The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to readers.

When possible, obituaries should be sent to the Herald from the funeral home. Information received will be placed in our standard obituary format.

We publish names of all of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

A brief history of the deceased is included. We include information on their employment, as well as professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

Cowan Cowan

Delia Cowan

Margaret Cordelia "Delia" Hall Cowan, 105, of Sylva's East Fork community, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, at East Fork Baptist Church, of which she was a member for more than 80 years. Curtis Buchanan officiated. Burial was in East Fork Cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was born July 22, 1896. Daughter of the late Loranzia Dow and Lily Ann Buchanan Hall, she was the last child in a family of six.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roystan Duffield Cowan II, who died in 1963; two daughters, Frankie Aileen Cowan and Bennie Settlemyre; one son, R.D. Cowan; and two grandchildren.

Surviving are three sons, Leo Cowan of Tuckasegee and Lloyd Cowan and Roger Bryant Cowan, both of Sylva; one daughter, Bernice Cowan of Yuba City, Calif.; 21 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

Walter Bryson

Walter "Walt" Bryson, 96, of Cashiers, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 23, at Bryant Funeral Home in Highlands. The Revs. Johnny Norris and Matt Schuler officiated. Burial was in Double Springs Cemetery on Cullowhee Mountain. Grandsons were pallbearers.

He was a native of Jackson County, a former resident of the Long Creek community of Mount Rest, S.C., and a resident of Eckerd Care Nursing Facility in Highlands. He was a retired farmer and a member of Long Creek Baptist Church in Mount Rest. He was a son of the late Charlie and Margaret Wilkes Bryson.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Sally Underwood Bryson and Georgia Butler Bryson; two sons, Ralph Bryson and Herbert C. Bryson; two brothers, Bud and Bascom Bryson; and five sisters, Bessie Mae Woods, Lilly and Ivy Coggins, Mary Jane Underwood and Mellie Wilson. Surviving are one brother, Richard Bryson of Mount Rest, S.C.; one son, Hayes Bryson of Cashiers; five daughters, Geneva Hooper and Mammie Lou Peeler, both of Cullowhee, Juanita Bryson of Downey, Calif., Emma Villilla of Norwalk, Calif., and Chloe Bevill of Asheville; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Rhoda Jenkins

Rhoda Lucille Jenkins, 80, of 146 Vermillian Drive, Sylva, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 24, at Green Hills Cemetery. The Rev. Jeffrey Hober officiated.

A native of Bryson City, she had lived most of her life in Buncombe County. She was a daughter of the late Pete and Emma Jane Ball Jenkins.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Thurman Jenkins, and one sister, Rosie Deitz.

Surviving are one son, Edward James Jenkins of Asheville; two sisters, Pauline Haney and Dora Hawkins, both of Asheville; and one grandson.

Anders-Rice Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



William Lambert

William Van Lambert, 40, of Cherokee, died Thursday, June 20, 2002.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Sunday, June 23, in Tahquette-Seay Cemetery. Ray Kinsland officiated. Pallbearers were Ryan and Robin Young, Mike Holt, Eric Lambert, Dewayne Lambert and Darrell Lambert.

A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, he was a son of the late Herbert A. Lambert.

Surviving are his mother, Jean Bushyhead of Cherokee; three brothers, Darrell Gene Lambert and Robert Allen Lambert, both of Cherokee, and Glenn Joseph Lambert of Anderson, S.C.; and one sister, Minda Ross of Cherokee.

Taylor Carroll

Taylor Bayne "Ty" Carroll, 29, of Bonanza Road, Cashiers, died of cancer Monday, June 17, 2002, at his residence.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Cashiers. The Revs. John Southern and Steve Himes officiated. Burial was in the church memory garden with military rites conducted by a detachment from the U.S. Navy.

He was born in Atlanta and lived the past 20 years in Cashiers. He attended Blue Ridge School in Virginia and graduated from Blue Ridge School in Cashiers. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Gulf War.

Surviving are his parents, Taylor and Charlotte Carroll; one brother, Brooks; and two grandmothers, Eugenia Taylor Harrelson of Winston-Salem and Josephine Casler of Richmond, Va.

Ned Hawks

Ned Armfield Hawks, 92, of Morristown, Tenn., died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospice Center in Knoxville, Tenn.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 11, in Jefferson City, Tenn., at Farrar Funeral Home. The Rev. Lloyd Twitchell officiated. Burial was held June 12 at Glenwood Cemetery in Powell, Tenn.

A native of Galax, Va., he graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and N.C. State University. He taught agriculture in North Carolina for 42 years, 23 of those years were at Sylva, later Sylva-Webster High School, where he announced Friday night football games. He retired in 1975.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 12 brothers and sisters.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Helen Worthington Hawks; one son, Brent Hawks of Swannanoa; one daughter, Donna Blake of Strawberry Plains, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.
