Beatrice BrysonBeatrice Fowler Bryson, 91, of Webster, died May 27, 2003.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, at Webster Baptist Church. The Revs. Michael Dellinger and Ray McCall officiated. Burial was at Hamburg Cemetery in Glenville. Pallbearers were Tommy Norton, Wayne Bryson, Joseph Moore, Sam Summers, Mitch Paugh and John McNeely. She was born Nov. 25, 1911, in Glenville to the late William S. and Fannie Stewart Fowler. She was a member of Webster Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She began teaching Sunday school in high school and continued throughout her life. |

She was active at McKee Training Lab in Cullowhee, where she was PTA president. She was a volunteer with Harris Regional Hospital Auxiliary for many years.
She served as secretary and treasurer for the WMU at Webster for 20 years. In 1984 she was honored for 50 years of membership in the Extension Homemakers Club, where she helped organize and develop the Webster Homemakers Club. She conducted many workshops teaching tatting knitting, quilting, needlework, crochet, canning and gardening and won many blue ribbons through the Home Demonstration Club. She was preceded in death by one brother, William Woodrow Fowler; an infant sister, Ola Lee Fowler; and her husband of 65 years, Joseph Samuel Bryson, who died in 1995. Surviving are three daughters, Karen B. Frazier of Asheville, Jackie B. McIntosh of Charlotte and Delma Jo Summers of Glenville; one sister, Arlene F. Evans; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Memorials may be made to Webster Baptist Church Building Fund, Webster, N.C. 28788; or Hamburg Cemetery Fund, Hamburg Baptist Church, Glenville, N.C. 28736. Dimoteen HowardDimoteen Howard, 69, of Rochester, Wash., died May 21, 2003, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash.Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Sticklin Funeral Chapel. Pastor Derrill Corbin officiated. Burial followed in Grand Mound Cemetery. Born Feb. 25, 1934, in Tuckasegee to Thadous D. and Elma Mathis Mathews, she was raised and attended schools in Jackson County. She married William R. Howard on Jan. 5, 1951, in Pickins County, S.C. The family moved to Chehalis, Wash., in 1956 and settled in Rochester 27 years ago. |

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are one son, Randall R. Howard of Toledo, Wash.; one daughter, Patricia K. Caywood of Centralia, Wash.; three brothers, Clinton Mathews of Centralia, Garrett Mathews of Elberton, Ga., and Grover Mathews of Talbott, Tenn; two sisters, Mazie Bentley of Westwood, Calif., and Lydia Mathis of Sylva; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Johnny Cucumber officiated. Burial was in Shell Family Cemetery. A native of Swain County, he was a son of the late Wayne L. and Mary Alice Owle Armachain. Surviving are two daughters, Mariguen Davis and Martha Arch, both of Cherokee; one brother, Michael N. Milholen of Cherokee; one half-brother, Aaron Cucumber of Cherokee; and two grandchildren. John HooperJohn Kenneth "Ken" Hooper Sr., 83, of Cope Creek Road, Sylva, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, in Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 2, at Scotts Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Rich Peoples and John Reid officiated. Burial was in Old Field Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from Mead Corp. with 27 years of service. An Army Air Corp veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Waynesville American Legion Post 47 and the Mike Martin VFW Post 9493 and member of the Adult Men Sunday School Class. He was a son of the late William A. and Hester Melton Hooper. He was preceded in death by one son, Roger Keith Hooper; three sisters; and two brothers. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Margie Buchanan Hooper; one daughter, Shawn H. Petrini of Cary; one son, Chief Master Sgt. John Kenneth Hooper Jr. of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; and one granddaughter. William OwensWilliam "Bill" Frederick Owens Sr., 62, of Whittier's Qualla community, died Friday, May 30, 2003, in Harris Regional Hospital.Funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sylva, of which he was a member. Father Ray Williams officiated. Burial was in Swain Memorial Park. A native of Ohio and a longtime resident of Florida, he had lived in Jackson County for the past two months. He was a retired from Southern Bell Telephone Co. with 35 years of service. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Milton, Fla. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Ruth A. Owens; one son, William Frederick Owens Jr. of Milton, Fla.; two brothers, Paul and Jim Owens of Orlando, Fla.; and one sister, Jenny Jager of Hollywood, Fla. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Keener; one brother, Calvin Mills; and one sister, Grace Mills. The Revs. Charles Carnes, Harry Vance, Randy Hyatt and Larry Cagle officiated. Burial was in Cagle Cemetery. Pallbearers were Donald Gates, Steve Buchanan, Carroll Cagle, Russ Cagle, Bill Cagle and Roger Melton. Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Green and Doyle Buchanan. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she had worked at Wear-Blanket as an inspector and was a member of Locust Field Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Earl H. and Valerie Blanton Cagle. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Burnette Cagle and twins Frank and Will Cagle; and two sisters, Artie and Wilma Cagle. Surviving are her stepmother, Lillie Shuler Cagle of Sylva; four daughters, Linda Buchanan, Shirley Buchanan, Sandy Frizzell and Crystal B. Gibson, all of Sylva; four sisters, Jessie Shields, Annie Dee Moore, Martha Lou Buchanan and Mary Sue Coggins; two brothers, Earl Cagle Jr. and Allen Cagle, both of Sylva; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

