are four sisters, Tinker Jenks and Mary Ann Fox, both of Cherokee, Tuzie Despain of Norman, Okla., and Bunny Cornelius of DePere, Wis.; and two brothers, Eddie Jenks of Cherokee and Bobby Raines of Cherokee. A native of South Carolina and a lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a member of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Fred and Leone Bryson Hooper. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Herman, Lloyd and Lyman Hooper; and three sisters, Callie Bryson, Saddie Reeves and Leauna Hooper. Surviving are two daughters, Jennie Lynch of Baltimore, Md., and Glenda Blanton of Hendersonville; two sons, Robert Hooper of Pisgah Forest and Wayne Hooper of Fletcher; two brothers, Raymond Hooper and Clyde Hooper, both of Glenville; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. |