A native of Transylvania County, he was the son of the late Gene Eggert and Marie Hill Garrett and was a former resident of Jackson County. Surviving are his wife, Linda Eggert; one stepson, Dale Holden of Brevard; one stepdaughter, Celena Navera of Brevard; and five grandchildren. The Rev. Billy Stiles officiated. Burial was in Many Forks Baptist Church Cemetery in Gumlog, Ga. A native of Clay County, she was born Feb. 9, 1929, to the late Caney C. Dockery and Hattie Miller Dockery. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Phylis Alene Giles; and two sons, Carl Sameul Owenby and Terry Edward Giles. Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Edward Ray Giles; two sons, Larry Owenby of Young Harris and Roger Giles of Gainesville, Ga.; two daughters, Vickie Buchanan of Dillsboro and Tammy Wiggins of Young Harris; two brothers, Virgil Dockery of Young Harris and Glen Dockery; four sisters, Verdie Anderson of Young Harris, Roxie Owenby of Blairsville, Ga., Opal Wooten of Duluth, Ga., and Valerie Rogers of Fostoria, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. Rani AldisIntherani Nayagam "Rani" Aldis, 59, of Mitchell Road, Sylva, died in Malawi, Africa, Friday, April 18, 2003, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at First United Methodist Church of Sylva. The Revs. Paul Christy and Terry Hammill, former minister, will officiate. Visitation will follow the service. At the time of her death, she was living in Malawi with her husband, William Aldis, M.D., World Health Organization representative to Malawi.
Bill TracyBill T. Tracy, 79, a long-time seasonal resident of Cullowhee's Caney Fork community, died May 31, 2003, in Pennsylvania.Following services in New York City, his body will be flown here for services at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at Balsam Grove Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, June 6, from 5-8 p.m. at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. He was born in Salem, Ark., on May 18, 1924, the middle child of James Otto Tracy and Pauline Robins Tracy. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and became the youngest chief petty officer in the service. He served on the USS Mississippi and the LST 1026. He saw action in various arenas of the Pacific, including the liberation of the Philippines. In 1945 he married Lazelle Wood of Caney Fork. They moved to New York City and began a long career in real estate. Having started at Western Carolina University, he completed his education at Columbia University, where he received a bachelor of science degree in architecture. They built a home on Piney Mountain in 1976 and also maintained residences in Manhattan and Pike County, Pa. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mickey Whitfield. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Lazelle Wood Tracy; one son, Billy Tracy Jr. of New York City; one daughter, Elizabeth Tracy Monge of Charlotte; one sister, Margie MacDonald of St. Augustine, Fla.; two grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Ring, 79, of Henry Road, Sylva, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at his residence.Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at St. Johns's Episcopal Church, of which he was a member. Father Henry Burton will officiate. A native of Harrisburg, Pa., he had lived in Jackson County for the past 14 years. He retired from Tampa Armature Works as small parts manager. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and son of the late Raymond G. and Emily Beshler Ring. Surviving are two sons, John Robert Ring of Sylva and Ross Douglas Ring of Midlothian, Va.; one sister, Ruth Fludovich of Clearwater, Fla.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Harry LominacHarry G. Lominac, 73, of Tuckasegee, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at his residence after an extended illness.No services are planned. A native of Buncombe County, he had lived in Jackson County since 1996. He was a retired professor, having served at several universities, including Kentucky State University. Son of the late Harry and Pauline Woodberry Lominac, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Mary "Billie" Ashe Lominac; one daughter, Tonya McCoy of Spring Hope; two sons, Tory Lee Lominac of Tuckasegee and Edward Ray Claybo of Charlotte; three sisters, Hilda Waller of Oklahoma, Polly Geary of Weaverville and Emily Finley of High Springs, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
